earthquake experts charged - manslaughter

Seven experts responsible for evaluating the threat of natural disasters in Italy have been charged with manslaughter for allegedly failing to give sufficient warning about the devastating L'Aquila earthquake in 2009.

Judge Giuseppe Romano Gargarella ordered the members of the Great Risks commission to go on trial in L'Aquila on 20 September.

The judge said the defendants "gave inexact, incomplete and contradictory information" about whether smaller tremors in L'Aquila six months before the 6.3 magnitude quake on 6 April, which killed more than 300 people, should have been viewed as warning signs of the subsequent disaster.

Delusional at best.

italy is prone to earthquakes. instead of investing in earthquake-proof infrastructure and houses, they throw accusations all around to hide their corruption. 308 killed? in a 6.3 magnitude? in a mostly 2 stored building village? for me, the urban designors and civil engineers should be hanging on the posts. not the seismologists.

Excellent move. Perhaps the same threat should be made to weathermen.

if it was just the movement of tectonic plates that causes earthquakes, then wouldnt the scientists be in a position to predict the same?

What a shame for those poor scientists. :( Hopefully they get off.

I remember the 2005 Asian Earth Quake, While I was in Balakot the epicenter of the Earth Quake, The general myth of people was that God punished them because Homo sexuality was in the increase and people were becoming too modern in that Area? Errr

judge seems to be living in a make believe world :)

Thats ridiculous... If experts could predict natural disasters..many lives would have been saved all over the world. In many places they had mild earthquakes before which were not the sign of any big quake which happened later.
