What is the tv like in comparison to the UK with regards choice of programmes. Is there SKY TV for example with the full range of programmes as offered in the UK if not what is on offer?
The TV here is pretty awful and certainly nothing like even the most basic SKY package.
Lots of ex-pats go for Mozaic which gets you TV, telephone and internet.
As far as channels go there are plenty of news channels, some music, lots of arabic stuff. UK stuff is limited to Granada channel and BBC entertainment (come dine with me, eastenders, strictly, etc) and lifestyle (goodness knows what that shows). You have to pay extra for that and extra for the football.
The quality is certainly not HD and despite the website saying you can record onto a HDD, you can't.
The good news is that 'expat surfer' works excellently and also it is download city here as internet usage is unlimited.
To be honest since we had satellite installed we have only watched a few hours of TV.
The movies are mostly gentle comedies, romcoms, and Adam Sandler movies. If there is any cursing or a sex scene, they cut it out and move onto the next scene. It is mostly dreck, but 1-2 movies a week are something interesting and being cut up is not that big a deal.
I'm a big movie lover, so I don't watch much regular programming. Maybe one night a week I turn on the movie channel and watch. You can't get Hulu to stream on the internet. Don't know if you are familiar with that service.
Can't quite answer your question because I'm from the U.S. My company sponsors my utilities and I have basic cable. Some other workers, mostly British, pay extra for sports packages. My programming is about 800 channels of Italian, French, Lebanese, Jordanian, etc.... Hardly any Indian, as far as I can tell. (strange) But there several news channels, Al Jazeera, CNN, BBC international, South Korean in English, and a couple others. I like the S.K. programming. It is very gentle and soothing. Also, there are motorsports, horse racing, and futbal in many languages. Tough to watch for me. There are two channels that show American movies and the other shows cop/detective/action programs that I've never seen before with B-actors. Both have arabic subtitles.

Do you know if you can pick up BBC or ITV iplayer from the internet?
