Did anybody tried to attend athletics yesterday? Myself took two sons to Aspire and even though we had tickets, we were not able to enter since there were no seats available!? Us and around 150 people! What a shame! Anybody else had the same experience?
Couldn't agree more! Gulf Times wouldn't print my Letter to the Editor, of course. Boys and myself were very disappointed - man, we were looking forward to the event! World Cup 2022!? Yeah, right...
IMHO Niko is right actually - the micro management - in this case the the ability of the locals masquerading as "security/guides" is at best laughable and at worse down right dangerous - I seriously question their abiliity to deal with anything approaching a relatively minor public order issue - locals are best left to ordering coffees at Starbucks/Costa and insulting staff - putting them in positions of responsibility where they have a level of obligation for the safety and organisation of the general public isnt something that I support - they are simply not equipped to cope. The macro picture (see front page of yestedays Gulf Times) is as always "rosy".
Bottom line. the athletics was first class, the organisation was as usual unacceptable..... 2022 is a ludicrous pipe dream simply because the Qatari's do not get the micro correct and when it comes to staging major global events, the devil is in the detail.
I stood at the door witha ticket for 20 min on Sun at 4pm... and had enough of this bull shit that was happening at the door, so I turned and walked away. howerev on other day, I came and it was all good, no problem.
We've been trying to enter from 5.15 to 6.00 and we were told that there are no seats! At 6.00 I got fed up and we left. I had enough of security who has no basic manners and Qataris with big badges and radio hand-sets acting as if we all have to be grateful for being there! So much for organisation! You can't read about that in papers, of course. Reporters write about superb facilities and euphoria during event, bla, bla, bla...
I was one of the volunteer. Morning session it was always empty and even though the evening tickets were all sold out it was empty. only late evening the stadium became full on Sunday.
Didnt happen to me but I attended on Saturday afternoon and I understand how it happened. When we arrived on Sat afternoon early, the stadium was empty but the events were starting and the eyes of the world were on Doha - they were looking at an empty auditorium - outside the event were a crowd of about 50 people without tickets just queuing - they were let in en masse just to put bums on seats and give the impresion of a "fuller" stadium - I can understand the strategy from an organisers perspective. UNFORTUNATELY, the planning falls apart later on when those WITH tickets turn up only to find that there is no room at the inn!! Lesson learnt I think.
