More or less racist after living in Qatar?

Has living in Qatar made you more or less racist?

I'm new more or less to Qatar and am amazed at the diversity of races, nationalities, ethnicities, faces, modes of dress, etc., etc. But I am also surprised at how quickly people seem to explain things according to racial or national stereotypes.

So expats (and nationals too if you want to weigh in), has living in Qatar made you less or more likely to stereotype people according to their race and/or nationality? And is the effect made worse or less the longer you have lived here? Since this is anonymous we can be honest ;)

Nobody is born racist, you become one, depending on your surrounding. We come from a multicultural environment, so race is never an issue.

But once you are here ie the ME, your race, your colour, your nationality.....everything becomes an issue, like a passport. It decides whether you are in or out. Ugh....

I don't chose or converse with others looking at their race or nationality or religion..I've never been racist and don't think i would ever be...

Was never bothered too much about race, religion, ethnicity till I came here.

What irritates me is that it's "practised" so openly.

Yea somehow London is an exception! I feel home when I'm visiting London lol.

And you're right, even in the UK people stereotype. Because you're not white, ride a hot car, then you either have stolen it, or you're drug dealer. Some enlightened people would suggest that you're an Arab, and you have a gas station at your house.

By anonymous• 21 Aug 2010 11:56

bojassem I feel your pain bro, I am a local and people in UK think I am drug dealer when I go out of London because I am not white and have a nice vehicle. Walla moshkila al ajanib.

I'm a local guy and have been studying in the UK for the past 4 years. To be honest, racism is everywhere. As a Muslim and an Arab, sometimes I feel uncomfortable in the UK.

But ya the same goes for you expatriates in Qatar I guess :p

and yes, some of us do generalize or stereotype by nationalities. That's a sad fact.

I found the Kuwaitis snobbish , arrogant and elitist.. The funny thing is that during the Gulf War I was in Saudi. Some Kuwaiti families escaping from Kuwait refused to live in our compound because they thought it was not up to their standards.. :O)

I have some very good lebanese friends like KH and few others. tonight I met one twat with greasy hair and pointy shoes telling me that there is no place for a shisha when half of the cafe was empty.

Give me Indian filipinos any day..:)

By GodFather.• 21 Aug 2010 00:07
GodFather.

this is the just the thread I needed tonight. Went to QRC to make my donation to wonderful volunteers Speed and co. As I was driving back noticed a Tent next to a Hotel called Al Bustan. Decide to check it out for my next weeks coffee/shisha meet.

Went inside and asked if I could be seated to have some tea and shisha.

First the twat said yes please come with me. Then he decided to change is mind and said we are fully booked. I pointed to all those empty tables. He said there are reservations. I said surely you can accomodate one person. Anyway was in a good mood so just left with out any drama.

After I left and came back and read this thread and posts on this thread I actually realise that I have been a victim of clear racial discrmination by a low life twat.

But the funny thing is that why did I not feel it then. Is it because we have become immune to this kind of behaviour whicj would not be tolerated in any civilised society.

WK I am glad you did not come with me otherwise there would've been big drama..

Specially when you live in a country like Qatar where you interact with many nationalities and happen to see a majority of x nationality possessing similar negative characteristics, you can then fall into generalization and racism. What you need then is to keep a check on your emotions at such times which may not be easy!

I noticed some people changed as they've stayed longer in Qatar.... They really became racist. I don't understand why they have to be such.

Fortunately for me, after almost two years and having had coped and ajusted to this entirely new environment, nothing changed... it's still the same me.

I think it's our outlook in life that really matters..

It's not so bad actually. It is normal to associate one person's behaviour with his entire race in a multi-cultural environment. At individual level, people are still nice.

One thing that i have observed is that how easily and frequently people attribute anything peculiar to the other persons' nationality...he is doing this because he of xxx nationality or she is a xxx nationality so she will do this...in fact it comes out as a matter of fact.
