he is right...

first...

u must know what u r going to do with the cam. (ur need)

where u want to use.. (more light or less light.)

what u want to shoot (face, function, sports, landscape.)

then select the cam as per ur need...

if you cant find a exact answer for these question then but basic dslr cam.

it will surly comes within the budget.

first i bought nikon D3000...

see my photos here....

http://www.flickr.com/photos/supeesh/

the photos till the qatar national day fire works was taken in D3000.

all the photos after that was taken in D7000.

only reason y i changed D3000 is..

its a CCD sensor (not good for low light)

low shutter speed (only 1/4000)

and only 4 continues shoots can be taken then u have to wait till the buffer memory is free.

and D3100 is better than D3000.

it has CMOS sensor.

more pix

and u can take short videos.

sorry i never tried canon.

thats y i am not able to tell anything abt canon.

one last thing.

dont ever buy camera from qatar.

i bought my D7000 from US. and it came around 5500qr (for body)

u can get D90 body around 3500qr. (not from qatar)

thats lesser than anywhere is qatar

I heard prices in Dubai are much cheaper than here in Qatar.

Everyone's right about saying that the camera is not entirely responsible in making good photos, mostly it is the wielder who uses it. Though Canon and Nikon holds close to 80% of the worlds DSLR market, it's not rocket science to know which brand is better. Sorry Sony and Olympus. And though Nikon has the upper hand in good quality lens, it doesn't have a large flotilla of lenses like the Canon system have. And to quote, Nikkor lenses are more expensive than Canons.

There are a lot more reasons for these two to be your choice of weapon. You will only get confused reading and listening to these people telling you which camera is better. I suggest you read more "independent" reviews (from the internet), know your budget, go to a camera store, and feel the camera. And then you will know what you will want.

Browse Ken Rockwell's website. He tells everything you want to know about photography. Though he's a Nikon user, I find his site useful for beginners.

i am planning to buy it from the US as qatar the prices are quite high.

Reviewing between Canon EOS Rebel T1i / T2i and Nikon D3100 as beginner i am impressed with nikon D3100.

Getting it off amazon for approx 600 USD.

Does anyone know the price for the nikon D3100 in Qatar ??

Sakib i am a beginner as you and hopefully we can get some good reviews from our fellow Qlers and decide the right camera for us :)

Saqib Bhai, Azamat's right on the point on this one.

Also disregard the fanboys (and girls) who'll keep saying canon is better than nikon or nikon is better than olympus or sony or pentax etc etc. Instead list out what your priorities are (low light? speed? weather sealing? ergonomics? etc?) and read reviews on dpreview.com to find out which body is best for you.

Play with your point-n-shoot first, see what you like, read up (obviously on what matters to you) and then decide. Don't jump in too quickly just yet. Also remember, make it fun. Discover more too. You'll grow on it.

more lens choices than nikon. you are really into a system when it comes to dslr. so choose wisely.

For your viewing pleasure - Pictures taken with a Asahi Pentax Takumar lenses, older than you and me put together, bought off ebay for $50 and some change.

I bet your neighbour with his fancy Nikon D7000 / Canon 7D can't take half as good pics as this one ;)

500D isn't a "pro" body. However it will make excellent pictures. Correction... the camera doesn't make the picture, it's the photographer. Get a Canon 450/500/550 or Nikon 3100/5000/7000(this one is semi-pro). Skip the bundled kit lens and get something better. Don't worry about "mega-pixels" That's a marketing term invented by the marketing department to sell point n shoot cameras to people who don't know the first thing about picture taking. Anything above 10-12 megapixels is more than sufficient unless you are planning to make wall sized prints.

Anyway, regardless of what what system you go for (CaNikon/Pentax/Sony) spend some time learning the basics of photography, buy one or two good lenses. Don't worry about the body, it will get outdated in no time.

Read the forums at DPreview etc. Most of your questions are answered.

If you want a starter Nikon system I would suggest D5000 + 18-105mm VR lens + 35mm f/1.8 lens.

Why buy a 500D, when you can buy a 550D. Price difference in just minimal. Besides the 550D will be replaced soon anytime this year. So your 500D will be preceded twice by a new model. With a 3k budget, you can only go for entry level cams like Canon 550D, 500D, & 1000D or Nikon D3100, D3000, & D5000. It's not all about the body that produces a good quality image, but a good "fast lens" (if you know what it means).

thanks for the suggestion.. so u suggest that 500D is ok for me. what about the reviews on 500D ? earlier this month i went to a match in Qatar ExxonMobil Tennis. i saw to koreans using 500D even when they are professionals. what can u assume from this ?

well...

nikon d7000 is a good one.

but its more than 3000qr.

i think its 6500 in salam (body only)

7500qr with 18-105 lens.

and its less in carrifore..

now d90 is a good one...

not pro but semi pro.......

i think d3000 or d3100 will be good for u.

d3100 is the latest one. so u better go 4 that.

its also entry level camera but better pix and all than d3000.

i used d3000 for more than 9 months...

now i am using d7000 and took more than 6000 photos..

its very good camera..

sorry that i dont know about canon..

I'm assuming you're currently using some kinda point-n-shoot cam?

Read up a bit on composition etc etc and try it on your point-n-shoot first. (Tip: 1/3 composition rule is actually not written in stone..but it helps).

If you like photography, you'll need to understand that you can get some good shots from your point-n-shoot as well.

I do not recommend going beyond your point-n-shoot until you figure out what you really like about photography. Especially if you have a tight budget.

Once you figure that out, it's generally between Canon or Nikon.

Canon entry level 500D

Nikon entry level D90 (replacement D7000 is having some pretty rave reviews)

500D is entry level not pro :)

500D is a good start to work your way to pro maybe full frame 5D?

Have you considered D7000?
