New to Qatar - Need advice =)

Hi,

I am relatively new to Qatar and I am finding it very difficult to meet people and have something resembling a social life. So I would like the kind advice of those on the Qatar Living website on how to settle and enjoy myself here.

A bit of background:
- 26 year old male from Australia (with middle east background - though don't speak Arabic)
- I work in a workplace mainly consisting of colleagues with families, older than me, etc (i.e. no-one with the same interests or of 'single' adventurous mindset).
- Enjoy sports, live music, reading, movies, travel, etc.

I really like my job and have an initial contract until April, with the option to stay longer. So far, I have struggled to meet anyone due to my work situation as well as my home situation. If things don't improve, I can't foresee myself staying much longer than April (which would be regrettable because I really love my job).

So, to all the other people out there without families, etc - what are some good activities/places for meeting other people in my situation?

Many thanks in advance for the advice - I would really appreciate it!

I agree with rod.b.d.b :)

You need to go out more often, explore..

Join some clubs here.

How about the diving club, QSAC? Considered that?

There's loads of sports clubs and stuff. Get yourself down to Carrefour (or other book store) and get hold of a copy of the Explorer Qatar guide. It's got a whole section on sports clubs and societies and stuff.

I think the rule here is not to sit in your digs waiting for opportunities to arise; you need to explore these things, decide what you like the look of and grab the opportunity with both hands.

Good luck!

Haha I didn't mean to post twice!

Any advice would be useful, thank you "Rod.b.d.b", I'll consider that!

I know Doha is more for families, I would just like to meet some like minded people. Unfortunately my workplace is no good for that!

Contrary to what "Pretty ice 2007" said, this is not meant as a 'personal' notice =)

Join the Rugby Club. You can join in in the training sessions, maybe get a game, and utilise the bar and other facilities. Your social life will present itself to you!
