Bahrain GP 2011? Yes, No, Yes, NO...
Initially was yes, then no, later yes and now no!
Do you agree with a YES or with a NO? And why so?
Personally, I think it should be a NO, until all Bahraini citizens are treated equally and have the same rights and opportunities.
A democratic elected government would be a plus, if it's not asking for too much!
Then, then can organize all sorts of International Events with no fear or need to hide anything or anybody (particularly doctors) in their jails!
follow up the story, here: http://www.arabianbusiness.com/-of-course-it-s-not-on-says-bernie-on-bah...
LincolnPirate,
I agree with you.
Check the Bahraini frivolous way in dealing with such a serious matter:
"Bahrain F1 authorities have indicated they are ready to hold the race.
“If it was up to us, we are ready," Zayed Rashed Al Zayani, chairman of the Bahrain International Circuit, said earlier this month.
"We are happy to have it. We are ready to host it. But unfortunately it is not our decision alone. There are many factors involved. We are hoping for the best and would like to have the race back.”
(...)
The main opposition group Wefaq said bringing back Formula One would help the country politically and economically.
"We at Wefaq support hosting the event. It will force all the stakeholders to come together to find solutions ahead of the event. It would bring indirect pressure on all parties; people could be released from jail in advance," said Jasim Husain, a senior figure at the Shi'ite group.

Yeah brit, I'm a believer. But you know how they are.
Do you really believe that the F1 teams are refusing to go to Bahrain because of the crackdown ?
There should be a ban on organizing and participating, Nic.
Brit,
you mean banning from organizing it, right?
i thought they already do that.
Yes, brit. And there have been boycotts of the Olympic games throughout history. If the FIFA is a French (European) creation, then they should accept members only if they comply with the values of Europe. And that means: Human Rights as per the UN convention, no Death Penalty, no Martial Law, etc.
The truth behind all this that the Crown Prince of Bahrain's visit to the White House did not go very well..:)
Then we should also ban such countries from the Olympics and other tornamnets till they come into line.

sports are politics as it has the power to influence!
So, are we now saying that Politics and Sport should mix ?
frenchieman,
There is a slight difference here.
Refer to Ummjake comment above, and on top of all those human right violations, they are using the F1 to fake a national reconciliation.
On top of that they are hiring masses of foreigners of a certain religious sect, to become police and soldiers where 70% of the Shia population is not allowed to apply for those posts.
Something is terribly wrong there, more than in any other place in the MENA, as it’s hidden and camouflaged!
Money redefines Democracy and human Rights.
spot on ummjake.
group..
F1 is LP's religion and should not be discussed on main forum ;)
Reduced atmosphere and less gravity would make that a sight to see.
frenchie
following Nic's criteria, F1 has no place on this earth, it must be carried out on Mars.
Nic--your criteria would keep formula one out of the GCC and most of Asia.
..though I won't hold my breath. Chances are another 'new' decision will come about in another week or so.
But while people are still imprisoned and tortured there, and doctors and nurses are being tried for simply treating patients during the uprising, Bahrain should not get 'rewarded' by hosting F1.
The message they're trying to present to the world, that everything is A-okay there now, is complete BS. When they stop oppressing 70% of their population, maybe then they can join the ranks of countries given the privilege of hosting world-class international sporting events.
Until then, they should be denied the opportunity, no matter how much money they throw on the table as an enticement.
Peer saib, i'm doing well, lets not turn it to a chit chat group ;)
the SMS group alert man :)
Alter Dustey ..how you doing??
F1 is not better that FIFA..one man being holding the position for long and he got nuts!!
Should be NO from the begining citing the situation in Bahrain..
Alter, you know when things will turn ;)
MBK, you are not part of that group ;)
You know very well who they are ;)
s_isale
hold on, the topic is not upto the taste of sms group.
s_isale, SMS crowd.. Please excuse my ignorance, but what does that mean? care to expand that for my benefit..:)
well the SMS crowd is back...
Alter Dusty,
In that case, its all good ;)
not a conspiracy theory, but soon a western architect firm will be paid for the new design, a west base consulting company will get the contract, a west base contracting company will start building another landmark with asian workers.
PS: The topic has been posted, discussed a day before by LP, one must be familiar with search button when it comes to post any crap on QL.
@s_isale....tell Bernie Eccelstone that, hes a billionare out of F1, I'm sure he will disagree with you
"Members of the opposition expressed their disappointment at the demolition of a structure the government itself had described as one of the kingdom's "most striking landmarks."
http://edition.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/meast/03/18/bahrain.protests/?hpt=T2
The Pearl Monument was demolished early on 18 March. The move was read as destroying an important symbol and focal point of the protest movement.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Bahraini_uprising
anyway F1 is a big waste of money.
a big FAT NO, in fact take it away from them...
I think the latest no is something to do woth India holding that race..:)
baldrick2dogs,
the fact that it took place when it did, may lead to other conclusions.
It was already earmarked for demolition later this year as the old roundabout is being redeveloped
In that case we can discuss here:
Why the government of Bahrain destroyed the Pearl Monument, an iconic landmark of Bahrain?
lol, I did search it but because of the subjective post titles it didn't show up!
this thread need to be locked then.
Seems you're in weekend mode alread ;O)
