rent a car tricks

i will tell it straight as straight is. Most rent a car businesses are full of dirty tricks.Last month i wanted a car for one week and it was a bit urgent,i dropped to one of the rent a car shops around matar,It was night time so the owner capitalised on this and told me to check the car and sign that its in gud condition. Obviously not every one is a mechanic and my checking only included the outer body and a peep on the seats. All was well. Then i thot wht the hell lemme just go ahead and put my signature and veer off coz like i told u before i was in a hurry.
on returning the car back, the guy went straight to front of the car,u know where the plate number is?look down further! i knew it wasnt gud news as he started shaking his head and got furious. He informed me tht there are some scratches and i had hit the car on a pavement. My checking obviously ddnt include going down there,if that was the case i wld have come with a camera and record everything,u know the before and after pics they take for muscle enhancement adverts? i would have pulled one of those.
To cut the short story short i was forced to pay for dents i didnt even make. I got mad, threatened to call police but all the guy could say is you signed it yourself. I paid them but again i feel short changed and conned. So friends beware of the tricks this ppl pull to earn tht extra buck, next tym they might go for the kill and inform you there is somthng wrong wt the engine when you return the car!!

Go with reputed co's (budget, avis, national etc) when you do not know the market and do not have trustworthy guys through your contacts. When i came here in 2006 the shocking part was to have my passport as guarantee for car rental by these smaller rental car co's!!! They kept all the passports in a desk drawer!!! No ways am i gonna let go of my passport in the gulf for a rental car!!

Although tht said that trustworthy guy came to me with a fine after a 8 months :-) The fine receipt said "overloading of car" but thanks to QL, i knew it was a speeding fine and the date was during the time i rented the car. All's well that ends well

Such problems exist everywhere. Atleast, it happens from where I've come.

When I went to rent a car centre couple of months back, that guy asked me if I'm an American. I said, No I'm a Pakistani. He said...Okie then, you'll have to deposit your original passport with us. What to do...Yaa'ni? :P

PS: No need to grab your bebsi & bobcorn. No Sh!t Stirring intended ;)

just be careful before signing the check up list, even that carefulness cant be extended to engine parts coz lets be honest here how many tyms u have hired a car and first took it to a service dealer for a thorough check up? chances are nil

what if u are returning the car and the shop owner tells you that u jammed some engine part and the car is not at the state u took it. Wht wld u do even if u have a video evidence tht the car was dentless on the outside?

I thnk the only virtue tht enables this not to happen is TRUST,and when the dealer wants to screw u up-HE WILL.

I had this kind of problem recently but not in Qatar in my homeland, I believe this kind of issue is common at everywhere, I had to pay about 500 riyals for it,

we make this mistake mostly when we were in hurry & careless but if they really want to pinpoint they can bcoz you cannot memorise every single part of the car,

Nowadays mobile phone has a good capability of video recording so my suggestion is take a clear video recording around the vehicle & verify those previous sign/marks before you sign, preferrably you can make a note in agreement that you have taken a video recording on so & so date.
