A condom with teeth?

What do you think, will it work?

The condom with TEETH: South African doctor designs new female contraceptive to ward off would-be rapists

Rape-Axe is a condom for women with teeth-like hooks to deter would-be rapists

A new condom for women designed with teeth to ward off would-be rapists has been launched by a South African doctor.

Rape-aXe was dreamed up four decades ago by Dr Sonnet Ehlers when as a 20-year-old medical researcher, she met a devastated rape victim who was like 'a breathing corpse'.

In an interview with CNN, Ehlers told how the woman said: 'If only I had teeth down down there' said Ehlers. 'I promised her I'd do something to help people like her one day.'

True to her word, Rape-Axe has jagged teeth-like hooks that latch onto a man's penis during penetration.

Once its in place, it can only be removed by a doctor - a procedure Ehlers hopes will be done with authorities on standby to make an arrest.

'It hurts, he cannot pee and walk when it's on," she said. 'If he tries to remove it, it will clasp even tighter... however, it doesn't break the skin, and there's no danger of fluid exposure.'

30,000 of the female condoms are being distributed around the various South African citites where the World Cup football matches are taking place.

Ehlers said that she had taken the proper research and development steps before launching the product.

'I consulted engineers, gynecologists and psychologists to help in the design and make sure it was safe,' she said.

Once the trial period is over, they'll be available for about £1.50 each.

"The ideal situation would be for a woman to wear this when she's going out on some kind of blind date ... or to an area she's not comfortable with," Ehlers added.

However critics belive the female condom makes women vulnerable to more violence from men trapped by the device.

It's also a form of 'enslavement,' said Victoria Kajja, a fellow for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the east African country of Uganda.

'The fears surrounding the victim, the act of wearing the condom in anticipation of being assaulted all represent enslavement that no woman should be subjected to.'

South Africa has one of the highest rape rates in the world, according to Human Rights Watch.

A 2009 report by the nation's Medical Research Council found that 28 percent of men surveyed had raped a woman or girl, with one in 20 saying they had raped in the past year. It is also believed that 16 percent of the population is living with HIV.

Women take drastic measures to prevent rape in South Africa, Ehlers said, with some inserting razor blades in their private parts.

'I believe something's got to be done ... and this will make some men rethink before they assault a woman.'

I already told what is on my mind much earlier in this thread. Rather than thinking about how good or bad this device is, I am more disturbed by the fact that women feel the need to wear something like this to go outside.

I am a bit confused, on some threads people tell me, I have opinion on everything, you tell me, I have no real thought. This is confusing :-/

Ehlers said she sold her house and car to launch the project, and she planned to distribute 30,000 free devices under supervision during the World Cup period.

"I consulted engineers, gynecologists and psychologists to help in the design and make sure it was safe," she said.

After the trial period, they'll be available for about $2 a piece. She hopes the women will report back to her.

Olive - And I thought we are talking about men in SA one of 20 of whom say that they have raped someone. Not the same.

To answer your question - I don't find rape funny. I find people like this doctor funny. The desperation to earn money and fame can drive people to such extremes.

By Olive• 21 Jun 2010 14:07

By anonymous• 21 Jun 2010 14:06
anonymous

Nomerci - Thanks for clarifying that you are a woman. I was confused all this while. Seriously. Now I wouldn't argue about the reality part coz obviously I can only talk theoretically on the topic. If I can get a clarity on the actual design and the use part of it,maybe that will help me in getting the idea.

By nomerci• 21 Jun 2010 14:01

FU, that is your opinion, mine is , obviously, different. AND, I actually AM a woman.....you are, obviously, not.

Plus, I think any woman that actually has been raped or threatened with it, will agree that having this contraption is better than not having it.

We can talk about this theoretically, reality is a different story though.

By anonymous• 21 Jun 2010 13:55

They did try him Fu, he was acquitted. Money and power can buy you a lot of things, especially in a struggling African country. He's no role model for anyone. And I would hardly say this is useless. At the very least it will help catch rapist's.

By nomerci• 21 Jun 2010 13:50
nomerci

FU, as I mentioned before, this condom is not a solution, it is not meant to solve anything. As I understand it, it is meant to help a little in certain situations.

And looking at the history of that country, and not only the recent one, it seems rather obvious to me that planning ahead and estimating potential reactions and consequences, is not one of the strengths of the inhabitants. Any of them.

By anonymous• 21 Jun 2010 13:48
anonymous

Nomerci - Resorting to potentially useless means in the name of 'something is better' is not gonna solve anything. Raping babies and potential mates taking revenge are rooted in the mass illiteracy which needs to be tackled differently.

By nomerci• 21 Jun 2010 13:42
nomerci

I am with Olive here. Also, this is not a solution to prevent rape in general, I also do not think it is meant as that. It is a device that may help a little.

What has not been mentioned though is this...what about girls being upset with their potential ,chosen, mates using it as a means for revenge etc?

I mean in a country where some people believe raping babies is a means of curing HIV, anything can happen!

By anonymous• 21 Jun 2010 13:39

Olive - He should be made the role model to teach a lesson to the rest. President being a rapist in a rape infested country is the biggest opportunity for the judiciary to put an end to it. Forever.

3. Punish the criminals harshly and make it public.

Sadly, many don't realise the extent of rape and abuse that women suffer in Africa and many other developing regions. I went to a gathering recently in London which was focusing on rape in Congo, SA, Kenya and Darfur. Kenya has made great strides, but in other places a woman has a higher chance of being raped than learning how to read :O(

By Olive• 21 Jun 2010 12:21
Olive

Found the article again on CNN, and it goes a little bit more in depth. Basically this is to help CATCH rapists rather than prevent rape, as the men MUST go to a doctor to have it removed.

South Africa has one of the highest rape rates in the world, Human Rights Watch says on its website. A 2009 report by the nation's Medical Research Council found that 28 percent of men surveyed had raped a woman or girl, with one in 20 saying they had raped in the past year, according to Human Rights Watch.

In most African countries, rape convictions are not common. Affected women don't get immediate access to medical care, and DNA tests to provide evidence are unaffordable.

"Women and girls who experience these violations are denied justice, factors that contribute to the normalization of rape and violence in South African society," Human Rights Watch says.

Women take drastic measures to prevent rape in South Africa, Ehlers said, with some wearing extra tight biker shorts and others inserting razor blades wrapped in sponges in their private parts.

Critics have accused her of developing a medieval device to fight rape.

"Yes, my device may be a medieval, but it's for a medieval deed that has been around for decades," she said. "I believe something's got to be done ... and this will make some men rethink before they assault a woman."

A 2009 report by the nation's Medical Research Council found that 28 percent of men surveyed had raped a woman or girl, with one in 20 saying they had raped in the past year. It is also believed that 16 percent of the population is living with HIV.

FU everyone knows that at gun point, you can generally convince a girl to have sex with you, how many guys do you see carrying around guns or even knifes. As Olive said, If you are faced with a real desperate guy who has got enough time to first shove a carrot in and then wait to do the act then nothing is going to save you anyway.

Positive, the article is written to well, but no it doesn't stay stuck in the girl. And obviously there are ways around it, there are ways around everything, but for some unsuspecting dickwad, it will work.

I'm assuming the thing is no more uncomfortable for the woman to wear than a normal female condom, diyaphram or tampon. As for emotionally, the woman is already being raped, surely it would be worse if he could finish the job?

The rapists shaft isn't stuck in the woman, it's stuck in the condom, he's basically in so much pain though that he can't flee the scene, she however can.

By anonymous• 21 Jun 2010 10:54
anonymous

Olive - It's difficult to think clearly even while peeing but this contraption will make things worse for the women for two major reasons:

1. It would be uncomfortable for the women - Physically and Emotionally as drmana mentioned.

2. If a rapists shaft is stuck in there, he might as well kill the victim. He can't keep lying there waiting for the cops to get it out for him.

By Olive• 21 Jun 2010 10:51

Pain to whom?

IF there's multiple rapists FU, then it already is violent for the woman. This things doesn't promise to stop all types of rape, but in a one on one situation where the guy is un aware of the condom, it could help. You telling me you're going to be able to think clearly with teeth ripping into your shaft.

And as she said, there are women putting razor blades in their vagina to protect themselves, surely this is the better option.

Olive - I have doubts about the design itself.I know it would be something like a mousetrap but then it would be very uncomfortable for the women. Also, if it can be removed easily, then there's no stopping the rapist from removing it forcefully. Incase there are multiple rapists,it might turn more violent for the victim.

From what I've been told FU, most South Africans don't carry guns because it's more likely the weapon you carry will be used against you then used by you. And yes FU, well all women are targets of rape the black women in South Africa are more at risk, do to many factors. And I've never heard of a South African refer to the blacks as "locals", every South African I know refers to themselves as South African, regardless of skin colour. Perhaps you should check what kind of South Africans you're hanging out with.

Once the news is out with one or two men actually caught with it, others would be alert and remove it manually. After all, it can be manually removed while still inside female I suppose or else how would females themselves remove it. Hence, useless after sometime.

Olive - By 'locals' he meant the people other than whites. And probably they are perceived as locals eve today. The ones 'who are bigger targets of rape' don't exist. All women are potential targets.

The conversation above is to emphasize the importance of means, like guns, machhettes, knifes, pepper spray etc.which will actually act as deterrent and not act as 'making it difficult for the rapist'.

Arien - Thats where 'prevention is better' comes in. I guess the political situation, mass unemployement and crime go hand in hand at SA just like everywhere else. The cure should involve much more than measures like this 'invention'.

I just spoke to a friend here who is from SA and I asked him about this. His two sisters and a younger brother are in Jo'berg and this is what he says:

"You gotta be kidding me mate. My sisters carry guns and it does the trick. Most locals know that whites have guns and no one tries to hurt. The woman ( Doctor ) must have lost her mind"

If indeed it works(if proved effective in trials), how about reducing the price and make it available easily for everyone. Its single use one I think and price tag doesn't look much encouraging.

I doubt the validity of this story and/or the doctor in the first place. Second, this is just stupid....it'll never be something that will become mainstream in any country......stupid...

Olive - Small step would be better if it's in the right direction.

But these guys have a weak immune system, FU. Just kiss them and they'll die from the bacteria you transfer.

Sometimes women have to venture into dangerous places as a necessity, hell, they might live in a dangerous area. If the condom did permanent damage it would never be allowed on the market. Surely a small step is better than no step at all.

By Mehnis• 21 Jun 2010 09:56

As I said earlier this is a good thing for some situations. And if it is advertised as suggested by the article then it would help in preventing rapes for sometime. Not all rapists are going to debate about it like what we are doing here.

So the publicity that the rapist will get his organ confiscated and held inside is enough to make some think twice till such a time when there would be a failure of such a condom to prevent rape. So any step to prevent rape is a good step however functional it is.

By anonymous• 21 Jun 2010 09:55
anonymous

LP - Not necessarily. HIV Positive women still run the risk of getting rapped by HIV Positive Rapists.

By drmana• 21 Jun 2010 09:55
drmana

The question is whether is it any protection or not. Would the necessity of needing a doctor prevent potential rapist to back out? If women feel safe to venture out in dangerous areas thinking they are safe wearing it, then it is more dangerous. It would have been better to invent condom causing permanent damage. That could at least have caused actual decrease in rape.

By anonymous• 21 Jun 2010 09:52
anonymous

A sticker saying "HIV Positive" would also do, FU.

By Olive• 21 Jun 2010 09:49

Frankly drmana, if I were living in South Africa or other places with incredibly high rape rates I would have a fearful state of mind and I would use these things. I don't think we can put ourselves in the shoes of someone who lives in a country with the highest rape rate in the world and tell them they shouldn't do everything possible to protect themselves.

By anonymous• 21 Jun 2010 09:49
anonymous

It would be better if all the women intending to use this just put a tag on their back saying - "Beware! I'am wearing the Teeth Condom!"

That will be a bigger deterrent than this one. And rape can happen anally too. So does this doctor expect women to wear two of them?

By asif_khan• 21 Jun 2010 09:49

ok lets be serious

the best way to prevent abuse is to use ur knees on his groin bcoze rape doesnt mean only penetration but physical harm as well. women should do the following:-

learn self defense

pepper spray

sharp nails

and so on

By Ice Maiden• 21 Jun 2010 09:49

It's a silly idea...in case of violence against women, better to use a knife and get rid of the offending instrument altogether.

By drmana• 21 Jun 2010 09:47

Olive, what would be the state of mind of girl putting these condoms on. All fearful and terrified of everything. It should be traumatic to her just to put these on.

Also, putting these may give her false sense of security which would be so so wrong. It doesn't prevent rape just the penetration.

By Olive• 21 Jun 2010 09:44
Olive

In an ideal world drmana, they would have something to prevent all of that, but surely this is better than nothing and is a step in the right direction?

By anonymous• 21 Jun 2010 09:44

Mana - I agree with you 100%

But then doctors like this one need something to keep them busy and hopefully make them rich and famous.

By Mehnis• 21 Jun 2010 09:43

By drmana• 21 Jun 2010 09:42

If such is the situation, then condoms causing permanent damage would be better. If these guys are not afraid of committing rape, why would they be afraid of such toys. Sooner or later, they would find way around it.

Also, rape doesn't mean just penetration. How about the psychological trauma the lady goes through. Measures should be directed at preventing rape not preventing penetration.

soon im gonna invent a condom which will be the father of all condoms

Mehnis - Great men think alike ;)

By Mehnis• 21 Jun 2010 09:39

In the understanding of how this works on a base level seems to suggest that the condom probably contracts to tighten around the penetrated object.

So it has to be fixed to something inside to hold on. It has to be attached to the female body. If it is going to hurt the man then it will definitely hurt the woman inside too. And it could cause serious damage to tissues because of the force a man can project.

drmana - Sometimes it's inevitable. Women have to go to these places for sevveral reasons. Blind dates are meant to be exciting. These 'teeth' only increase the excitement IMO.

If a girl is scared of "going out on some kind of blind date ... or to an area she's not comfortable with"...she should go to these places at all. Thats the best solution. Wearing such condoms and going on blind date anticipating danger or going to dangerous area and then wearing these condoms looks kind of silly.

By anonymous• 21 Jun 2010 09:33

Mehnis - I thought as much. It would be difficult to fix and use and easy to remove IMO.

It should atleast deter some of the intending rapists but may not work with violence involved. A knife at the throat will ensure its removal.

Besides if the penetrated object cannot be removed then this condom has to be fixed rigidly inside. Not sure how this will work.

it may prevent the rape but any damaged to the rapist organ might also be a disaster to the victim. In the article, the item will prevent any skin damaged so no fluid can also transfer to the victim which might be a source for HIV. The doctor should be commended!

Well it is South Africa which has one of the highest rape rates in the world...and actually it doesn't stop rape, as the man does have to penetrate her to get "caught" however it does lessen the risk of her getting hurt & catching a disease. Frankly I think it's a good thing.

I dont this this will deter any rapists from raping...I actually think that as they get a thrill out of doing it it might actually increase it as having a sick mind they will look at it as a kind of dare - come on do it and see what happens...

not sure,.. I think I prefer a gun... :P

By anonymous• 21 Jun 2010 08:49

This is extreme and might not work if the rapists are aware or doubt that the woman might be using it. They might force the woman to remove it before they actually assault. However, some passionate criminals might become the victims.
