‘Revolutionaries left before the battle was over’

CAIRO: Egypt's revolutionaries can point to the moment their revolution began to go astray: it was the day of their greatest victory, when protesters ecstatic with the fall of president Hosni Mubarak cheered the army that stepped in to take his place. "The army and the people are one hand," they chanted.

In the nine months since, the ruling generals - all appointees of Mubarak and diehards of his rule - have kept an iron grip on a process that revolutionaries had hoped would mean the dismantling of the old regime in a transition to democracy.

The military has solidified its hold, giving itself overwhelming powers while governance of the country has faltered, leaving Egyptians worried about turmoil in the streets and a faltering economy. The youth groups that engineered the 18-day uprising against Mubarak have been squeezed out, marginalized and isolated.

"We should not have left the streets. We handed power to the military on a silver platter ," said Ahmed Imam, 33. "The revolutionaries went home too soon. We collected the spoils and left before the battle was over."

Now they are ruled by Hosni Mubarak's puppets like Tantawi who wants to keep power for themswlves.

Yet again we are discussing Egypt and once again the subject is bleak. So much for voting, freedom etc the unfortunate people of Egypt are once again in the news for all the tragic reasons as they were during the revolution. Inna Lillahi Wa inna Ilahi Rajioon... So depressing to see so many youngsters being killed by the dozens fighting for what now appears a never ending cause!

TANTAWI UNDER FIRE

"Come to Tahrir, tomorrow we will overthrow the field marshal!" youthful protesters chanted, referring to Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, the army commander.

Ahmad Gad, 20, a student, said: "The people feel that Hosni Mubarak is still ruling. In Tunisia they already had elections."

Holding a sign that read "Mubarak, leave", a 50-year-old English teacher named Mohammad Abdullah said: "He's still in power. He just moved his HQ from the palace to the hospital."

When the jasmin revolution started the publicity was done through virtual media and the public never had a good leader. They were able to remove Hosni Mubarak but they failed to throne a great leader to rule the country.
