Moving to Doha

Hey :)

I am moving to Doha in September to start a graduate job, this website is really good for finding out a but more about what it will be like!

It would be great if anyone could share their experiences of living in Doha in terms of social life etc?

Are there many beaches that are open to the public to use? Is it acceptable to just go out to a bar and have a drink with friends? Is the city pretty compact, do people tend to walk places or get taxis? Is it easy to meet other people...?

Lots of questions :) if anyone has anything to share it would be great!

Where is the sense of adventure? Why do todays expats wants everything laid out to them even before they arrive? And when they do, why do they stick within the confines of their imaginary boundaries (both physical and mental)? Just come, explore, find out things first hand.

i have been living in qatar for 11 years...and i found is perfect palce to stability

its safe place....you can drive your car here....and there is alot of places to see such as souq waqif its an old traditional market have been renovated..Also ther is katara...nice and quiet place including some coffee shops...and yes..you can find shopping mall (villagio, city center, land mark) these malls including brand name

for beach...there is katara beach but should to pay 100QR for every time...and also you can go to sealine beach resort...south of doha...dukhan north-west of doha..al-ghariya..North of doha

You can go with your friends to have drink in some night club..But Usually night clubs here in 5 stars hotels..like W,marriott ,intercontinental ,Ramada and lacigale..And you should have a membership ID for each night club you will pay between 100-150 QR to get this membership...but you should avoid being drunk in public

For dress...you can wear jeans and T-shirt or anything you like..But avoid to wear something like miniskirt or similar..Unless if you’re with your friends in some night club...but in your jobs or in malls you can't

Food..Here is in qatar variety of Options...you can find fast food (McDonald's, KFC, BK, etc.)Also you can find European restaurant, Asian, Indian, Persian, Turkish and of course a lot of Arabic restaurant..And it’s your chance to try some of Arabic cuisine.

and don’t worry you can make friends from all nationalities..qatar is nice place to stay in

There are beaches that are open to the public - however this is a Muslim conservative country so one has to respect that. This means dress respectfully - no outward displays of affection in public - don't be rude to anybody and never appear drunk in public. Most people drive - there are Karwa buses and Karwa taxis and these are not that great. If you cannot afford a car get Fox Taxis. There are fantastic bars and restaurants over here - you are young so perhaps you may want to get involved in the Rugby Club crowd.Qatar is clean and safe - traffic is a nightmare and so is some of the driving. However - you do get used to it - it is not the worst in the region for driving.Once you make friends and establish a social life - Qatar is great.Come and enjoy.
