Why Racism is started in Qatar,

Racism might refer to the idea that a single race is somehow purer than other races, or that one race genetically exhibits dominance over others.

Racism can be used to refer to prejudice based on race against one person or a group of people; it can be expressed either overtly or subtly. Overt racism is perhaps the easiest to identify. It is fairly simple to see that the actions/treatment of some nationalities over another. They openly proclaim superiority of the their race and inferiority of another.

I believe this is what the OP is taking about.

Many times, when they cannot straight away identify what is your ethnic background to enable them to exert that feeling of superiority or prejudice, they ask you: Where are you from? Since arriving in Qatar, I have been asked that question more than a 100 times...

Man...I love it when people ask me where I am from..or how come your are British and you're not white...I looove the expression left on their face when I answer them back!!!

Last time the guy asked me where I was from, I looked straight at him and told him very firmly I was from Guangdong China, any problem with that?...he was speechless. I did not like the tone he was using in asking the question. At times I would say to those whose first question to you Where are you from, "it depends on what you want to hear or where you wished I'd come from!!! or whatever you want it to be or this is a private information I cannot share with you" I only reply like this when I get annoyed by the way they look at you from top to bottom or the tone they use.

Bottom line is: Nobody can make you feel inferior without your consent. My daddy taught me that. Racism will be always in the open if one of you feels some inferiority/nationality complex vis a vis the other person/nationality who in turn notices that and exploits it to his advantage...at the end of the day we all have this animal instinct in us...overpower the other! It's natural.

I feel sorry when I see those Indians/Nepalis/SriLakans/Philipinos middle management getting a bashing from their bosses. Why are they like that? Why do they have this submissive attitude when they are well educated? To me submissiveness is next to stupidity.

couldn't agree more, but a fact i've seen many Non Engineer Indians (say, diploma holder or associate engineers)on Engineer posts in these three Government base organisations.

Uranus..ppl over here don't understand the fact like who is who..u pointed out India for drivers..tats not ryt..Indians rule the GCC indirectly..be it from drivers,groceries,supermarkets,cafeteria,Engineers,Doctors,Managers...whatever.. Indians r ter...without Indians the GCC is a big zero...say for example the back bone of Qatar are 3 main companies Qatar petroleum,Qatar gas and Ras gas..get into these companies and hav a look...95% of the engineers are Indians..few countable europeans and some DUMB ASS qataris at wrong place....go to any engineering companies be it MNC or localised most of the engineers will be Indians...am not boasting abt anything but its the fact...Indians hav a big role in shaping the middle east...

@vignale...You hav point in wat u r trying to explain..u said u want a change and so u r here..ppl in Asia feel europe as better and they try to move ter..it is quite common thought among us...but as far as I know everyone(asians,arabs) talk abt the europeans over here are the unsuccesfull ones back home..

Salary on offer usually boils down to how much an employer has to offer a potential employee to persuade him/her to leave his/her home country and come here to work. This is more applicable for lower/junior positions and less applicable for management/senior positions.

Negotiated & agreed salaries tend to be somewhat proportionate to Gross National Income (GNI) per capita at purchasing power parity (PPP) in the country of origin of the employee.

By the way, while I agree that some people do discriminate on the basis of skin color, race, religion or nationality, this is NOT the primary reason for the disparity in salaries that is seen here.

but I remember one incident when one western foreman or engineer was shouting at one man infront of me because he wanted to cross a blocked way. The way he was shouting at that man and waving with his hands pissed me off. He was shouting at him as an animal, instead of going to the man's car and requesting him to move and take another street.

So what did I do? Although he was not shouting at me, but i did not like the way he behaved with others. I simply reacted back to him in a much worse way than what he did with that man. I won't say what I have done, but I am sure that he got a good lesson how to speak politely and behave in this country.

Qatar is probably the most overtly racist place I have ever lived, and I have lived all over the world. Racism is a part of every place, but here it is the norm and totally accepted if not encouraged. Part of the problem is the national caste system for jobs--Nepal for janitors, India for drivers, Philippines and Sri Lanka for maids and retail stores, non-Gulf Arabs for middle management, Europe for upper management and consultants, America for specialized professionals working for contracted American companies.

I have a colleague that is Indian by ethnicity (US citizen by birth). He is highly educated, a top professional, etc., but he gets stopped every Friday at the mall unless his family is with him, and people at stores are always speaking to him as if he works in them.

And for every racist Westerner who looks down at and Asian, there are a dozen racist Asians who are bitter and assume he is an overpaid washout that couldn't cut it in his own country. It cuts both ways.

The French have just issued their soldiers with the lates Body armour.

Bhagat - For many People, Money is not the reason why you take another job, It could be you want a change and experience new things, it could be to see other Countries and learn to understand other Cultures. For me it is a mix of that, and I do not intend to go back, it is too cold for me.

Sunnyday951, to believe that Europeans come here because they do not get a job back home is plain silly - I agree we all see losers here, but the real losers without a job back home they stay put, they would not like to move a kilometer and why should they - the Government pay them more than what they would earn here in Unemployment benefits at home..

I think you simplify the issue to much, and Honestly- I do not think the majority of Europeans come here for the Money, except for the Brit's of Course. In Northern Europe the Money is far better than here - even if you count in the Tax Paid so it is certainly not because of the Money I am here.

history tells us: you only stop being treated like this when you do something about it! NO ONE will deport you for standing up to yourself and defending yourself when need be.

Being polite is important but not with people who take advantage of it. IN Qatar, sadly, many people accept being treated like this.

Maybe you do need to learn something from the westerners that you envy so much. How to negotiate. Remember it's the employers not the employees that set the salaries. Why do they pay more for westerners?

I am white skin Arab and until now I couldn't find a job. well discrimination is every where and we have to stop people by ourselves . If your manager is not paying you extra as he sees that you don't deserve it will stand one hand and say excuse me we gonna quit . Treat him by law ; NOC and visa transfer is a must on employer to employee. Last Year I read in one of local Arabic news paper about a case in the court raised by an Asian Labor against his sponsor as he didn't want to give him a chance in transferring his immigration to another employer and he won the case.

I will tell you most of foreigners , specialy some western people not all they think that we are here to teach you to let you learn from us .Excuse me we don't need to teach us we have brains and we can work better than you!!!!
