The government recognised the spectacle as "an artistic discipline and cultural product".
The move follows pressure from bullfighting organisations keen to protect their livelihood following a controversial vote to ban bullfighting in the Catalonia region last year.

Bulls are not raised for meat - nobody; if they are well fed eats 'bull meat'. Bulls are reared to rear. Bullfighting in Spain is a macho male thing against a bull it is the 'ultimate male fight' - look at folk law. It is tradition - blah, blah, blah! No need for it anymore at all. It is cruel and I am always, sadly happy when the Matador is injured. This makes me an awful person I know.
Why don't they leave the bulls alone and let them do the things they are best at...
AS sports go this one is pretty rubbish. The bull who has been reared on the finest pasture and allowed to grow strong and fit as nature intended, running wild ,is distressed beyond reason of its understanding by being pulled off his pasture and herded, coralled, subjected to human contact like it has never known( because these animals must be as wild as possible).Next it is tossed into a ring with maybe acrobats, pierced with men on horses with spears,,,,further weakened by having several little javelins rammed into hos back,,,,,exhausted by now through excessive phsical and mental distress,,,never mind the blood loss from the little spears he has jammed into his back,,,is then taunted with a man in tight trousers and a silly hat,,,,,well its just not sport or art ,,,is it.I cannot in any way see this for other than what it is ,,,,VILE.
azamat, there is a difference between killing an animal for food and killing an animal for fun and enjoying seeing the animal's pain and suffering. And when it comes to bullfighting, prolonging this pain and suffering "artistically".The same goes for dog and cock (noooooooooo, the animal!!) fighting. Not to forget hunting for the pleasure of killing an animal in general.
Most people commenting here have never ever watched a bull fight sitting in an arena. It's a deeply cultural thing for Spain. I vote for maintaining this beautiful tradition. So what if a bull is killed at the end? When you sit your hypocritical fat a$$ at Applebees and order their steak of the day, just remember, an innocent cow was killed for your greed :)PS: I love a juicy steak.
If an animal is killed for other reasons than neccessity, it is cruelty and should be banned. And finding pleasure in seeing an animal fighting to survive, going cazy with fright and pain,in this case mostly without success, is beyond my understanding.
It is an interesting topic one of which I studied at school along with the pro cons of fox hunting back in the uk and with bull fighting the bulls are bred for this purely nothing else, the matador is trained usually from childhood and to play with the bull and excute it painlessly and in most case is a father to son tradition (within this circle ) also people say it's cruel and barbaric, yet walk around with leather shoes on their feet, frozen meats in there freezer, and never think about the conditions of those animals, if it was banned these bulls would become surplus to requirement, the numbers would dwindle, then a new campaign would commence'save the bull'
I was under the impression that they were endangered, but now I see they are only "vulnerable." It doesn't really make a difference, the point is there aren't enough of them to replace the bulls in bullfighting.
you just say they are endangered!... what the...
you just say they are endangered!... what the...
Khokhoy, they aren't endangered (with the exception of Asiatic) but they are vulnerable. And I'm pretty sure there are far less of them than there are cows.

Lions are NOT endangered after all
Yes I do.
my friend Colt watched a bullfighting game!It was you who mentioned that those who watch (and I would say support such thing) as stupid, right? So you think the government of Spain is stupid because they are trying to save this game?
He put a sad face after his admission of going. Which means he didn't enjoy it.
Flor you strike me as the kind of person who would get a kick out of crack baby basketball.
you read his comment above? So what do you think of our friend?
I think anyone who finds an animal dying amusing is stupid and emotionless yes, and I don't read anyone from QL saying they saw it.
the bull here dies FIGHTING. Unlike in the butchery , instant death!
that you find most Spaniards, stupid and emotionless? And tourist who watched this game also stupid. I think a fellow Qler just admitted watching this game in above comment!
No. I consider it the brutal killing of an animal for the amusement of stupid, emotionless people. I consider basketball, baseball, etc. to be sports.
Please name a sport that involves a player that is incapable of agreeing to play that sport, and who 9 times out of 10 is brutally killed during that sport Flor.
you don't consider bullfighting a sports?
there are other sports that entails same risks!
Sport is generally a fair contest, and to be fair, the bull needs to win once in a while
The meat of the bull is sold at a premium in the markets... they are going to be killed anyways for their meat.If they are not killed with a single strike, then it's suffering for them. But the day I went for the bullfight in Madrid, very few were killed with a single strike :-(
Where in the world aren't lions endangered?
No, dont ban it.
Replace bulls with lions (they are not endangered); Replace swords with shorter knives. Now, thats what you can call an art.

And how about this?
Rodeos is far way better than seeing people participate to something so risky for their lives which may cause death..and people say it's an art of discipline and a cultural product? Disciplining of bulls they mean?
And that too after much hardship..how sadistic can one be to watch it all in the name of "cultural product"?
I find Rodeos rather strange also, but the key difference here is that the Bull is killed..
How anyone can find enjoyment in such an obviously barbaric sport is beyond me!
Nishantvshah - to make it easy for u:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bullfighting
they want to play.. let them enjoy.. :)
Nishantvshah, I suggest you google what bullfighting is. Nobody sits on a bull.
may be they can use robots to sit on the bulls, the same way arabs now use robots during camel races.
It should be banned, where are the animal rights organizations?
I can't imagine how these people still wanna be in bullfighting when they can actually see death in every event.. That's so brave of them to still have the guts to participate..
It's barbaric and should be banned.
I've seen this a lot of times and there's always death in almost every event. I think this should be banned, if bulls are really that important part of their culture they could arrange another event which is safer..like a bull parade..etc.
what ?....Red Bull is going to be outlawed ? :( Noooooo
