Iran demands airlines call it "Persian Gulf"

How many airlines do you think will comply with this?

"Airlines must use the term 'Persian Gulf' rather than 'Arabian Gulf' to describe the body of water separating Iran from the Arabian Peninsula, or face a ban from Iranian airspace, according to Iran's transport minister.

"The airlines of the southern Persian Gulf countries flying to Iran are warned to use the term Persian Gulf on their electronic display boards," Hamid Behbahani, told Iranian press. "Otherwise they will be banned from Iranian airspace for a month the first time and upon repetition their aircraft will be grounded in Iran and flight permits to Iran will be revoked."

A Greek flight attendant has been the first to feel Iran's wrath over the naming confusion. Iran's Press TV reports:

The steward working for Kish Air had reportedly threatened to arrest passengers who complained against the use of the forged term 'Arabian Gulf' on the plane's in-flight monitors instead of the internationally-recognized term 'Persian Gulf.'
The state-funded television channel reports that the steward had his residency permit canceled due to his "inappropriate and irresponsible behavior."

The correct naming of the key waterway has long been a divisive issue between Iran and its Arabic neighbors.

AP reports that just last month the Saudi-based Islamic Solidarity Sports Federation said it canceled the Islamic Solidarity Games due to the Iranian host's use of the 'Persian Gulf' term.

In 2004, Iran banned American National Geographic for using Arabian Gulf instead of the Persian Gulf, eventually leading National Geographic to revise its practice. "

First, I think Iranians are stupid morons for this.

Second, Arabs are the same.

(Also, the rest of the world is not a bit better, or worse. We are all greedy, spoiled idiots, just like some kids taking another child's toy and crying "this is mine".)

Both are trying to keep the whole gulf for themselves, and to kick off "other side".

Yes, LeBaNeSeMaN, it is called "Arabian Gulf". But only in Arab countries. Before I came to Qatar I didn't know Arabs call it "Arabian Gulf". Most of the world call it "Persian Gulf", but not because of Iran.

Iranis are not entitled to make any requests about that out of their country. World is not connecting Iran and Persia. In the minds of most people of the world Iran is "new country", present, and Persia is "old country", history.

But, they can do whatever they want within their own air space. And only within their own. Noone has the right to stop them there. They crossed the line elsewhere, by saying that "upon repetition their aircraft will be grounded in Iran". Kick them off is your right, but keep them after permission to enter, that is too much.

Everywhere in the world permission to enter MUST include permission to leave as well. Including, but not limited to, aircrafts and other vehicles.

I will continue call it Persian Gulf, but it has nothing to do with Iran and never will.

and was dominating cuntry until Arabs dominated Iran.

Historically the Arabian Gulf is called Persian Gulf.

Here is a reference

I prefer this solution let us as Arab call it the Arabian Gulf and never call it the Persian Gulf and at the same time let the non Arab call it Persian Gulf if they want to stick to historical facts.

GodFather.

Considering that Bahrain/Qatar/UA are considered as part of ancient Persia by the Iranian, then it is right to call it Persian gulf.

It used to be called the Persian Gulf when Persia as opposed to Iran was a significant force in the region & the rest of the Gulf Arabs were still pearl diving, then came the discovery of oil, with that came the economic resources & the resultant power to call it the Arabian Gulf,Iran meanwhile had an Islamic revolution, fought a long drawn out war etc...so it's still an issue of argument but baldrick has a very good point...if they want people to call it Persian Gulf,Iran should revert to Persia, which of course they'll never do because that name is associated with the Shah...

Persian Gulf.

I remember being surprised that everyone didn't call it that..but then it made sense.

It's all basically a geographical pissing contest.

This debate on whether the waterway should be named the Arabian Gulf or the Persian Gulf has been going on for a long time.

...to adapt with the modern times. See? It sounds modern if we say Qatar is located in the Iranian Gulf. Agree or disagree? LOL

When I was in Iran they did totally look down their noses at the Arabs.

They were VERY rude about them seemed to despise them.

Actually, to avoid any political storm, Qatar Airways disables the in-flight airshow on flights to the Iranian sector, to avoid naming the gulf with either title.

Its better if they say lets have a war at one go rather than doing this and that to provoke the whole world against them.
