What does Doha need?

I have been living here for a while and to be honest initially Doha was quite boring unless you have a great circle of friends (which took some time to build but it's great now). So what do you think Doha needs to make it a better city equivalent to your hometown or your favorite city in the world? There's are tons of new shopping avenues etc but what is missing (according to you)? I personally think I would love to see a few more bowling alley's and more night clubs/entertainment opportunities.

More parks - especially ones where EVERYONE is welcome and some should be built near the industrial area or labour camps - those guys have nothing.

Walmart, for one they have everything and at good prices, plus someone would end up posting pictures of what people wear walking around the store late at night... That would provide comic relief.

Doha needs more reasonable price of rent for house and villa!!!!

Doha needs more places for people to hang out in, other than shopping malls, like coffee shops or a place to sit in the Doha Seaport.

....sharkqatar, clarification, I wasn't making fun of you. I just read your post, and unconsciously slipped into a dream longing to be at those places you mentioned in your post.

Who doesn't want more greenery, blue skies, walking areas, coffee shops, international food, good weather, amusement parks, movie theaters, opera houses, sandy beaches, water sports, and a huge salary to pay for all that...:)

Have a great weekend.

Dear Sheikh Al-Thani,

Would you mind to buy a dozen of dolphin and put them on Corniche bay? so I can enjoy watching them playing around everytime I'm spending my time at Corncihe.

Don't forget to brought in specialist and water cooler to take care of them because these months the water is too hot at Corniche.

Would it be nice for you to have an enjoying moment whenever you start your job or leaving at afetrnoon by seeing those dolphin playing around on the water.

And I bet there no other GCC country have that kind of pet in front of the royal palace

Sincerely yours

Wishful dreamer

What about Giraffes?

By Xena• 2 Jul 2010 14:19

Something I wish Qatar didn't have was illegal pets... like Cheetahs, tigers and monkeys:-)

By qatarisun• 2 Jul 2010 14:12

there are monkeys here.. at least I saw couple of them in souq for sale, which is absolutely inhuman and against any common sense and against an international law regarding selling monkeys.. My buddy was going to get one, I refused to support the illegal trade..

By edifis• 2 Jul 2010 12:20

There are no monkeys too. I need some friends and desperate......!

I see many green Dates ripening in the palms trees. There are no giraffes to eat them.

So my conclusion is Doha lacks Giraffes.

britexpat, good point mate...while debating this, one must not overlook the fact that a large number of GCC cities have the same issues that Qatarisun pointed out so Doha is definitely not the lone transgressor here...

By britexpat• 2 Jul 2010 12:12

A bit harsh :O)

Many cities are like this. The main problem I have with GCC cities (apart from old Jeddah) is that they are bland and lifeless. They are just concrete jungles without life. They don't have ambience and life like say Damascus, Beirut, London, New York, Paris,Cairo, Toronto.

A lot of people in this town come from places that offer far less than this place offers anyway so they are of course more than content with what Doha has to offer & don't feel the need for anything more,so this is a relative question really, even for supposedly similar people...take for example Indians, many Indians here are from small towns/villages back home, for them,Doha is a very "advanced" city but for some others, like myself, who live in one of the Indian metros,Doha lacks a lot,DESPITE the fact that these guys have so much more financial ability, yet i have to hunt around town for even little things wheras back home,if one store doesn't have it,the next one definitely will & the guy will stock that particular item, even in small numbers simply because he knows the guy next dor doesn't have it,i suppose in this town where the same supply van goes to both stores, the question of a choice doesn't arise does it?...as qatarisun rightly pointed out,it's really in the little details,NOT the big picture, because that appears very rosy but scratch the surface & the issues lacking in this town come up very quickly...

everything is missing in Doha... Completely incomplete town. Starting with system, laws and regulations, ending with simple bottle openers which hard to find in here.. Services aren't existing, quality of everything total sucks.. but, human being is getting used to everything.. so am I... For the time being, Qatar is great! But most of my friends who have been here for more than 5-6 years are getting sick and tired of all this chaos, and slowly leaving for their original countries, one by one..

I'm happy to be here..DOHA is still same for me like how it was before 5yrs when i first landed here...lol..so i don't expect further changes here..

Khattak pointed out, what for me is THE most lacking in Qatar...smiling faces...seriously,look around you,on the street,in the malls,in the workplace, hardly anyone smiles in this town...& i believe that says A LOT about the place...also goes to show that millions in the bank & a big BMW to drive is no guarantee for happiness...

So what this place needs is more people smiling but for that,A LOT needs to change, don't where to begin on this one but you all know exactly what i'm referring to...

Aren't we in an Arabic country, why does everyone need to know English?

If anything we should all learn basic Arabic

Positive attitudes, deodorants, people who can at least speak basic english, cheaper real estate rents, cheaper spa services, good gyms, reasonable malls, reasonable flats/villas, no slavery, good salary, nice and respectable employers, inspiring work environment, no discrimination, no constipated drivers, etc etc etc...

like i don't like Champs elysee in Paris!!

I mean only corniche ,the Pearl, and souk wagif there is that kind...but nothing like open for everyone

For myself Champs elysee in Doha will be so NICE!!!
