OK, so I've been told there is absolutely no way to obtain full insurance on a car that is 5+ years old. Is this actually true? Even if I was willing to pay more than average for the peace of mind, is it even possible?

On my old car, I had 10 years full insurance. only because I was the first owner and no accidents, I am sure they would not have renewed full insurance from the next year onwards, if I were in an accident.
I do not think, if you are a safe driver you will need full insurance, as, if you hit anyone, your insurance will pay for their damages and you pay for yours. If someone hits you, they pay for your damages.
I find having paid for the 10 years, I could have paid for my car twice over (or atleast a used car).
