plane crash in the Libyan capital, Tripoli
Up to 105 people have been killed in a plane crash in the Libyan capital, Tripoli.
Libya's Afriqiyah Airways said its Airbus-330 arriving from South Africa was coming in to land when it crashed on Wednesday morning.
"Afriqiyah Airways announce that our flight 8U771 had an accident during landing at Tripoli International airport," the airline said on its website.
"At this moment we have no information concerning possible casualties or survivors. Our information is that there were 93 passengers and 11 crew aboard."
Afriqiyah said "competent authorities are conducting the search and rescue mission".
A security official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said all passengers and crew members had been killed in the accident.
A source told Al Jazeera that an eight-year-old passenger had survived the crash.
There was no immediate indication of why the aircraft arriving from Johannesburg crashed.
Al Jazeera's Haru Mutasa, reporting from Johannesburg, said the plane was a "fairly new" Airbus.
"The airport in South Africa has not yet released details about the nationalities of the passengers," she said.
"People are still struggling to find out what actually happened."
Destiny....that child has still much more to see in life.
"All of the passengers and crew died except for one child," a Libyan security source told Reuters at Tripoli airport. "There were 93 passengers and 11 crew on board."
Libya's Transport Minister Mohamed Zidan said the 10-year-old child, who holds a Dutch passport, was in hospital.
Ice maiden.. Statistics still supports air travel to be the safest mode. 1 of 1.5 million is the possibility, where road is 1 of 400.
that more than a hundred people perished? You must be kidding! Only 93 + crew?
I feel sorry for the victim and their families.
But just look at who is flying the planes these days.
What is with all these planes crashing or having some mishap? Ageing planes , no maintenence?. Is flying no more the "safest way to travel"?
there is a survivor, an 8 year old boy i think. Good that it has only 93 pax + crew.
another one huh!!!!
A 330 operating with 93 pax??? the airline would go bankrupt soon:(
Sad news...may all the victims rest in peace.
it crashed. What they need to know is "what causes the crash?". The last sentence is weird!
