Real men of Honor

magis65
By magis65

I work in night shift. Every night while driving back home, at around 2.30am - 3.30 am, I see workers of Doha Municipality cleaning the roads, watering the plants and flowers on the Road dividers on Corniche road as well as other roads.
These people work in late night to help us keep the city clean. The city looks beautiful and colorful because of such men who work when all of us fall asleep. I know we all contribute to the cleanliness of the city. But these are the men actually on the field.
I'm posting this forum just to thank them from the Bottom of my heart. If any authority reading this, please pass our regards to those men, who deserve to be thanked.
If there exists any Thanksgiving Day, I would like to thank all these workers who keep the city clean and tidy.

Agree with you all.

Its difficult to support them.

Indirect means can be in terms of Money, some good food or packed items like pack of Biscuits, bottled water/juice or a tin of soft drink.

If someone wants to do better - can make a small insurance for them (will not cost much).

These are all unsung heroes.

By anonymous• 5 May 2011 14:19
anonymous

Just a note guys, those guys gets a salary nothing higher than Qrs.750 per month and that's definitely to support a whole family.

so if you really wanna salute them, won't help them much, specially that you're doing it here on Qatarliving...

I would suggest that you pass by anyone you see, thank them for the great work they're doing, and help them with whatever you can...a small amount of money will bring a huge smile to their face, and if we all do this, it will be a big amount end of the day...

So this hard working person will get back home, tired and happy, and before he sleeps he will thank God for his great job, cause it's supporting his family , and the next day he would wanna be everywhere to work and to make an extra cash ....

I believe this is how we all can help them to keep their hard work, and as well the good smile on their faces...

that's my 2cents!!

I use to tip those workers very often, Most of streets they are cleaning are dangerous, specially the intersections, while exposed to the mad and errant traffic of the nigh.

By frenchieman• 2 May 2011 19:47

ubi007--Yes. Qatar is being developed by the West, for which its citizens are paid a generous user fee.

By anonymous• 2 May 2011 15:18
anonymous

Alright, agreed but you mentioned earlier that it was thanks to us that these people had a job as if we were 'qatari' taxpayers. Also, let's remember that the whole purpose of the service is to keep the city and its facilities clean, in a health state but it's also our job to help them out by not littering. Then again, is this thanks to us? I am not so sure about that! :)

They may not be heroes for me, but I do believe in positive reinforcement and the power of praising people, please send my best regards to your husband for always practicing it.

By nomerci• 2 May 2011 14:05
nomerci

ok Mike...no, I am not taking this personal.

I just do not understand why people doing a job are heroes.

Sure, you can call them that...and thank them for doing the job they are paid to do, might be a nice gesture. My husband thanks me every day for cooking his dinner, nice thing to do, I agree. am i a hero? Hmmmm.....I slave in a hot kitchen, prepare and serve food, clean up my family's mess afterwards...and , now here it comes..I do this WITHOUT being paid wages...dear lord...I am a slave!!!! ;)

Now, don't get me wrong, I respect everybody who does their job...if it is done in unfavourable circumstances, I do feel sorry for those people. No doubt.

But we all are , at some point or another, in unfavourable circumstances, this is life.....that does not make us better, or heroes, in my eyes.

About littering, I think in a post of mine above i made my stand on that very clear. Nobody , and I strongly repeat, nobody in my family litters. Ever. We do make an effort, considerable at times as trash cans are scarcely available here, to put our garbage where it belongs.

When we go out we do not leave a table we have used like a battlefield,we do not clean it all ourselves, as this is the job of other people (at least in this country), but we leave it in an easy to clean up state.

We are not arrogant and /or abusive. Respect is what it is all about, not hero worship.IMHO.

It's early, but I am already feeling a little sarcastic.

Off to do my bit for the world economy by pointing out to my gardener why it was wrong of him to day the day off just because he was feeling ill. I actually almost had to water my own flower pots, but fortunately found a poor looking Asian passing by and demanded she immediately did it for me so that I could get back to posting on QL.

By anonymous• 2 May 2011 07:33

LOL,...Frenchie,.... I like the humor and abhor the snobbery in your post On the whole I am dismissing it as a joke,.....

By frenchieman• 2 May 2011 05:46
frenchieman

My inability to iron my own shirts, my wife's disdain for cleaning toilets, my hatred of caring for a garden in the desert, our combined discomfort of driving in what is a third-world traffic system, etc. is cumulatively keeping several small villages around the world going.

They day the well-to-do start cleaning up their own rubbish is they day these people return to their home countries to live in abject poverty, living in unhealthy squalor, turning to crime, and relying on charity and welfare. When the system crumbles, civil war breaks out and with it mass murder. Then the West is called in to restore peace and rebuild the infrastructure. Better just to pay them a labourer's wage now.

So think of littering as a charitable donation to poor people around the world and an investment in future world peace.

By anonymous• 1 May 2011 23:15
anonymous

nomerci, I really don't know but if I may ask, are you taking this as personal? The fact that there is a cleaner waiting around, does not necessarily give you the right to throw your stuff on the floor. The law forbids it, too bad is not being enforced.

I think we are having a misconception about the real sense of "cleaning" and I think we are talking about public health more than anything. There are countries where they have a far more advanced sanitary system and still, you could get fined for littering around and trust me, this is serious business, not just nickels and dimes.

Servile and serviceable are two different words with diametrically different concepts. I respect these workers for tolerating sub-human conditions and for still being SERVICEABLE. I would not let anyone kiss my butt even when they don't know any better.

I have witnessed people drinking coffee or tea in their high-end cars, and throwing their cups or spitting on the floor in front of the employees even if they are just three steps away from the trash bin.

Sorry nomerci, I strongly disagree with you: we are not giving them a job by doing this... on the contrary, we show a great deal of arrogance.

And yes, you may call them "my" heroes and to be frank, I could not care less... I have enough dignity to realize who the good people are regardless of their education, nationality, race or financial income.

Non merci, je respecte votre opinion, mais je suis d'accord avec vous

By nomerci• 1 May 2011 17:34
nomerci

Well Mike, if those "idiots" as you call them didn't, your heroes wouldn't have a job.

And there are many underpaid workers in this place.

I hope you value them as much as you value these workers.

By anonymous• 1 May 2011 12:10
anonymous

Muhammad Saleem: I salute your opinion.

I don't see many people thanking them for their service, or even acknowledging their presence.

Kindness should be equal to all, that's the true essence of being 'human'

By anonymous• 1 May 2011 12:08
anonymous

nomerci: given the salary, living conditions, weather and ignogance of some idiots from many nationalities throwing their scheit all over I think they should be treated as TRUE HEROES! :)

* ignogance: ignorance with arrogance

every worker should be appreciated, not just them, they are doing there job and getting paid, its not a charity work to make from them huge "Ghandis" .. every person have to complete his or her job and be appreciate it, dont look at any job more important than the other, they are all the same.. so just thank them all and dont think they are doing that because they're TOO NICE.. again it's there JOB which they are getting paid to do..

u should have said this:

THANKS TO ALL WORKERS OUT THERE, ALL OF THEM.

REGARDS :)

There is no second opinion that evry one gets paid for what service one provides to the employer. But one question still remins there.."Whether this sanitary or cleaning staff or people from similar low paid professions get the same RESPECT which a doctor,an engineer,a professor or any similar professional will get from the society.

But they are doing the job they are paid to do.

Similar to Doctors, Nurses, Chefs, Waiters, cleaners, maids etc that work through the night.

I am here as a White Western Woman that is supposed to be precious and protected and sometimes I am still here at 3am doing work, yes I skive and come on QL but I still work longer hours here then back home.

I think that most people over here in their jobs work long hard hours...these men are EMPLOYED AND PAID to work the night shift. They applied for the job, they got the job, they are paid for the job - they do the job.

Fair play to them - but we all do that at different levels. xxoxoxox

While I appreciate the Cleaners and Gardeners for their services I do not find anything exceptional in their duty timing or it’s nature. They work in shifts as do many other professionals and get paid for their jobs and not doing any personal voluntary service.

you should ask them the basic salary and the working hours!tottally absurd. If they were paid a milli for cleaning they would very much appreciate your effort in littering everywhere. They fall on the least paid category and lets all make it easier for them.

Next time just toss any garbage you have in your car to them as you drive past, because this is a sure sign that you respect their profession as trash collectors and know that they will know how to handle it. That's what I do when I see rubbish collectors on the street, and judging by the amount of stuff that is ejected from Land Cruisers, locals share my appreciation for these men.

There are many people in various other professions whom we can relate to on the same emotional footing... if I go out thanking all of them, my whole life would be spent in thanking them itself... end of the day everyone has a job to do and gets paid for it ... whats so emotional/ special about it.
