Competitive salary package

Frodo
By Frodo

Dear all,

Just wanted to get an opinion from the learned Qlers (and please don't ask me go search for the answer coz no one has asked this specific question)

I am a British national, 35 years old, with an MBA and 9 years of Corporate Banking Experience. As a guide, do you think the following is a good salary package:

Salary: QAR 29,000 p.m (including housing)

Education allowance: QAR 2,667 p.m

Annual Return airfare + Private medical + Gratuity as per Qatari labour law

I am looking to get a 2-3 bedroom accomodation in a decent area (not the Pearl or West Bay).

Do you guys think it's a competitive package or am I being ripped off?

Many thanks for your help.

1- If you are planning to enroll your girls in a British school so be prepared to an extra of about 60,000 QAR per year for school fees.

2- The Banks are one the most proftable sectors in Qatar and they do offer much higher packages even for "Egyptians" for instance.

3- Definitley it's your decision based on comparing your current package with the offer.

Buttom line is; the question was, "Is this package competitive?"

The answer as per my knowledge is "NO"

Again if the question is; can you live with it?, the answer is "YES"

I really think it is worth your while to try to negotiate a better deal. I work for a university, and while I was very happy with my package, some of my colleagues pushed pretty hard for more money or better benefits. Brits are not good at this, but it's not unusual to counter offer here. Considering half your salary will go on accommodation, a large chunk in school fees and then there’s getting cars too. For a bank it’s probably a good deal but will it take care of all your needs and considerations. If I were you, I’d ask for more.

Hi Froda

I work for a university, and while I was very happy with my package, some of my colleagues pushed pretty hard for more money or better benefits. Brits are not good at this, but it's not unusual to counter offer here. Bearing in mind that half your salary will go on accomodation, and a qarter on education, that doesn't leave a lot for saving or for living. It is probably a fair offer for the banking sector, but does it provide for you and your family satisfactorily?

Many thanks to all who have answered, very useful info.

For those who asked, I shall be moving there with my family (wife and two girls). And no I am not a big spender (though not stingy as well) and I am a teetotal.

I understand that salaries can vary by Nationality / Experience and Education but another important thing is the sector in which you are working as well?

I won't be working for the Q companies and I am not related to the Hydrocarbons (Petroleum / Gas) sector. I would be working for a local bank as a manager.

Does that change anything in terms of your answers?

Looking forward to your comments.

You can judge yourself by comparing your current package in the UK (if you are working there). Considering the job market in Europe and US, if you are offered a position with even similar or more package, then I think it is very good.

If the question is can you live with it so the answer is definitely YES>

The point is the package doesn't mach with the qualification (and the nationality). And more important will not leave enough extra for saving which I think is the main reason for coming here (at least this is the case for me.

And Selani your sarcastic comments are disingenuous and unhelpful, and do nothing to enhance your profile or to promote the image of living in Qatar to those who haven't yet been here. This person has a genuine and reasonable concern and doesn't deserve such spitefulness.

An extremely critical item of the package is education assisstance. This amount can hardly afford one child.

I very much go with Selani on this. No offense, but it is a fact that westerns and specifically British are over paid for being so.

In my opinion this package is reduculious.

Good luck with your move to Qatar, I recently relocated here with my husband and there is much to recommend it. As to your salary package, I don't think you are being ripped off at all, but also, its not the most fab in the world considering it includes your housing. You dont state if you are coming alone or with a family but a three bed property is going to cost you more than QR10,000, most likley it will be around 14 -18K - even out of town. If you are alone and going to get a one bedroom place, you could find something nice for around 9/10K per month. Cars are not cheap to rent or buy here, and eating out in the good restaurants costs around 800QR for two, so you get an idea. Being tax free helps as well, and the working hours are probably less than in the UK, and the commute to work will be easy too. All things you are likly to want to take into consideration. I hope this helps, and if I were you, with your experience and qualifications, I would push for more money or a housing allowance. And Selani, your sarcastic comments are disingenuous and helpful. Spiteful comments like that do nothing to enhance your profile or to promote the country to those who have not been here. This person had a reasonable and genuine concern and didn't deserve such unpleasantness from you.

Hi it is fair enough and I am in a good area (not West bay) where a 2 bedroomed apartment with pool, gym etc are included for 8000/month. Look at Al Asmakh properties, look at lots of apartments just outside the city, then make a choice.

How dare they offer such a puney package to a subject of mighty British Empire. This is less than one-third of what your passport color is worth. Qualification and experience? frankly that doesnt matter.

Hey

it depend on you, how much you expense,

but definitly you can find very nice appartment with QR 8000, but sametime you can get villa with QR 10000, and you can get car in install by bank, and sametime you can save if your expense not that much, cuz 29000 is very good payment

if you have any other things , that will be something else

GOOD Luck
