40 killed in bomb attack on Afghanistan wedding party

Up to 40 people were killed and more than 70 were injured in a “massive bomb” attack on a wedding party in the southern province of Kandahar, officials said Thursday.

The attack took place on late Wednesday in Kandahar’s Arghandab district, said Zalmai Ayoubi, spokesman for the provincial governor said. “Right now I can say that dozens of people were killed and injured in the blast.” “It was a suicide bomber that targeted the wedding party,” a senior police official in the province, who declined to be named, said.

“According to our information 39 people were killed and 73 others were injured in the attack,” the official said. The groom and several children were among those injured.

Another official, who also spoke on condition of anonymity, said the death toll could rise as the dead and injured were “rushed to different hospitals and a private clinic, we can not give an accurate number now.” No group took responsibility for the blast, which took place some 15 kilometres north of Kandahar city.

Kandahar, the spiritual home for Taliban militants and their leaders’ headquarters until late 2001, is set to be a scene for a major operation by NATO—led troops this summer.

Thousands of extra US troops are expected to join other NATO allied forces in the region in the coming months. The military escalation is aimed at driving the militants out of Kandahar and stemming the rise of the militants in the volatile region.

FU..is right

Former US National Security Advisor, Brezinski, boasted how he set the trap for the Russians to invade Afghanistan to give them their 'vietnam'...he asked rhetorically.."what is better? the end of the Soviet Union or a few hot headed Afghans?"

it is also a known fact the covert US operatives have denotated bombs in civilian areas and the western media then completes the deception by blaming a 'suicide bomber' i.e. those who oppose the western forces in their lands....

all of this is designed to delay the withdrawl of the troops and make these nations dependant on western security...

it helps when you have agents like Karzai and the like opening the doors for you and doing your bidding...

Yes, we created the mess. However, now we are making things worse. We have a puppet president in power and the warlords are still running the provinces and making oodles of money.

Our soldiers and innocent civilians are geting killed daily. Time to get out!

The kitchen floor is nice.

What's going on in Afghanistan is not war. It's America's Imprealistic Unholy Trade (AIUT) IMO.

USSR is totally innocent. It's only US which is doing all this.

This sounds a bit too gross even for Taliban. Wedding parties have been bombed by the US in the past because of prominent Taliban presence there and killed many women and children along. We still don't know who was getting married and who were present at this wedding. It sure looks targeted as in the past.

And Khandahar is a Taliban stronghold. Food for thought. It sure is easy to pass the blame on to Taliban but more evidence is required.

Where was that bomb made? And if no one has claimed responsibility so far;the bomber could have been funded by US to show to the world that Afghanistan still needs US. It's all about the arms trade.

US blew up their own twin towers. Bombed their own embassies worldwide. killed their own civilians and now they are bringing in their own terrorists globally and creating confusion. Oil.

Actually Muslims outnumber the Jews inside the US, but am well aware of the Zionist lobby inside the US administration. A report by Pew research found that 6 out 10 in the US think that Muslims are more subject to discrimination that other minorities, so I guess the gap is widening!

Majority of Muslims would like to see a more balanced decision making towards the ME issues, especially when it comes to the sensitive topic of Palestine. The consequences of the invasion of Iraq, Afghanistan and the issue of Iran nuclear ambition won't make the gap any smaller.

By Olive• 10 Jun 2010 09:25
Olive

LOL. I think you need to look at 2 things in the case of Israel. A) There are more Jews then Muslims in the US, and B) chastising Israel would make them look weak in the International community and inevitably lead to a full scale war here in the Gulf, which to your shock is not wanted by either the US or any of the Arab states either. Don't you think there's a reason the Arab states only ever make wishy washy statements against Israel but never actually do anything?

As for the current problems in Iraq & Afghanistan, that can only be blamed on the former president of the US & some other idiot named Osama Bin Laden. Sadly, they dug a hole so deep it's going to take the US decades to fill it.

Again, North Korea is a touchy situation due to the presence of South Korea. I lived a mere 16 km's from the North Korean boarder which is well within missile range. If North Korea let off even one missile into South Korea it could kill 100,000's of people due to the highly packed population. Also, in the past North Korea has been willing to back down in exchange for medicine and food. Now they seem to be getting more aggressive, so we'll see.

Olive please enlighten me with a better grasp! Why would the US veto every time for the favour of Israel and whenever there is a chance to invade a Muslim country or bomb it, Not a single UN resolution would stop them. I think some people are still wearing pink glasses. The US won't invade North Korea no matter how many torpedo or missile they launch.Do I smell oil again...

For those who keep referring to the division between the West and Muslims, please be more accurate: the actual division is between the Islamists and the rest of the world (which includes the west, east, north, south, Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, etc, etc, etc...).

Sag I think Muslims are doing a pretty damned good job of showing themselves as uncivilized, unstable, militant and senseless, they don't need the US's help. The US is not responsible for everything.

By Olive• 10 Jun 2010 09:12
Olive

You seem to have a very poor grasp of politics hamada. Just in case you hadn't noticed, North Korea is at war with South Korea, the US is only there at the invitation of South Korea. South Korea must decide if it wants to go to war with North Korea again, not the US. Sadly many South Koreans have family in North Korea and still dream of a unified Korea. War is not something they're liable to enter into lightly.

By deepb• 10 Jun 2010 09:12

Between the west and the Muslims ? So there are no Muslims in the west ? Or are you adopting Eco-savvy's stance of Muslims in non-muslim countries are not worthy of being called Muslims?

By sag• 10 Jun 2010 09:11

I think Hamada is right Olive, the more US tries to show muslims as uncivilised, unstable, militant and senseless people the more it will invite their anger. Just accept what they are and encourage and involve them in growth and development, constructive or destructive..

That would be a very relative definition, 3 decades ago, Taliban was an ally because they fought against the USSR, today they are the enemy.Suicide bombers usually are ignorant people. However some people are very biased and majority of Muslim population are aware of this, eventually it will all end in a big collision unless better bridges are built between the west and the Muslims' world.

By Olive• 10 Jun 2010 09:07
Olive

They are trying to disarm North Korea, hence the dozens of sanctions against them. They aren't willing to go in physically however because China will back North Korea & the civilian causalities in South Korea & Japan would be to high to contemplate at the moment. However if North Korea continues shooting Chinese soldiers and sinking South Korean ships I think you'll see an end to the armistice.

I recall a wedding bombing by the US in Iraq a few years back and I think each relative was compensated with 2500 $ for the lost relatives, what an expensive souls! What happened in Afghanistan isn't justified , but the US actions; like yesterday's voting against Iran Nuclear program doesn't help the cause, this will create more and more suicide bombers and extremists.Sooner or later Iran and other Arab countries will acquire Nukes and then the load won't balance again. Obviously the US is taking sides against the Muslims' world.
