Moving to Qatar, What do we need to know

Flyinchef
By Flyinchef

Hi All
I am sure this has been covered in a million and one places on the forum BUT.........

I have today secured a job in Doha and am planning to move my wife and 2 year old son out from the UK 2 months after I arrive.(once RP are set up etc)

My wife and I are planning a famil trip in the next couple of weeks for 3 nights.
What would you suggest we tackle first.
I read that waiting list are long for schools, does this apply to nurseries as well.
Which nurseries would you suggest visiting.
Should we hire a car or a driver (if driver any ideas of cost)

Thanks in advance

Greenie FTW!! Vacationing in Qatar (1st time) from California & not being able to bring organic anxiety medication posed a huge problem on day one for a particular person in our group – and still a smaller problem for the rest of us. I’ve never gotten weed from an online forum… seems super sketchy – but I thought I’d try anyways. I e-mailed Greenie ( haha420kush@gmail com ) and within less than ONE HOUR all of our problems were solved. Of course prices were affordable – BUT THE BUD WAS JUST AS GOOD!!! I’m telling you —- strait chronic. IN Qatar! Greenie e-mailed me back ASAP, had a great way of getting me what I needed and even threw in some roll papers and a blunt for good business! So what did I do?? – called him again. Went through the sack another 1 oz time (haha typical) and needed more, so Greenie pulled through yet again. AND WITH MORE ROLL PAPERS!!! Greenie feels like my neighborhood “guy” – trustworthy and professional. I think some posts here are from unreliable vendors trying to rip off people, cuz you can tell this guy isn’t trying to rip anyone off – he’s actually running a legit business. E-MAIL GREENIE ( haha420kush@gmail com ) IF YOU’RE DEBATING IT, cuz I DID & I WAS IRIE IN ONE HOUR!! XD

It all depends with the type of connection you will be using, wi-fi versus broadband, but i have no problems with neither. It is a bit slow but decent enough to mantain a video skype call

I read in your coments that the internet service is not the best, so I wonder if in Doha it is bad too. Can people in Doha make Skype videocall pc-pc for free? thanks

Hi dude,

To keep the wife and kids sane you need to watch English TV (live or use iplayer), 4OD, etc...

The good news is that you can do this with a VPN and the bad news is that you have got to pay for it (like all good things)

I use the one below, its about £8 a month but is the only decent one that doesn't keep dropping out or buffering all the time. Tried a few others and given up. Check it out. Good luck, you'll be glad you did.

I may be possibly going as well, so any useful information on what one would need to know would be helpful. I think that was the original question.

Thanks.

Latefa, it's not about what you can do. It's about what you can find. Try your luck. And if you are ready to go through all hassles or rejections, exceptions, meetings, appointments, if you are ok fight for sponsorship endlessly, go ahead, find a job here.

Wasta is helpful beneficial connections ;)

latefa, i am just telling you the truth. no one prevents you from trying..I simply prepare you for the obstacles which you most likely will face..

Trust me, I deal with the sponsorship issues on daily basis. If you got a high managerial position and fat salary, in the prestigous company, you might try your luck, being a woman to sponsor 3 dependants. Or if you got a wasta... otherwise..

latefa,

"a chance to move and start a new life"....You cannot just 'move and start'.. you have to find a job first.. Then I am not sure whether you will be allowed to sponsor 3 persons. It will depend on what type of job you will get, Company, your position and your salary. It is not a common practice to allow a female to sponsor her dependants, especially 3 of them.

BTW, how come "research associEte" cannot spell properly her own profession.. hhhmmm

Lol!!! Ok Gardene...I LIVED in Qatar for 2 years, left and came back 8 months ago...do I qualify?? You obviously have an axe to grind, though you're a dentist, I'm sure you're not exactly poverty stricken.

I have, and do deal with the day to day realities of doha....so it's not perfect and I get annoyed at a LOT of things on a daily basis....so what. The rest of the life I enjoy here. Flyinchef is 'probably' on a decent package and will therefore enjoy life here.

I know loads of people who have been here for 10 years and a lot longer! I'm also meeting more and more people who will be here till at least 2022. Maybe this is because I choose not to spend time with the negative people (to be blunt) who count the days while here. If you don't enjoy life in Doha....go home! You're probably here for the money...so be happy, live life and stop moaning to people looking to move here. Again...sorry to be blunt, but it's just more than a little boring.

@ Dohabrit2011,care to elaborate on "on & off since 2008"???...how long have you actually LIVED here? or does your job bring you here,on & off, where you don't have to deal with the everyday realities of this place beneath the facade???...excuse me for being blunt but you do sound a lot like either a) you haven't faced any of the realities on the ground here b) your tax-free package is SO ample that it more than makes up for the issues(if just the tax-free money & the lack of a life does it for you,it doesn't for a lot of people.) or c)both of the above!

@ flyingchef, let me ask you just one very simple question, you are being offered a package that is tax-free & i'm assuming very lucrative to you right? If this is "the place to be",EVERYONE would want to be here & they wouldn't have to offer the kind of high remunerations they currently do,now would they???...here's the deal, take the offer, come & sort yourself out, then bring your family, stay a couple of years by which time the facade will have worn away completely & you will see it for what it is & tire of it & even the money won't be worth it,but by then,if you manage your finances smartly, you'd have a tidy sum put away & you will probably move on elsewhere or back home, the story of this place, expats come, purely to save money, enjoy the tax-free benefits, get sick of it in a couple of years,("we've done our time" is the oft heard quote!) & leave...lather,rinse,repeat...the plus side here is the MONEY & the relative safety & low crime rates,so that works & is enough for a lot of people under the current global scenario...good luck...btw, try CESK,they are a reputed, well established British run kindergarten...good luck...

SCHOOLS - although your son is a bit young (mine is a little younger than yours - goes to nursery and I also have a nanny).

Go to the nurseries, check them out, driver is a good idea but bring your own car seat for your son, although renting a car for a few days will give you a taste for the 'driving styles' here...

Flyinchef, your post has been hijacked by a few idiots.

Shiva87 is spot on, speak to your HR, getting your education certificated done in advance is great advice.

There are some great nurseries, have a look at Starfish Lane....though really depends on where you job is. With that in mind, probably worth having look at a couple of properties with a budget in mind, unless that's being supplied.

Ignore the negativity some people throw at you and come with an open mind. Doha is a brilliant place, of course there are negatives, but the pro's outweigh these most of the time! It's a muslim country, and as long as you're respectful of that, life is good. Ignore the gay and prostitution comments....these people have obviously never spent time in any major city anywhere in the world....it's not even close to being a problem.

Get a driver! If you're only here for a few days, it's not worth renting. The roads and traffic aren't as bad as people say, especially if you've driven in London or another UK city....but you will get lost!

I've been here on and off since 2008, and it's the place to be at the moment. It's a safe place and great for families.

Good luck!

Pros

Cheap gas, No taxes, Nice work environment, Relaxed office hours, Ramadan timings, Good schools and colleges, Safe place, Good roads and basic infrastructure(except for internet services)

Cons

Its extremely hot, humid. People are narrow minded, low tolerance on small offences like weed/hash and even alcohol abuse, Cinemas are censored, Language barrier(its better now than before), prayer calls 5 times a day on loud speakers can be heard from anywhere in the country which is very annoying

It can take a while to adjust. Just dont do anything that is'nt "theologically pure" in public. Hope this helped

hey latefa,

Qatar is the perfect place for starting a new life.. its not the best luxurious place to be, but definetly the place to start a career, i advice u study ur moves, to be honest with you, moneywise Qatar is the place to be, coz we all leave our countries for better offers that we get in GCC and specially in Qatar.

but socialwise u need to be very well aware that its not the best place to be.. the best idea for fun, is going to swimming pools, nightsclubs and movies :P maybe malls as shopping .

im here with my wife for 2 years now, we're bored to death .. we do all major new activities, like Doha Tribeca Film Festival , owned by Robert de Niro, like many stuff that happens rarely though.

anyway i wish u luck, and i tell you to set up ur priorities.. many things for kids to have fun.. but not too many for us.

good luck again

The Arab culture is totally hypocritical, they will punish you for kissing your wife I public but will ignore blatant homosexual acts by Arabs and Phillipino men. They bring Chinese ladies to Qatar on the promise of work then turn them to prostitution because actually there is no work for them. These ladies pay up to QAR 60,000 for a 12 month visa!!! The place is corrupt!

Before you leave the UK, make sure you ask the HR team of your new company which certificates you'll need to attest. You'll definitely need to attest your educational certificates and Police Clearance Cert. from the UK itself as that cant be done from Qatar, and once you're here its an expensive process to send documents back to the UK.

Good luck :)

Hi, well I would definatly start with a driver, and then look for housing locations near to your place of work as traffic seems to be a major problem out here , then look at nurseries in very close proximaties, there are many nurseries here and some with waiting lists and others havnt, depends on where u are looking., do you have an area in mind?
