آمریکا/Amreeka (2009 - US/Palestine)
Stars: Nisreen Faour, Hiam Abbass, Melkar Muallem, etc.
Directed by Cherien Nabis
(In English and Arabic language with English translations)
At around 2005, a Palestinian mother and son was surprised to know that they won the green card lottery. They took advantage of it and migrate to Chicago to her sister and her husband and kids. This is going to be a brand new start of living for them...but not while facing the issues mistakenly treated in their new country at the height of the Iraqi war.
Nicely done and cute movie gives us somewhat a view of the encounters one's choice has to make when we were given the chance to have a residence visa in the United States, added with the conflicts facing both their identity crises on Israel/Palestine issues (crossing borders everyday just to visit her mom) and post-9/11 (her sister's husband losing clients for thinking he was 'Iraqi') gives us a perspective of the everyday stuff that goes around as a new immigrant in the said land of milk and honey (language problems, airport security issues, starting to work at a fastfood chain sacrificing her bookkeeping practices, her sister's dilemma for feeling homesick for 15 years, etc.).
Hiam Abbas may be a Star, but in this movie I think Nisreen Faour(Muna Farah) seized the centerstage!
She played her part beautifully!
Excellent Movie.....& I loved it!
