I'm male, and live in a house share with another male. A female friend from home has said she'd like to move out here to look for work. We have a spare room. Is she legally allowed to occupy it?

"So after the ceremony I can't even dance with my own wife?"
"No," answered the rabbi. "It's forbidden."
"Well, okay," says the man, "What about sex? Can we finally have sex?"
"Of course!" replies the rabbi. "Sex is a mitzvah a good thing within marriage, to have children!"
"What about different positions?" asks the man
"No problem," says the rabbi "It's a mitzvah!"
"Woman on top?" the man asks.
"Sure," says the rabbi. "Go for it! It's a mitzvah!"

@ skye, walking, talking, holding hands all ok,living together under one roof also ok,as long as you don't get busted, which btw,is the same in Dubai,i know 100% for a fact that it is illegal for an unmarried man & woman to live together in Dubai, that they enforce the rule or not is a whole different story, but on paper,it is illegal, same as here. Keep to yourselves, share the apartment with your partner only & NOT,5 of your girlfriends & 5 of your boyfriend's guy friends, don't bother the neighbours with all night karaoke sessions & you'll find that no one will bother you... Qatar is really not that different from Dubai in this respect.
If you stay in a well secured flat/villa compound without disturbing your neighbours it will not be any problem. But both of you together cant take a hotel room here in Qatar. The final intension is to F..k let them F.ck
I think the author has a fair idea now whether it is allowed or not. But he also needs to know whether they will get caught or not...the main determining factor is skin color, nationality and neighborhood.
If you are white and living alone in the house, mostly no one will interfere....they will think of her as your spouse (unless by the sheer look of it, it does not look possible in their eyes). If your neighbors are of Western nationality, usually the trait is not to interfere...ofcourse you can never say. I know so many couples that are living together and they dont get caught. Just dont be conspicious.
im really clueless about the rules and laws there in qatar..the only info i have is that Qatar is not as strict as Saudi but not as lax as Dubai..here in Dubai..nobody will ask for your marriage Cert even if you hold hands in public..or say..live together without legal docs...(well, would really end up in jail when you make love in broad daylight in Jumeirah Beach)..so..i just want to know if men and women are allowed to talk at least in public or hold hands..or even live together in one roof..well, if this is being ignorant..better il show my ignorance and ask rather than be a person who "knows it all" and suffer consequences afterwards..
@ skye, your ignorance is astounding, to say the least, live together,no one is going to come & ask for your marriage certificate, unless of course when you're away, your boyfriend has girlfriend # 2 coming over, that might raise a few eyebrows, but then wouldn't it anywhere else? This isn't Saudi, you can go wherever you want in public,as long as you reserve the "affection" for when you're @ home/indoors...what's the point you ask?...the point my dear,is the tax-free riyals that you or your boyfriend can't dream of earning...ANYWHERE ELSE ON THE PLANET,so please, quit trying to sound all "OMG!!",your boyfriend is coming here for the money, just like the rest of us but of course,to gain something, one must lose something, that is the way of the world...deal with it...
dont flaunt it that you have a wone there, it wil be ok,, most single western guys i know has a girl (or 2) living with them, but as stated if you are in a block with low lifes they wil put you in to the police, they are like a loyal lap dog to the police.. kill them all
My fiance has just accepted an offer in Qatar..He plans to be there by March..and hopefully, follow him soon..but if we cant be together..or even speak or see each other..whats the point..
@ qatarisun, would you give up on the "common in-law" term already???...seriously,who even uses that term anymore?...let me clarify one last time,I'M NOT IN ANY WAY SUPPORTING OR AGREEING WITH THE LAW,just stating very plainly & simply that by the law of this land,UNLESS A MAN & WOMAN are LEGALLY MARRIED & have the paperwork to prove it,it is illegal for them to share accomodation,as roomates or even as flatmates,i.e weather they sleep in the same room on the same bed or in separate rooms on separate beds,AS LONG AS THEY ARE UNDER THE SAME ROOF,IT'S ILLEGAL...there's absolutely nothing wrong in workmates sharing accomodation as long as each one has their own privacy, that's my view & yours,NOT the view of the powers that be of this country & this is their country so their rules apply, like it or not...there are LOADS of gay couples living-in with each other in this town but as whyteknight correctly pointed out,how does one prove they're a 'couple'???...IT IS NOT ILLEGAL for two guys or two women to share accomodation, share an apartment, even share a room & YES,even share a bed, there's no provision in the law of this country for same sex cohabitation simply because they don't accept it,it's "haram" & so there's no law for or against it,there is a law against two guys or two women actually getting "caught in the act" but like whyteknight said, are they going to snoop on each & every apartment in the country to check on that? exactly, they're not so it's actually easier for gay & lesbian couples to live together here, married or unmarried doesn't matter...the need of the hour, again as i stated earlier & whyteknight did as well,is affordable,secure,studios/1-beds for single women...
QS but how does one know whether the man and the woman are living as a couple or just room-mates. They can't peek into their bedrooms every night so they ban it altogether.
As for homosexual couples living together, well that's a bit of a dodgy one.. Again how does one know whether they are friends sharing together or a couple and Since as far as I know, they don't legally recognize homosexual couples then I don't expect them to make laws for or against homosexuals.
As I said before, they really should develop some affordable studio apartments if they are keen to maintain these existing laws.
but noone is talking about maintaining common-in-law relationship.. we are not talking about two individuals of opposit gender living together as husband and wife. we are talking about room mates... what's wrong in sharing accommodation, where each person has his/her own privacy?
and by the way, speakin of 'two individuals of opposit gender living as husband and wife'..
.. how about two individuals of the SAME gender sharing accommodation AND living as husband and wife? eh? it happens all the time in Qatar. Is that more acceptable (they ar the same gender!) than just sharing accommodation without any relation to each other? nonsense...

"What lies behind us and what lies before us are small compared to what lies within us."
Their culture doesn't allow males and females to live together without marriage. What's so hard to understand in that. Why are they living in stone ages if they are following their culture. Just aping western culture doesn't classify as being civilized.
As for single women not getting Visas.. I know so many single women working in Doha so they are apparently getting Visas, I think there is some issue though with that..
@ qatarisun, please don't think i agree with the current statusqou,it's absolutely ridiculous that in the civilized world we live in today, restrictions are imposed on members of the female sex simply because they're single, that just smacks of a small,narrow-minded,stuck in the stone ages attitude which is still very much on ample display here,so what else would you have me term them? moron seems pretty apt in my opinion...
@ AbuSaif,"she should not chose to go to the land which does not offer the comfort in her terms…." if a job is being offered there & the person is hired for the job, knowing that the person concerned is a single woman,it's upto the organization hiring her for the job & by extension the country in which the said organization is located to sort out these issues NOT the lady herself,or else they shouldn't have offered, interviewed & hired her in the first place right? What wer're seeing right now is the authorities allowing it simply because they don't have a choice,it's IMPOSSIBLE for any nation/city to truly grow with a bias toward either gender,be it male or female,so they're reluctantly allowing it but making no provisions whatsoever for these single ladies simply because they don't want to address the issue or be seen as the "infidel" who's concerned about the welfare of single women employees...& this may be the way things are here but it's changing for sure & it's changing fast 'cos like i said, they don't have a choice in the matter or they can choose to be in global obscurity despite having all the money in the world like the country next door to us...
@ Oryx, many different solutions can be discussed but the simplest one is that she should not chose to go to the land which does not offer the comfort in her terms…. The world is very big…..
@ QS; Incidentally this is the way the things are at least in this part of the world, you and I can’t do much about it…..right…. However, what we can do is NOT to choose the land which does not offer comfort zone.
AbuSaif, what are you talking about? "she should be allowed to move with her family"... First, why it's again about "woman allowed" or "woman not allowed"??
It has nothing to do with allowing a woman to move with her family... Why on the earth let's say girl's brother would move with her to Doha, since she is the one who got an offer?? Or how on the earth the girl's elderly father could help her with bearing the rent fees?? what a nonsense..
the solution is simple: either provide expats population with affordable accommodation, or stop implementing the laws which are impossible to follow..

And what if the single female concerned has no male family members????
I am not a child - I am not demented (yet!) I dont need supervision. If the Qatari government deemed me good for employment then I can sure look after myself.
@ whyteknight,i'm referring to the concerned authorities suspicious nature towards young/middle-aged single women in general & i have personally faced this issue on more than one occasion when attempting to get a visa for my sister to come visit me from Dubai. She's a senior account director with a leading ad agency there but she's or rather she was then, young & single. I personally spoke to the captain on duty who was known to a colleague of mine & he actually advised me that it would be difficult as the highest visa rejections were for people in my sister's category i.e female, young/middle aged & single, there's a term for that,it's called straight from the horse's mouth & as with everyone,my opinion is based largely on personal experience...i don't give a rat's behind what the "real" taliban is like & have no interest in that "rude awakening" as it's not going to affect my life in any way,for me,discrimination against women simply because they're young & single is talibanization, that's my opinion & i'm entitled to it...just like you are to your mate...live & let live, there's another expression to ponder...btw,i'm not & never claimed to be competing for the booker or any other literary award here,as i'm sure the rest of us aren't...i write the way i think, stream of thought,it may be not be grammatically correct but hey, there's are MANY worse examples of incorrect spelling & grammar on this site than my posts mate, surely you agree to that? so if you are really on mission correction, you ought to start with the worst & work your way up to me eh?! *wink*!!...
Looking at a broader perspective, if I consider Doha as my home and the Villas as the rooms to live in, then I too am living in a mixed sex accomodation
Like one cannot clap with a single hand, likewise I think most of the time loss is of both parties but it is the matter of understanding....general perception is that the loss is financial but this loss is one of the loss one can face….you know what I mean
If I have a say at all, I would like to see proper single female accommodations which is nothing from out of earth, as QA and most of the hotel do have such secured service apartments should there be a need of a single female.
However ideally if a single female is required to come all alone then she should be allowed to move with her family or a member of family which is called a Mahram (islamically). After all, the issue of legal or illegal is due to the religious values.
gadarene I think you need to change your mindset first. Every single girl is NOT considered a "working girl" here, If you think this town is "Talibanized" then it's going to be a really rude awakening for you when you come across the real "Taliban".
By the way you know there is a punctuation mark ".", known as full stop. You should use it once in a while.
I must ask: qatarisun commented that it is illegal to live as husband and wife. Is this the law or is it any men and women living as roommates? There is a big difference, though neither is the business of the government.
@ qatarisun, don't think you're seeing my point here luv!...i fully agree that the authorities should do something about it but in this "family oriented" town where every single lady is considered a "working girl" by these morons, the 1st thing that needs to change is their attitude along with the acceptance that they can't "talibanize" this town & still expect to be accepted as a "world capital" which is their ultimate aim, they're getting there but it's going to take a while, make no mistake,i think the situation is deplorable & is indicative of a mindset stuck in the dark ages BUT,(you said,i quote) "It is absolutely legal to share accommodation as room mates. When I first came to Qatar, my first company (pretty big, famous and very "legal" company) accommodated me at their villa for couple of weeks till we founda permanent accommodation. I was the only female in this villa, sharing it with 3 guys..." & the above statement is "absolutely" untrue,it is illegal, the fact that your company(& loads of other companies in this town) did it is besides the point, from a legal standpoint,IT IS ILLEGAL & yes i fully agree they ought to come up with a solution before coming with the law but that's just the way it is...& yes you're right about the pedestrian crossigs as well,of which there are none in this town but jaywalking isn't illegal...yet *wink*!!
But expats tend to twist this law because it will be very difficult to get busted (of course in addition to High proced accomodation, scarcity of single bedroom flats and studios in Doha,...) Its the same as if your bf/gf comes to visit you. Will that be legal or illegal?
Great, so no nonresident single lady should be hired by any company and the work visa should also not be issued from today.............until the law accommodates such mixed accommodations should it be necessary.......Or Until the right type of accommodation is in place..
Now the question is what should be done of the existing ones with the problem of no accommodation?
If any male wanted to accomodate a single female in his room or next room (why he cant invite same male?) then he should have bad intension. Unless there is no complaint or you dont catch by labour checking it wont be a problem. It can be dangerious a gas container and a match box next to it, so be careful.
first, relax, no need to exhaust such hot emotions.. :)
second, any solution to this matter?
Look in the other thread, western man cannot find sharing accommodation.. for western female it's even harder!!! I would say chances are next to zero.. so as i said, until this bad situation with accommodation is existing in Qatar, it is unethical to demand following some mythical law, which is impossible to observe..
..You can not force pedestrians to cross the road only at pedestrian crossings, and do not build these pedestrian crossings! It is nonsense.. First you have to build them, then to implement the law..
*********************
"What lies behind us and what lies before us are small compared to what lies within us."
Not trying to hijack the thread but we know over speeding and tailgating is illegal and most of the offenders go un noticed due to many factors (influence, status, identity etc) but the crime is crime and that should not be legitimized by the authorities due to the common existence of such wrong practices.
Secondly, If I am to advise someone, I won’t advise to break the traffic regulation because it MIGHT be unnoticed etc.
Hope this makes it more understanding on why most of the guys are advising for a NO.
Now coming to another issue that why this is not legal in Qatar and is legal elsewhere is totally another subject to discuss in length where the culture will pop in and the reason of that cultural practice will bring in the faith/religion etc. Not to mention bashing will also dip in etc….that, should it require a change, I don’t think will happen the timeframe our friend Nagrua can wait :-)
@ qatarisun, your big,"famous"(are they rockstars?) & very legal company housed you in that villa EXACTLY for that reason, being the above 3 adjectives you used, the company sponsor is obviously either a) a prominent member of the royal family or b) a prominent member of one of the leading families in the country or c)a HUGE global corporation's(lemme guess, oil & gas?)Qatar office,so NOBODY is going to come barging into that villa & haul your ass to jail, absolutely spot on about that,BUT i state again,as per the law of this land,IT IS ILLEGAL,in-law or outlaws notwithstanding, for an unrelated male & female to share accomodation & by this i mean, share a roof NOT in the same building, but then again, how many big, famous & very legal companies flout/bend/stretch or downright break the law in this country?...i'd say ALL of them,in some way or the other, been here the past 18 years luv, think i might know slightly more about the law than you do eh?! *wink*!!
gadarene ... my friend... it is illegal to live together as husband and wife, i.e. being in common-in-law relationship. It is absolutely legal to share accommodation as room mates.
When I first came to Qatar, my first company (pretty big, famous and very "legal" company) accommodated me at their villa for couple of weeks till we founda permanent accommodation. I was the only female in this villa, sharing it with 3 guys...

"What lies behind us and what lies before us are small compared to what lies within us."
@ eagleemanuel,i beg to differ mate...a "protective" measure as you put it would be building small, affordable studios with security for single women, with a laundromat in the basement & a small store on the ground floor so they don't need to step out after hours, like i mentioned in my earlier post, the current situation is just a lack of vision & a general taboo attitude toward single women in this town...
I can't understand why the state must get involved in things like this. people do the best they can. Who could afford the prices in Doha. higher than London, for simple accommodation needs until recently. My Qatari landlord boasted that he had stopped an agent for dividing his house between two Indian families on "moral grounds" A year later he was happy to have 14 Philipinos living in the same house! These were married, related and unrelated people who caused no trouble for their neighbours over my two years. Money talks!
illegal in the State of Qatar for unmarried/unrelated men & women to live together in the same house/apartment..."
This is protective and not an archaic restriction. Although quite impractical but people just have to find a way - as suggested - rent with other girls if need to save money.
"It's hard to find to accommodation for single women for the simple reason that this country doesn't encourage it"
hey champ... am no prophet to invite and do good or demon to follow or do evil.. just simple man... following one principle, that every action has an equal reaction.. ;) so all set...
should i call you the saviour.. by the way i did not decide your destination, i thought ours is the same coz wherever i go i see you following me... should i post the link where else i knit the thread...
@ qatarisun, the problem my friend is that it is illegal in the State of Qatar for unmarried/unrelated men & women to live together in the same house/apartment...are a lot of people doing it? absolutely, but that doesn't make it legal now does it?...It's hard to find to accomodation for single women for the simple reason that this country doesn't encourage it,there are PLENTY of brand new vacant apartment buildings all over the city but is anyone building small, affordable studios with security specifically for single women? no they're not & that my friend is why people have to resort to illegal means & risk their jobs & livelihood every day, they don't do it out of choice, this country doesn't offer them any other option...
@ nagrua, you're not in kansas anymore mate...is your friend staying with you worth risking your job & being deported?...i thought not...
know lot of people of the opposite gender sharing accommodation... what's the problem? like if there is a choice... I understand is thousands units were available in different areas, for affordable prices.. but since qatar cannot provide a normal level of affordable houses, no point to demand to follow certain rules.. do you know how hard to find a house for let's say single western female? Next to impossible! All are either "for males", or for "indians", or for "filipinos".. so what this western lady should do? if she for example cannot afford or simly doesn't want to pay a fortune for little miserable independent cage?? when at the same time she can find nice room in sharing with males villa for half price? eh?

Big trouble as in maybe lose your/her job and get deported. Hopefully, no lashes. Maybe can plead for leniency but then again, ignorance of the law is no defense generally.
Rentals have / are coming down. Better to stay on her own or find other female friends to share accommodation with.

Just dont get caught..is that it?..still give me the creeps..are they allowed, male and female to be seen together in public?
dont flaunt it that you have a wone there, it wil be ok,, most single western guys i know has a girl (or 2) living with them, but as stated if you are in a block with low lifes they wil put you in to the police, they are like a loyal lap dog to the police.. kill them all
My fiance has just accepted an offer in Qatar..He plans to be there by March..and hopefully, follow him soon..but if we cant be together..or even speak or see each other..whats the point..
This is upsetting. I was going to move with my boyfriend. We will have to live apart!
So, deportation is the penalty?
This is ridiculous. I agree with qatarisun. Men and women, as adults, should be able to live as they like. It is no business of the government.
well i dont think there is a problem in it..

Nothing ..........
What if they are row houses? Its the same roof:)
"Ali Baba and 40 thieves" are now "Ali Baba and 30 thieves" ; 10 were laid off.
What will happen to someone who is caught in this kind of living situation?
i dont see any argument in this.... you are all right. so whats the point. do it if you want to - do not do it if you are afraid.
**** Aal Izz Well****
but noone is talking about maintaining common-in-law relationship.. we are not talking about two individuals of opposit gender living together as husband and wife. we are talking about room mates... what's wrong in sharing accommodation, where each person has his/her own privacy?
and by the way, speakin of 'two individuals of opposit gender living as husband and wife'..
.. how about two individuals of the SAME gender sharing accommodation AND living as husband and wife? eh? it happens all the time in Qatar. Is that more acceptable (they ar the same gender!) than just sharing accommodation without any relation to each other? nonsense...

**** Aal Izz Well****
make her stay with ya and be ready to go back.........''HOME SOO SWEET HOME''
Sex accomodation what you mean?
Peace
If they can develop some studio apartments, it really would be appreciated.
**** Aal Izz Well****
AbuSaif, what are you talking about? "she should be allowed to move with her family"... First, why it's again about "woman allowed" or "woman not allowed"??
It has nothing to do with allowing a woman to move with her family... Why on the earth let's say girl's brother would move with her to Doha, since she is the one who got an offer?? Or how on the earth the girl's elderly father could help her with bearing the rent fees?? what a nonsense..
the solution is simple: either provide expats population with affordable accommodation, or stop implementing the laws which are impossible to follow..

Oryx you tuck that away.. I don’t think you are going to need that in this town unless ofcourse you want to wear it... :)

And what if the single female concerned has no male family members????
I am not a child - I am not demented (yet!) I dont need supervision. If the Qatari government deemed me good for employment then I can sure look after myself.

and why 'MORONS'??

I have a burka in my cupboard.... let me know when the Taliban ride into town so I am wearing the correct clothes!
Even monkeys have the right to live with whoever they want.
Just a thought, no offense…
Peace to all
Phew! Anybody who considers me a "working girl" will get a punch in the nose!

gadarene I think you need to change your mindset first. Every single girl is NOT considered a "working girl" here, If you think this town is "Talibanized" then it's going to be a really rude awakening for you when you come across the real "Taliban".
By the way you know there is a punctuation mark ".", known as full stop. You should use it once in a while.

no comment....
Biju gas Cylinder, match box????
What an example... Absolutely Amazing...
**** Aal Izz Well****
Its illegal
But expats tend to twist this law because it will be very difficult to get busted (of course in addition to High proced accomodation, scarcity of single bedroom flats and studios in Doha,...) Its the same as if your bf/gf comes to visit you. Will that be legal or illegal?
AbuSaif, lol.. so who do you think will lose in your case scenario??
*********************
"What lies behind us and what lies before us are small compared to what lies within us."

You have solved the riddle

Peace to all
@ qatarisun, your big,"famous"(are they rockstars?) & very legal company housed you in that villa EXACTLY for that reason, being the above 3 adjectives you used, the company sponsor is obviously either a) a prominent member of the royal family or b) a prominent member of one of the leading families in the country or c)a HUGE global corporation's(lemme guess, oil & gas?)Qatar office,so NOBODY is going to come barging into that villa & haul your ass to jail, absolutely spot on about that,BUT i state again,as per the law of this land,IT IS ILLEGAL,in-law or outlaws notwithstanding, for an unrelated male & female to share accomodation & by this i mean, share a roof NOT in the same building, but then again, how many big, famous & very legal companies flout/bend/stretch or downright break the law in this country?...i'd say ALL of them,in some way or the other, been here the past 18 years luv, think i might know slightly more about the law than you do eh?! *wink*!!
Its legal as long as you dont make a show of it or cause concerns to the neighbours...
As long as you are on a low profile there shouldnt be any problem...
because it's not breaking a law.. guys didn't expose any attempts to maintain with me common-in-law relationships..:)

gadarene ... my friend... it is illegal to live together as husband and wife, i.e. being in common-in-law relationship. It is absolutely legal to share accommodation as room mates.
When I first came to Qatar, my first company (pretty big, famous and very "legal" company) accommodated me at their villa for couple of weeks till we founda permanent accommodation. I was the only female in this villa, sharing it with 3 guys...

Legally not at all, of course not following legality has a price, some of it is mentioned/indicated by the blokes above.
Choice is yours mate!!!
Hypocrits all together.
"It's hard to find to accommodation for single women for the simple reason that this country doesn't encourage it"
Yes, also for protective reasons.
