Is my wage worth it?

I recieved an offer to work in Qatar for just over 12,000QR a month as basic salary. This excludes accomodation, transport etc which will all be paid for. This translates to about 40,000AUD a year which seems ridiculous.

Personally I feel it is a very low salary to recieve. Especially considering I earn even more where I am currently from.

What do you think? Is this the normal salary to recieve? Thanks.

Thank you for all your helpful responses.

After declining the first offer and letting them know my expected salary, thy have now more than doubled my offer. It all came down to the idea of negotiation and testing the water I guess :)

You mention you are Australian of Middle Eastern heritage. Your prospective employer may be lowballing you based on the ethnicity of your name - discrimination based on nationality/ethnicity is rampant in the GCC. You might be working next to someone named Jones with white skin and blue eyes and he might easily be paid 2 or 3 times (at least) what you are with an Arabic (not GCC) last name - even with the same education and experience, however, holding an Australian passport should avoid some if not all of that bias.

I've worked with a RECRUITMENT AGENCY in QATAR few years back and thus having an idea about the kind of wages being offered to the westerners...

Frankly speaking, the salary offered to you is DAMN LOW...

i won't recommend you to accept it any cost unless they increase your package to more than of what you are getting at present in OZ..

blaqdog said, "What's funnier is that with tax, I'm still earning more in Australia than I will be if I take this offer in Qatar."

Then why move in the first place? Qatar is not a walk in the park. There are many challenges to working there, not just the open oven for 8 months of a year, which those from developed countries like yours will take quite a lot of getting used to.

Anyway, all the best in the proposed salary upgrade.

It would help to know what kind of job you have been offered - is it in teaching, engineering...?

Cheers UKEng, I actually knew this.

What's funnier is that with tax, I'm still earning more in Australia than I will be if I take this offer in Qatar.

They are looking into upgrading my salary anyway so will wait and see what happens.

Thank you ricky_2005 for your helpful response.

As for timebandit and a few other smart-alecks - what is your problem? I'm not having a brag that I earn so much $$$ nor am I complaining about the Qatari way of life. I am an Aussie with middle eatern heritage who has an understanding of both sides of the world, so please leave the crap out of your responses or don't bother replying to my thread.

I'm simply trying to get a jist of what the salaries are like here in Qatar and gather some thoughts and opinions. Not some of the rudeness I've been shown.

Thanks again to everyone who has given their opinions.

The offered package is too low . Anything below

QAR 18,000 Basic is low . You should negotiate for

QAR 18,000 Basic salary + QAR 7000 HRA + Car allowanace QAR 2500 +QAR 1000 mobile phone allowance +annual airtickets to australia ( business class as too far distance Doha -sydney -Doha ) . Bonus as per norms should be ok . Furniture allowance QAR 10,000 per year .

blaqdog what do you want us here on QL to do for you? Or are you just having a moan in general? The wage has been offered to you. Only you know what is best for you.

If you like give us the details of the employer and me and the boys will pop around there and tell them to offer you more or else.

By Oryx• 6 Dec 2010 08:14

Well thank them for their kind offer but due to the fact you earn wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy more in Sydney after much consideration unfortunately you will have to decline ;)

That would be low even for a teachers job here. With that type of wage, the housing would also be questionable and by that, i mean probably lousy. While the cost of living is reasonable here, we find things to be comparable in price to home (Canada). I don't know about your tax implications for living overseas, but i'd guess you'd be better of staying home for that amount.

I cannot tell you if your wage is worth it if I don't know what you currently do in Aus.

Nonetheless, if you are currently earning much more than you've been offered in Qatar, then stay where you are. If you don't accept the offer, they will get someone else who will work for that salary :-(

By blaqdog• 6 Dec 2010 07:29

The job was advertised locally through an internal source.

I note that they stated the salary was "very attractive". I can't help but feel confused considering we earn way more here in Sydney.

I would love the opportunity to work in Qatar. But I wouldn't sacrifice my family, friends and so much more to earn less than what I do here.

Come to Qatar, you will love it, and you will have some experience working in the region that may benefit you later in life.

Opportunities are there to be taken, you never know where they may lead ;)

They do take your level of skill though,i would assume they will hike your pay gradually. In any case, you will have to speak to them about this particular package.

Sadly, as with anywhere else, It is a matter of supply and demand. Perhaps, they can get your skillsets from other countries at a cheaper rate.

Was the advert in an Aussie paper ?

By blaqdog• 6 Dec 2010 05:42

I'm from Sydney. The standard pay professionals in my field recieve here would be close to 70K. It goes all the way up to 100K AUD.

I would expect, considering I'm moving overseas on a single contract with no family or friends, to be paid no less than 90K AUD.

I'm being offered 40K AUD which sounds terrible. I'm also annoyed that I was told through the advert that the pay was "very generous".
