Those pesky pedestrians

‘Reckless’ driver to pay compensation--Gulf Times

A local motorist has been handed a suspended sentence of one month imprisonment for reckless driving that led to severe injuries to an Egyptian pedestrian. . . .

*The accused said: “I slowed down but the pedestrian ran towards me and hit the side mirror.”*

A medical report showed that the Egyptian sustained 53% injuries (of the entire body). The trial started almost a year after the incident waiting for the recovery of the injured.
The judges dismissed the request of the insurance company not to be involved in the case. The “under training” cars should be insured and the insurer should bear the cost according to the law, the judges said.

There are many roundabouts where there is no pedestrian crossing and there is no signal. How do I cross the road there?

One example, Aramex roundabout. Can anyone tell me how do I cross that without doing something dangerous like running across while cars are rushing at me.

mam,

And I know where the crossing and pedestrian walk and bus stops. What i told is what is the use of them when we need to walk 1/2 Km or more to use it.

I am not smiling because u have not understood what we trying to tell.

BUT, I understood that there is no point of telling the difficulty to someone who is not bothering to understand it.

Only think it will make u understand when u face it.

BUT, I pray god to not to make u into a situation where u will face this difficulties.

Cos, we can adjust to any thing cos we know the difficulty. BUT ppl like u all it will be very difficult to face it.

I don’t like to argue on this with you.

May be pint of views may vary under deferent experiences.

As a pedestrian i think u should adjust. AS a driving person u think we should adjust.

BUT, SOMEONE SHOULD A D J U S T.

For you to tell me to improve it? Can't help but smile :)

You have to know the person quite well before even suggesting it, right?

You are short of overstepping the boundaries and very near the "HOLIER THAN THOU" line....careful :)

slman,

just read your comments.

I totally agree with you.

azilana7037,

My point was for you to improve your empathy towards those who are obliged to cross the road in less safe ways.

Obviously your experience was not sufficient to walk on their shoes.

I, myself totally support them and understand why they across the road putting their lives at risk.

It’s not their fault. They have the education they have and they see themselves in a country that isn’t properly planned and ruled to protect pedestrians.

Empathy was what I was trying to incite in you, not necessarily riding buses!

EVERYONE emphatize with the plight OF THE WORKERS (in Qatar) who works 8-10 hours a day and still need to commute.

You're asking for RESPECT AND CONSIDERATION...it is given openly in one way or the other.

BUT TRY LOOKING AT IT ON THE OTHER SIDE (THOSE WHO HAVE VEHICLES)...we also WORK 8-10 hours EVERYDAY TOO. Everyone experiences what working people experience...and for us who have vehicles, we make sure we drive safely, coz we want to reach our accommodation/houses safe and rest.

RESPECT BEGETS RESPECT...don't forget that. :)

So I'll answer your question:

where is the crossing, where ppl need to go...

--> its those white stripe painted on the road, you could see them near the roundabouts, traffic lights or turn abouts. I'm sure people could see them, even if its faded...BUT some people are just stubborn to use it...

Why vehicle parked on pedestrian walk?

--> Vehicle can't park on the pedestrian walk coz its in the middle of the street. ARE YOU SURE you know what a PEDESTRIAN LANE is or how it looks like. Just want to know...no offense meant

Why cant wait till traffic clear than going over the pedestrian walk?

--> WEll, if the person crossing could walk/run across the street FASTER than a vehicle driving along the street...CROSS AT YOUR OWN RISK. Like I said, some people are just stubborn to follow/do what is right coz they want the easy but dangerous way.

Why cant wait till the public buses load its passengers near the bus stop?

--> I don't understand what you mean by that.

Why cant park properly than parking it front of bus stop where bus drivers not stop even there are passengers due to this mans wrong parking...

--> AGAIN????

As I told early, Yes there are SOME crossings, still for those or from those we should walk more than 15-20 minutes more to reach our place...

--> Do you know the saying "It's better TO BE SAFE than SORRY"?

mam azilana7037 we are not talking about the ppl who are traveling by bus ort walking on the road for FUN...

We are talking about, what u expect from the ppl who are frustrated, restless and ignored workers who walk after working 8-10 hours out.

Do you know another thing, may be out of subject,

They are also ignored by the drivers of the bus too. U all will get proper respect, but when they got in, they are cornered cos, bad dresses, bad English...ect.

we should understand there level of education, and the level of work they do.

and treat them properly when we can.

It is not just saying poor ppl when passing through them in ur vehicle, u must excuse them, u must care them at least slowing ur vehicle when u got to know that they are crossing, at least go slow near the places where they used to cross.

This is an innocent request from all QL members who are driving.

It's not easy to educate them about crossing when relevant authorities not doing safety things than telling them.

But those who read all these can decide what should do when driving.

By slman• 14 Apr 2011 11:56

where is the crossing, where ppl need to go...

If u argue on one on one basis;

Why vehicle parked on pedestrian walk?

Why cant wait till traffic clear than going over the pedestrian walk?

Why cant wait till the public buses load its passengers near the bus stop?

Why cant park properly than parking it front of bus stop where bus drivers not stop even there are passengers due to this mans wrong parking...

All these things are day to day happening in all the places though this unusual crossing are happening in particular places.

As I told early, Yes there are SOME crossings, still for those or from those we should walk more than 15-20 minutes more to reach our place...

I rode the bus and its not really a nice experience being a woman in a closed airconditioned bus full of men...but hey, I SURVIVED :P

I still ride the bus just for the heck of it...to SEALINE or WAKRA on those double-decker buses...its FUN.

I walked to my destination when its absurd to pay QAR 15-20 riyals FOR PRIVATE TRANSPORT when it'll take me 15-20 minutes to get there.

Don't get me wrong...but I think you should try your advise...and tell me/us how it feels.

azilana7037,

Leave your car at home and walk and take the bus for 1 week, you may then find yourself crossing the road in odd places!

Never blame the victims but always those who have the power to improve things (the local authorities) and do nothing!

but no one using them. They would rather go over those barricades, cross the street at their own risk rather than walking a few steps to crossing safely.

Last night, I was driving home using the side/inner streets of Matar Qadeem to avoid the traffic on the main street. This guy appreared from nowhere and walked in the middle of the road. The vehicles have to overtake him. I beeped him and asked him what he doing walking in the middle of the street...if he's on a suicidal mission coz he's gonna get run over if he's not careful. He just stared at me as if I was talking gibberish. GOODNESS GRACIOUS!!!!

the driving instructor has told me: "Pedestrians have the right of way." I believe this is the rule used by the courts.

Funny most of the comments blame pedestrians when all of us have become pedestrians ourselves one time or another.

You should just be careful specially here that there are so many pedestrians who don't know how to cross the road.

Like 2 days ago 4 men crossed the street in front of the new arrivals terminal while holding each others hand. On one end the man wanted to cross, on the other end, guy stopped at the median. So they ended up blocking the street still holding their hands. Luckily one L/C hit his brakes on time. I and the guy in the L/C just smiled and shook our heads in disbelief.

And the funny thing was there is a pedestrian overpass there which almost no one uses.

Isn’t it funny…?

A person who wants to go from Lulu hyper market to alsaad or najma by bus,

Should walk to Mall R/B and then cross the road from the R/B signal and then walk back to Lulu(Opposite side road) and wait for bus….

Same thing apply to who wants to cross road near Villagio, walk till signal cross, then walk back get the bus…

You people don’t have any problem, cos when u come out have the car or any vehicle, get in and go.From Lulu to najma, 5 mints, Lulu to al saad, 15 mints. And for sure there will be no big issues even if u late for office 10-15 minutes,…

BUT, poor we, No vehicle for us…

We should walk all the way… this good Government of Qatar not worrying abt us.. they don’t think that these people also need a place on road same as the vehicles… There are no pedestrian crossings in any major places… Knowing there are accidents happening they all and even u all complaining the pedestrians…

Even 1 seconds u all don’t feel like slow down ur vehicle and let the person to cross the road. It will delay you only 10 seconds, that even u can catch by little more acceleration where u can do… BUT when we missed a bus we need to wait 20-40 mints to get next bus or pay 15-20 mints for taxi. Even we should wait 10-15 mints for taxi.

MORETHAN THAT, even one minute delay our company cuts ½ day salary. We cant blame them. That’s there rule they say. They cant excuse us cos they tell it will become a practice.

SO AS POOR EMPLOYEES WHAT U ALL EXPECTING FROM US… HOW WE CAN THINK MORE ON THE ROAD WITHOUT WORRYING the T I M E.

THINK ABOUT US TOOO. WE ARE SO POOR THAT’S WHAT MAKES US TO BE TARGETED BY EVRYONE…

According to the Gulf Times, pedestrian deaths account for 1 in 5 road deaths--a pedestrian death rate that is twice that of the world average and something like 20 times that of the UK.
