Qtel's New Optic Fiber Modem

Translator
By Translator

Qtel came today and installed the new modem which works on optic fiber.

It's a big device, so they will attach it to the wall, wherever your Qtel's junction box is located. It took them about 2 hrs to finish.

The wireless signal is a bit better than the old modem, but it is still weak.

When logged in the modem, this is how the interface looks like,

They tell me that the system will be activated in a month from now.

First of all, I want to know what are the Username and password of the fiber optic router. I tried with:

Username: admin

Password: admin

It did not work, I could not login. I tried many more pairs such as, root/admin, Administrator/connect2th and so on.

Wifi name is called SSID. Wifi password is called passkey or passcode. Once you login to the router, you navigate to the "WLAN" tab, you should see SSID and passkey (or passcode). Change them, save/apply and logout.

Do not forget to select encryption type i.e. WPA PSK or WPA2 TKIP.

WLAN may be "Wireless" or some other name depending the model and brand of the router.

Finally, unplug the power of the router, wait for a minute and replug it. You should be able to see the change.

I think they give the bandwidth of 1.5Mb/S (normal bandwidth) instead of 1Mb/S which was given to the old (copper wire) system. but I heard that user can subscribe up to 100MB/S bandwidth. the small box (cisco access point) can handle bandwidth of 300Mb/S as it was mentioned in the user manual.

I forgot to mention in the earlier comment the wight box is the IP TV console for the TV channels it comes with a remote control not like before you can record programs for watch later (scheduled or when watching) and you can rewind movies to watch from the beginning.

It is not recommended to connect to the configuration settings and do some changes if you really don't know what you doing.... user name and password are the default one which come from factory... it is both admin admin

Do it with your own risk

The Black big box is the fiber optical to ip modem, and it has the capability to spread wifi from itself but Q-Tel disables the wifi from that and give another access point which is cisco small black and blue box to get Lan and wifi connection.

I tried digging some setting in the big black box, you still can enable the wifi from that, it works and good speed, I still didn't figure out why Q-Tel has to give the second access point, may be because they want the big black box to be beside the junction box and pull connection to where user wants. If you still want to enable the wifi from the main big black box you can by going to configuration settings in the main big black box (modem)

I don't mean to hijack this threat, but thought others like me might want to know what we can expect for Internet speeds in Qatar (Doha)?

Most streaming site will work on 500kB but recommend 2 to 5 mB per. Was interested to know if that is possible in Doha and from whom.

Thanks in advance.

thanks for your reply.

I never used qtel's modem ( i had my own). The didn't setup the fiber modem yet. I will try your solution and see what happens.

can you check something for me. In the menu WAN of you fiber router can you setup a new connection. You should see a button 'new' on the upper right of your routers web page.

Have your setup worked fine before fiber? if so then nothing to change at all. The feed to your router (internet) was coming from the old Qtel modem, now get it from the new one. If it fails, make sure that "your" router does not use 192.168.100 as well, change the 192.168.100 on "your" router to 192.168.101 or whatever else you like

Translator.

Can I ask you how you manage to configure qtel fiber router to work in bridge mode in order to use your router for routing. I have similar installation.

Thanks

No razz77, it is black, and it is can't be placed as a set top box, it should be as close as possible to the junction box.

In my case, the junction box is on the other side of the wall behind my TV. So they drilled a hole to get a line through for the IP TV. I have my own complex network at home which requires using my own routers. So I added another LAN cable from the new modem to my own router.

One more thing, they connected a LAN cable from the new modem to my second floor. I am not sure if Qtel plans to add a second wireless access point upstairs.
