Agree with Britex. Plus, with the new film out, the Prince of Persia, it would be sooo cool to keep the historical name "Persian Gulf" :0)

...Historically it's been called the Persian Gulf, but I'd like to be named the Arabian Gulf. The political world keeps changing.

While at it, I'd like to see countries names transliterated as opposed to loaned, translated, or simply tweaked for some odd reason.

before the arabic countries were formed much of the trade in this region was done by persia (now iran)and the ships mentioned it as the gulf of persia. civilization came first to persia and then to the arab world.

persian gulf is the orginal name and the name should remain..

Yes Gheed we know the arabs invaded lots of countries in the past and because of that they now speak arabic and are muslims, however I don't think you can apply that to persia. In fact the reverse was true. The Persians ruled Arab lands in the past.

@ britexpat is that how it was named? Either way, it's proper name is the 'Persian Gulf'.

I think it would be a good investment for Qatar to buy the name and change it to the 'Qatari Gulf'. In fact they should buy all titles to the oceans/seas and throw the word 'Qatar' behind the current names. This will bring more attention to Qatar than the 2022 World Cup bid.

Arab scholars up to the 1960s have also refered to the body of water as per its correct name "Kahleej-ol-Faris" (Persian Gulf) - see George Hourani (Arab Seafaring).

The "Arabian Gulf" actually referred to the present-day Red Sea in antiquity (i.e. Herodotus). The invention of "Arabian Gulf" with respect to its historically incorrect reference to the Persian Gulf was initiated by Sir Charles Belgrave (1920s) and Roderic Owen (1950s).

Note that the CBC has removed all references to "Arabian Gulf" and now correctly refers to the body of water as The Persian Gulf. This is the result of a contact made to Russ Germain (Broadcast Language advisor, CBC Radio Canada) almost 3 years ago. Mr. Germain recommended that all references to "Arabian Gulf" be removed from CBC broadcasts in favor of the legal and correct term, Persian Gulf
