i am not a MD but what i know you worth way more than that...you are sacrificing to change your life style and cross Atlantic....noo.noooo don't settle with less or you gonna regret it....Oooo yeah
No, the private clinics won't pay anything and you can see why when you look at their fees. Compared to the West, medical care is vey cheap here. The only places that MAY pay Western rates for Western physicians are HMC (if they recruit you) and Aspetar.
am a Canadian trained specialist family physician doing excellently here and was looking for opportunities in Qatar due to family situation. It was really disappointing. Can someone help with contacts. I read the posts above. There is no way they'll pay 20-25% above what I make here.
Tried to PM you, but for some reason I don't see the msg in my "sent" folder.
The HMC chief of service told me I could expect 50-60,000QAR/mo, which is significantly less than what my specialty makes over here. Do you have any specific examples of the 25 plus plus arrangement at HMC?
25% plus plus has been the standard package for westerners for Hamad Medical Corp and for the six American universities in Qatar. Well, with the exception of Texas A&M which offers very competitive salary in the US plus 30%. We've been in medical in the Gulf for ten years now. Feel free to PM me.
Don't sell yourself short! The Gulf isn't worth it, believe me. If you're not at the top of the food chain here it's a miserable existence. Your employers will know exactly what you are making and what the standard is here, if you settle for less they will treat you as second-class. Especially if you are a Western physician. You are?
Yes, I am divesting, so all $ will be tax free. However, I was recently offered a job in Saudi for half the gross I am currently earning (consultant), and they didn't budge in negotiations. I am hoping that Qatar has deeper pockets, or it won't be worth it. So...I'm thinking that going in with a starting position of current gross plus 25 might be a little extreme, given the regional remuneration.
Watch out for those "tax free dollars." You still owe taxes in the US and if you are Canadian you have to divest of all property and financial ties in order to qualify for tax free status. And yes, 25% is considered fair,if not minimal.
Thanks for your reply! That is interesting. I am coming from N America...so you really think I can ask for 25% more, when in Qatar I'll be earning tax free dollars?

Oh yes, I am very Western and very white. May I ask how you come by your advice?
