Mobile phone use taking toll on roads: top official
Traffic Department officials during a discussion at the Police Training Institute
Using a mobile phone while driving was one of the main causes of accidents on Qatari roads, a top official of the Traffic Department has said. Brigadier Mohammed Saad al-Kharji, director of the Traffic Department, was speaking at a discussion held at the Police Training Institute (PTI) headquarters on traffic issues on Sunday. Also speaking at the discussion, PTI director Colonel Dr. Mohammed Mahanna al-Murri said that traffic accidents were mostly caused by speeding, not fastening seatbelts and using mobile phone, leading to great losses, including loss of lives and economic loss for public and private sectors. Brigadier al-Kharji said that the Traffic Department was planning to install advanced radar systems to record accidents and to book reckless drivers. The Traffic Department director said that the department is working towards reduction of accidents as it monitors various roads at various times and implements awareness programmes in association with the public relations department at the Ministry of Interior. He advised the youth not to drive recklessly as it would expose themselves and others to risks. “The Traffic Department is concentrating on reduction of accidents through wide awareness campaign and numbers show that it has improved the situation,” said Brigadier al-Kharji. In the open discussion, al-Kharji said that red signals can be crossed only to make way for ambulances and official convoys, and in cases where the police ask you to do so. He also said that no one is above the rules and the traffic law is implemented for everyone. Regarding the use of window tinting, the director said that it can be fixed only for those with a medical report saying that he or she cannot be exposed to sunlight due to some disease. “For that, permits shall be obtained,” he added. He said that slow driving, specially on two-lane roads, block the flow of traffic and warned that those drivers will be booked instantly for traffic violation. The director also cautioned against stopping on yellow boxes at intersections.
Yesterday, as I was crossing the Al Mana mall carpark, this guy in a small black car was driving from my right, looking like he was going straight (ie across my path but quite a bit away from me). I did not think much of it as he was no where near me at the time but then he suddenly swerved towards me, without indicating (and going very fast), he missed me by a couple of cm. He looking more shocked than I was and you guessed it, he was on the phone. If I had been that bit closer to him,he would have run into me, may have been serious may not have been but that was more by luck than good judgement on his part. I hope he reads this article.
Just busy during Ramadan since we have only 5 hours of work plus the fasting makes one drowsy and slow.. I don't get much time to surf Qatar Living these days.. Plus I am going away on vacation next week.. See you guys after Eid.
Hilarious - totally out of touch and unwilling to take the firm measures neessary to protect the majority on the roads - this is as transparent as David Cameron's "We're gonna get hard on gangs and impose a zero tolerance policy" sound bite, sound bite, sound bite - spin, spin, spin. Until the authorities start making examples of perpertrators of crime on the roads then the authorities are "P*ssing in the wind" and they can hold as many Press Conferences as they want, bang as many tables as they want - truth is, NOBODY is listening!!!!!
This could have been expanded their statement to include the word "Qatari" for example at the appropriate point

Is this some kind of joke!? If they open their eyes and did their 'job' properly then every other driver would be caught for being on a mobile,no seat belt, too much tint, reckless driving.....then the roads might be a little less dangerous! can't see it happening in my lifetime!!!!!!!! Oh..I don't have any tint either, thank goodness I'm not allergic to the sun!

"He also said that no one is above the rules and the traffic law is implemented for everyone." Now ambulances okay.. but official convoys are also called no one?
"Regarding the use of window tinting, the director said that it can be fixed only for those with a medical report saying that he or she cannot be exposed to sunlight due to some disease."There are lots of sick people in the streets!!
raffic accidents were mostly caused by [...] not fastening seatbelts ..strange statement...maybe because some people drive with their feet on the driver side mirror..hard to do that if you are using the seatbelt

99 percent of the locals I work with have tinted windows in their cars.. What does it say about them?

Actually, rabbooba, I expect some "sick" people defending their car tinting here!
LP..seems I am in a better health condition than I thought..judging from the fact that I am one of the non tinting minority ..!

Please put that into "Funnies"!"He also said that no one is above the rules and the traffic law is implemented for everyone."Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!
