Iris Recognition System - Doha Airport
THE Interior Ministry has activated
the iris recognition system
at the Doha international airport
for the passengers entering Qatar as part of its continuous effort to employ the latest technology and applications to improve airport security.
Iris recognition is an automated method of biometric identification that uses mathematical pattern
recognition techniques on video images of the iris of an
individual’s eyes, whose complex random patterns are
unique and can be seen from some distance.
“Qatar is one of the first countries in the world to apply the iris recognition system,” said Director of Airport Security and Passport Department, Brig Naser
Ahmed al Maliki, noting that the ministry has a large electronic database of irises, which are unique to every person.

It's not to stop people getting in.... it's to stop them getting out.
It was in practice about a year and a half already. Although not all the time it's being used. It's usually at the immigration area both departure and arrival terminals.
