By DohaBloke

I've been taking cabs for the past 2 years. And decided TODAY I WILL START LISTING PUBLICLY ALL THE KARWA CABS that refuse to take passengers using meters, and ask for flat rate which they determine themselves.

I will continue to post this regularly for everyone to see. Let's call this my own way of watchdogging and to keep these cabbies and Karwa Mgnt to behave and abide to the rules in Qatar.

Pls join me if you have similar incidents by just listing the registration number, time, date and location of incident. I will start.

Cab reg number : 2878

Also forgot to mention that I took a picture of the meter with the actual fare, in case there was any dispute involving the police.

It's illegal, demand they should use the meter, if they say no simply say you are calling the police. They cannot ask you to leave the cab. The meter is there for a reason.

I took a cab once and although the meter was on, the person wanted to charge me 25 QR when the meter said 18, I gave him 20... keep the change and if you have a problem with that, let's call the police and see who will end up loosing.

The driver decided to leave it as it is...

this is not good. they should use the meter.

polka dots, but I was making a point about the PRINCIPLE of the issue. You do know what a principle is, don't you? Me stealing the company credit card for a Monte Carlo vacation is no different from a Karwa driver cheating the company out of a fare and cheating the passenger out of a properly metered and priced fare.

By anonymous• 16 Jul 2010 20:49
anonymous

Vaccation to Montecarlo????These cabbies can hardly spell it let lone visit it with the extra buck they are making!

to get a raise, polkadots. At one point do you draw the line? Can I use a company credit card to take a vacation to Monte Carlo, since I am not paid enough to cover it?

By gudone• 16 Jul 2010 15:35

aha gadarene.. thts a gud system!!!... shud adopt it here...

By anonymous• 16 Jul 2010 12:35

For all those supporting this saying "do you know how much they get paid?"...in a country with the highest GDP on the planet & this being a Govt. organization,it's upto Karwa to be paying them what they deserve...what the hell does the passenger have anything to do with how much they're being paid???...& that is no excuse for ripping people off...

It is possible to have a system that actually works, like in Dubai, you pick up the phone & call a cab, that call is registered @ the centre which has satellite monitoring of every single cab,so they know sitting there, which cab is empty & which one is occupied & which empty one is closest to your location & instructions are sent to that cab to head to your location...

As for not running the metre...again full satellite monitoring from the centre...so for example, it would be impossible for the cab to leave the rank @ city centre & drive to Al Sadd(or any other location) without running the metre, because the cab would show as "unoccupied" on the monitors @ the centre,so they would know that the driver has taken a passenger without running the metre...it's a foolproof system that works, the proof being @ most times,it's WAY easier to get a cab in Dubai than it is here...

An official @ Dubai Taxi i met once, while on a trip there explained this system to me when i told him about issues people had getting a cab in Doha & how cabbies cheat the passengers & the company by not running the meter...

So it can work...if it will ever work here, that is a completely different question...

polkadots, which ever way you want to look at it. In relation to my boss i am poor but do not steal from him. I know what you are trying to say and i can understand, but theft is theft, and there are alot of people worse off than the cab drivers i can assure you.

Criminals would get caught far less often if they were not greedy. First it is taking one person off meter a day, then two, before you know it the driver is depending on taking 25% or more, the business cannot profit, and then we get a new cab company with new drivers who don't know the city. For those of us that use the cabs, knowledge, cool air, and pleasant environment (smells good, nice music, clean) are worth the money, but a driver willing to steal from their employer is not robin hood, they steal and we lose, that simply cannot be justified.

By LostInSpace• 16 Jul 2010 10:51

they are thieves then?

Finding a free taxi around my place is like finding water in the desert :) I had to walk 30 min to find a cab. So i didn't actually care he didn't turn on the meter :) Giving 10 riyals more is worth sitting in a free taxi and driving to your destination already.

By anonymous• 16 Jul 2010 10:42

Definitely stealing from the company, I don't work for Karwa, Keeping Karwa's best interest is not my prerogative,Helping/donating to the poor is.Once in a while donations does good for me.

from you or the company when the meter is not running! it really is that simple.

By anonymous• 16 Jul 2010 10:33

thieves don't do your work first do they ???

100%of what a thief takes from you is not due to him. But here the money you pay driver is 90%his due, only 10% extra,so why equate him with a thief?

By LostInSpace• 16 Jul 2010 10:26
LostInSpace

What are you on about? why would anyone in their right mind "donate" to thieves? because regardless of their income they are stealing! end of.

By anonymous• 16 Jul 2010 10:21

Have some mercy for the poorer people, try considering the extra fare you pay as a form of donation to the poor. These drivers are not going to make castles any way with the extras they charge!

Am not symphatetic to these drivers who does 'contract' fare. But will highly suggest your practice. Couldn't say it works for me though, haven't encountered it and very seldom do I use a cab. :)

and why are we caring about such drivers now? It's we who get the free ride after all ;-)... i say 5/5, why? because it worked for me EVERY time!!!

By Hu Wan• 14 Jul 2010 11:34

chance that the driver is just waiting for this 'window' of opportunity. He wanted to go home to his country but don't have the money. Having a fight with you would hasten it! Yes, he'll get to see the prison walls for a short time, but he'll be deported soon enough. Plausible? That's for the half star! Lol!

If ever I need to ride in a Karwa, I flag one that has the "Karwa" light lit up. I don't even bother to ask, I just get in, sit my ass down and tell him where i needa go.

If he refuses to go, I blatantly refuse to get out. If he tells me of a flat rate, I nod my head in affirmation and when i reach my destination, I get the fcuk out and walk, not even bothering to pay a single riyal.

Seldom do they chase after me for the money, cause they know they can't do shiet if I don't pay up. If they do chase after me, I threaten to note down their taxi number and report them.

TRY THAT... highly recommended ;-)

Now the people they get private taxi because of the karwa drivers behavior sometimes they deny to ride also.Come on karwa management you need to do something.

By Hu Wan• 14 Jul 2010 08:54

it's an exercise in futility. There was a thread about Karwa's service and their top honcho even posted some comments here, assuring the riding public of his efforts to improve. Eventually he resigned, perhaps realizing the quixotic task ahead of him was an impossible dream. You just have to improve your negotiating skills (cajole, threathen if it's necessary) or take another cab and literally take the heat in the present weather! :)

Yes I thought about renting and I am from Los Angeles, so driving with madness is normal, but I am thinking of hiring a private driver unless we do a project way out of town. Thanks for the 60 Riyals info, I will have to track down somewhere with that price.

u shud call a newspaper hot line or perhaps report to the police or karwa management! I really hate karwa, i was a fan of orange/white taxis :)

The next time try this - get into the cab demanding a flat rate and when you reach your destination, don't pay up. They cannot do anything, simply because it's their fault in the 1st place for not turning on the meter.

Secondly, if they demand the money, you can tell them you're noting down the cab # and are going to complain to the relevant authorities.

Trust me, they will stfu and drive away... ;-)

lot of replies no taxi number till now.

yesterday it happened to me also.the driver asked for the flat rate .I have no choice but to pay him as there were almost no taxies and after waiting for long I got one.I was not knowing about the thread otherwise I would have noted the number.

Crnkshft.. Why don't u try renting a car .. It's just abt 60 riyals a day.. And go wherever/wenever u want? Better deal isn't it?

When a Taxi driver takes a fare without the meter they are stealing from their employeer...

I do not care what they are being paid for salary, they picked the job and I expect them to do it in an honest way.

the question is not wether you are over charged or not. It is not legal. How come the authorities do not take any action?

I was just accused of being disrespectful by a cabbie the other day, but compared to US cab fares condition of the cars and smell of the drivers, price is the only bright spot. Not running the meter is stealing, there can be no justification for stealing, even if they were polite, smelled good, and by some miracle of God could get you to a destination without driving through the busiest round abouts, and circling down to city center no matter where you are headed. But I digress

I don't bother bargaining these days anymore. Because I know the rates of my route, and if they refuse to use meter and open their mouth demanding flat rate, I walk out get into another. And I will post EVERY CAB REGISTRATION NUMBER and DETAILS here.

This is for Karwa to take action or the authority to do something to keep the country's name well.

For the past 2 years ur taking taxi's and you know the exact taxi fare registering in their meter, so bargain to the exact taxi fare and if he still don't accept it try to look for other or go colorum.

Do they overcharge you when they offer flat rates or is it comparable to the actual fare?
