abhiash....according to ur profile, ur are between 18-25 old but ur son is going to study in the USA! are u fooling QL or deceiving urself?
At what age did u get married?
Monthly expenditures are going to vary a lot depending on if he will live in campus housing, so the housing is usually a part of the tuition, or in an apartment off campus, which could easily cost USD1000 per month or more in San Jose. Transportation is also a big consideration. If he lives on campus, he will have a better opportunity to meet other friends in his similar situation and they can plan things together so he may not need a car right away. San Jose does have a sort of public transportation system for commuters, but it's not fabulous. Will he eat out all the time or cook at home? Again, the school will be able to give you a sort of sample budget for incoming students.
After contacting the school and checking out some of the links I have suggested, if you have further questions, feel free to PM me. The weather, by the way, is great: not as hot as here, not very humid, doesn't get cold enough to snow, but he will need a light (not heavy) jacket. There is quite a large Indian community in that area as well, so that may help easy the culture shock for him a bit.
Is your son going to San Jose State University, by any chance? It's a great school and my home town is not far from there. If you are looking for affordable housing in and around the university, the school will have some housing options both on-campus and off-campus. Contact the housing office and ask them. Also try sfbay.craigslist.org (some of the listings there may be a bit pricey, and you will also have to check for South Bay listings rather than something in San Francisco). Check out the classified sections of the local papers, especially www.mercurynews.com and even try checking is some of the areas near San Jose, like the Fremont Argus newspaper www.insidebayarea.com/argus
I'm an American in Qatar and i'll try to answer your questions.
1. The university should be able to help your son with accommodation and settling in, once he's accepted as a fresher he can ask student affairs how to find accomodation on or off campus.
If he has never been in the U.S. for any long period of time before, I'll advise that he should really try to find accomodation on campus or in a building managed by the University, this will assist him into blending into the culture and school system witout too much difficulty.
2. The University can also advise on monthly expenditure, but noting that your son is going to university in California, I'll advise you to be prepared for expenses that are above the U.S. average.
3. I can't say for the University your son is going to but life in California is great, there is a high level of cultural diversity and the general populace is laid back, maybe too laid back for some people so it will be nice to advice your son to be friendly with everyone and blend in but at the same time he should watch his associations so he doesn't fall into bad company.
4. The university website should be able to help with more information for your son.
5. The weather in California is great, not as hot and dry as in can be in Qatar but close enough. Winter can sometimes get very cold but he shouldn't have any problem with the weather.
Glad to be of help.
As this is not DOHA and Qatar University
This is not a right place to ask this questions
You should look at web site and
ask that University

The school should be recommending housing for your son, either a dormitory or a set of materials about off-campus housing. E-mail and ask them at the Admissions Office. It's very expensive to live in San Jose and he will probably need a car. Go on www.weather.com and see what the average weather is for each month. It will be hot summers and cool winters.
