Newton British School
I have a child at Newton British School and am concerned at the growing class sizes, I don't think my child is receiving a decent education since the class size increased. Is anyone else having this problem the principal seems to be doing nothing about this or is it better just to try & move schools?
Its a teacher's job to mark homework! MMMM I've heard that the principal does not deal with problems too
Thanks cabbage
I think the issues are the teacher cannot cope with the increased class size its well over 20 and there is only a TA every other day not with the teacher all the time. The teacher was great till she was given a lot more children. The teacher is not marking homework and there are 4 classes and its the same in all. I spoke to the teacher & she is so busy after school with meetings and ECAs she has no time, its pitiful really.
I get nowhere with the principal she does not seem to care and just wants problems to go away!
Think a change in school is all that will help!
Thanks for your advice
If you find that shocking try being a Teacher.
I have had kids in the UK that did not have a clue in class and then went back with 'homework' and came back with excellent stuff.
When asked; they had no idea about the subject and said, my mum/dad did it lol
I just laughed.
The kids did nothing wrong nor did the parents.
I can't believe my eyes when I see parents doing their kids' homework. It was not even an option for me, maybe my elder siblings helped me out a couple of times in drawing (I was rubbish at that) but apart from that never.
Here in my office, I see some parents doing their kids' homework during lunch break.. I find it hilarious....
I agree. I think kids get far too much homework. Home is where they should be able to relax.
Half the time the parents end up doing the kids homework for them anyway.
I don't think I am the only teacher that has made a comment like this:- 'Well done Mr Smith, fantastic effort' lol
The only thing my dad used to teach me at home was Indian & world politics, he never bothered with my school books. Those I was supposed to learn at school :P
Did not do you any harm them :-/ lol
Some classes in small villages in the UK have 30 with 3 different year groups.
It all depends on the teacher, the head and how much effort the parents put in to.
I studied in a class of atleast 60 students my entire life except during MBA when it was 37 and I never had any problem. Sometimes I felt the class size is too small :-P
Depends on the teachers and depends on how much interest your kid shows in the class.
Class size can impede on learning but it is not the only issue.
A good teacher can have a large class with mixed abilities and still be an effective teacher.
A small class is defined as 20 or under. How many children are in your Childs class?
If it is over this and the teacher is not able to control that class or is a weak teacher the Head should be notified, in writing with a copy to the governors.
I would do this in the form of e-mail (backed up with a letter handed in). This will guarantee he ‘receives it’. Should you receive a reply you are not happy with; write back in a ‘slightly stronger’ tone reminded him, he did not respond in a helpful way; i.e. your questions remain unanswered.
Keep to the salient points and keep it succinct.
You asked about other British Schools. One man’s meat is another’s poison. In choosing a good school, one has to go round them first; go towards the end of play time. This way you can see, supervision on the playground and observe the behaviour of the children at play.
Observe a class in progress:-
Does the teacher have a calm manner?
Are the children taking notice?
How does the teacher redirect the lesson back to them should there be an interruption?
Do the children look happy?
How much homework do they get?
Good luck.
Thanks luluatariq, that is what I been thinking. Seems a lot of parents have names down at other schools so I will join them!
Can you or anyone recommend a good school with British curriculum?
Hi,
I think your child will not have the proper education in this type of classes.Try to find another school with at list smaller number of children.I am in International school Step One in Al Hilal and the classes are not so big.I think its a good school. After all everything is business so the one who is thinking of your child is you.
Good luck!
