"Employees had been paid $3.5m too much in salaries and $1.5m in fees and benefits."

hmm, I wonder how no one noticed...

At least the State of Qatar will be getting it's money back.

College of the North Atlantic in Canada is a publicly-funded institution there. Of course the government is going to investigate some sort of financial discrepancy. As for the government over-stepping management, the head of of the college, Jean Madill, resigned because of such. She said that she was never given any control over what goes on in the college, and when something like this happens, all the responsibility falls on her.

As for the allegations of corruption, there is no missing money. All the money is accounted for. An error caused many employees of the college to be paid more than the Qatari government allotted to them. The Canadian and Newfoundland governments are the ones who have to pay it back.

I call bullshit on this report. It's almost obvious that someone in a high seat was funneling out cash and that this is just a cover story. Not a very uncommon story. The government should stop doling out bundles of cash to all these institutions blindly.

When Canadian govt directly interferes bypassing the CNAQ management for an amount in the vicinity of just $5mn cannot be believed. Unless there is something more rotten inside it.

don't know anything about this but when this that stop anyone having an opinion!

First to jump in were the conspiracy theorists, deliberate fraud etc. followed closely by the punishers, authorities should investigate etc. Yawn, Yawn! My first thought? someone thought it a good idea to increase salaries, promote deserving people etc., ran it by the concerned authorities and thought it was ok! But no formal approval was ever received. How often have friends here been convinced something good was happening here, everyone was agreed, but nothing happened. Witness removal of exit permits last year. All smoke and mirrors!

Corruption in any country is impossible without a local hand...........I think the story is incomplete and needs more investigation.

Error...........it's a foolish excuse and I don't buy it.This seemingly innocent error has much complicated story probably involving very influential people who can't be punished.

Corruption is a part of civilisation.Only in jungles there is no corruption (where there is no law to be broken). It always existed and will exist. The only alternative way of bypassing law is violence. Probably, that's why India is the one of the most corrupt country. The degree of corruption depends on severity of law enforcement.

where do I mention all westerners are corrupt? What I mentioned was when there is a westerners hand in corruption not when all westerners hand? Read properly before commenting.

Possible error right.

They were milking the Qatari govt, and everyone turned a blind eye to it. Someone must have notified the authorities resulting in the Canadian govt directly handling the case over riding the management.

IF it was just a case of some small overpayment would the Canadian govt step in?

How am i the racist stealth ??

What on earth has BAE got to do with this (your racism)?

Yes we know BAE are corrupt?

That is the point that it applies all around the world including your own country. If I apply your own strange methodology you're effectively stating that Indians in the ME are corrupt (which everyone here knows is pish )

You took a story about overpayment, possibly error, possibly deliberate and turned it into a generalisatation that westerners in the ME are all corrupt and that is assuming there was any corruption (no one has actually said there was ...unless you know something that the rest of Qatar doesn't know ? ). What will you be saying next ? That all Qataris don't look after their employees?

"little said the much better" - this says what ? That you can't argue a point? BTW - the phrase is “the less said, the better" just so you know next time you want to quote that.

the only racist point in my statement is to drawing attention to the obvious racist bias - yours ! or did you fail to read my post properly and fail to comprehend ?

Your inability to argue a point properly, that is so unfounded, so weak, so obviously bias.

Give up while you can... you lost.

Mistakes can take place anywhere, some are avoidable and some are not. the good news is:

1) the college confessed that there was a mistake instead of trying to hide it.

2) the college will pay back the state of Qatar.

3) any employee who was overpaid won't have to pay anything back, but rectification will take place for the future payrolls.

I don't think anyone is claiming corruption. Those who benefited had no part in the accounting.

well I maybe from a country which is worse in corruption. At the same time where you are from little said the much better.BAE is pretty well known for its dealings.

Drop the racism part. It shows in your statement as well.

"exactly when it comes to westerners hand in corruption in the ME, its nothing."

as opposed to asians, arabs or anyone etc ?

show me which nationality in the world doesn't have corruption and I will show a pig that can fly.

Jeez talk about racism

Aren't you from one of the world worst country for corruption?

mmyke said "much ado about nothing."

mmyke, you are so right. In one of your posts you said Muslims ruled Spain 'for a while'.. If 800-year is 'a while' to you then obviously US$3.5 million is 'nothing'. I think the employees who have been overpaid, should claim for damages done. Some made an issue for 'nothing'..
