Relocating

Hi there,
I am thinking of taking a position in Qatar & relocating from Canada with my 13 year old son.

What is it like for women in Qatar? Are there any rules ie clothing, bathing suits etc?

What are the schools like?

Any dirtjumping facilities (mountain biking)?
We Ski/snowboard & mountain bike...what are the sports/activities in Qatar.

Thanks,
C

Clothing - recommended conservative (cover your knees and your elbows no cleavage). At hotel pools and beaches you can pretty much wear what you would in Canada although I imagine a thong would get you a whisper to cease and desist fairly quickly. On public beaches, I've seen two piece suits but they were always accompanied by a male companion in order to ward off the oglers (and they number many and cruise the beaches in their Land Cruisers to get a look at girls in various states of undress). Also, at some beaches there are numbers of labourers (especially on Fridays) and they will squat down and just look - which is annoying and often slightly frightening.

I would suspect that you'd be able to engage in off road biking - there aren't any mountains in Qatar and not many really hilly places except sand dunes.

Lots of football(soccer), rugby, ice hockey, cricket, basketball, volleyball, martial arts, etc. One of the big problems is that for much of the year it's too hot to "play outside" for very long 40+C 4-6 months of the year.
