Obama's off the record remarks on Qatar

During the day Thursday, President Obama met with the emir of Qatar, praising his help in Libya and his leadership "when it comes to democracy in the Middle East."

That night, Obama provided political donors in Chicago with a somewhat different view of the emir and Qatar.

Having banished the press pool from a q-and-a session with the donors, Obama did not realize he was still speaking on an open mike. Mark Knoller of CBS News recorded his comments . . .

I think that it shows they are fierce defenders of their countries but that the rivalry for the WC was ultimately a friendly one and their way of burying any sour grapes with a bit of a laugh. Obama was joking beforehand that he hoped for good tickets, even though he won't be president in 2022.

1. Well, to post a Pics or ADs on the R/Abouts its a bad ideas for Qatar drivers. They get distracted and dont know how to pass a R/B properly anyway

2. Emirs last words to Obama were: "And I wont forget to send your tickets for the 2022 (laughter)"...I think it was the answer to Obamas: "Qatar didnt deserve 2022" :D

The publicity photos some of the candidates chose are quite amusing. With time I am sure they will be hiring outside consultants and the elections will be a bit more glamorous, but for now it is fun to see them.

Qatar will hold soon consultative council elections.

The constitution provides for legislative power to be vested in a Shura (consultative) Council made up of 45 members, two thirds of whom would be elected and the rest appointed by the emir.

The Shura Council is currently named by the emir.

polkadots--I agree. I think it shows Obama is paying attention, and while I don't agree with a number of his policies, I take some comfort in that. Bush's comments when he though the microphone was turned off usually alarmed me.

True Uranus, It all points to the fact that though people have a rigid stereotype set about every body else we really should look beyond the obvious, credit should be given to Obama to come up with a close realistic profile of the HH of Qatar than a standard version of Thoub wearing, camel sporting Bedouin,..... much held in the West,..... HH The Emir is a cut above the rest of the ME royals and one need to understand him individually before a comment like the one Obama said can be made.

Cabbage--follow the links and read the whole story! It explains that a reporter was at the private fundraising dinner and made a note of the remarks. The story was in USA Today.

No, he did not say anything bad about Qatar at all. I just thought it was interesting, because it is rare to find casual comments in the US about Qatar (or news about Qatar at all, for that matter). I also saw a pick last week of the Emir with actor Sean Pean and Scarlet Johansson at a charity party. The pic was to advertise that the two actors are dating, but I thought that it was more interesting to see the Emir there. Again nothing bad at all, but just a little different from the formality of the mainstream reporting.
