I need an honest opinion,pls!
Do you advocate the advertising of one's personal life on social networking sites?
I mean,I have been getting particularly bothered about the hundreds of photographs being put up by my friends and my sister's friends on sites like Facebook,MySpace and elsewhere. It's like they're putting up their life on an international showcase!
I remember the days when we used to enjoy seeing family photographs in precious albums at home.Just the other day,I had a friend of mine calling up and saying "Hey!I've uploaded my honeymoon pics on FB...check em out when you time,yeah?".....and I was like "Honeymoon pics???What the....!!!"
Isn't privacy an issue anymore?Or is it just only me who thinks so :-/

oh, how much i agree with steve! I am obsessed with my private space.. I never liked FB. Now I joint there just because most of my QL friends shifted there from QL. I have only 4-5 pic in my profile, and I accept as friends only people that I know personally, not through my network..
and anyway, when I am on FB, I spend most of the time on my FarmVille...
I am sick about my privacy, and no way would let anyone that I don't know, get too close to me, into my personal space..

as long us the pictures that is being posted on FB,FS etc.... are not offensive i guess its ok.
because you can still limit like use the privacy option if you dnt want to share with other people. limit the access
Thank you and Best wishes

well,it depend what types of picture your friend uploading to Fb.If it is X rated dont share it and keep it secretly.maybe you can advise your friend, and he/she dosnt knew about it.
ok Pitstop will do tonight... :)
mjamille28, look me up in the QLVG group and add me :)
Ahhhh okei so it's the stalking that scares you...mhhh boh.
The stalking can happen to anyone IMHO, regardless of what you post.
It just has to be managed and discouraged in the right way.
I'm just trying to say that not crossing the road will prevent you from getting hit by a car, but you won't see how beautiful is the other side.
OMG....amen to what Mark Twain said..."two things are infinite:The Universe and human stupidity;and i'm not sure about the former" :-D LOL

Old photos. Brings back memories. I recall a guy at work bringing in photos of his newborn son..... They were photos taken during the birthing process :O(
i guess an attractive pic or two is more inviting for stalkers than a few witty comments.

i don't know.maybe they just don't know or they are just refusing to accept that cyberspace can get malicious.coz it's like the most 'in' thing to do these days...posting pics and showing off to ppl what u did in every nanosecond of ur life!somebody is not on facebook or someplace like that and ppl look at him/her like it's a sacrilege!
Going to church no more makes you a Christian than standing in a garage makes you a car. ~ Garrison Keillor
If you want to socialize just with your opinions, I think a forum is OK.
the cyberworld out there isn't all that harmless, but not posting pics of you is not indicative of being safe from it.
Svelte: maybe you need new friends if they cannot simply understand you don't want your private life broadcast online.
Seriously, why are they giving you such a hard time about it?
one of my ex-classmate's 'About me' reads...'I have joined this site just to get back in touch with old friends.I do not intend to use this site for anything else.Anybody who is wishing to start a new friendship with me,please understand that I am not interested. If you add me even after reading my warning,I will have to 'Report Abuse'.So strangers, kindly refrain from adding me'
LOL :-D

I am against Facebook. It is all too easy to "lose" one's privacy.
There is a conspiracy theory that such sites are the brainchild of the CIA, since they make people divulge private information and relationships.
no more secrets nowadays!
u can say that again...."better safe than sorry" indeed....wish everybody shared ur views
Going to church no more makes you a Christian than standing in a garage makes you a car. ~ Garrison Keillor
After reading all this svelte I am not sure if I want pics of my self and family on social accounts . I always assumed that these sites have good security systems. I guess its better safe then sorry.
but can't socializing be restrictive to a certain degree at least?the cyberworld out there isn't all that harmless,y'see.and the scenario is a tad more dangerous for women than how it is for men.
Going to church no more makes you a Christian than standing in a garage makes you a car. ~ Garrison Keillor
I got your point svelte.
But...(in my humble opinion)...if you subscribe social network, you are supposed to socialize.
Of course this can be achieved in a number of ways. One of these is posting pieces of your life.
I remember once I posted a video of a friend of mine, and she got a little bit upset because she was not happy to be seen doing strange things by all my friends. And I fully agreed, it was my mistake. So I removed it.
these so-called 'personal revenges' usually stem from petty issues,FS....like minor arguments on community discussions, for instance.there are so many ppl out there who cannot bear losing an argument and they'd go to any cheap levels to give themselves a feeling of victory by "teaching the other person a lesson"...i,for one, have completely quit arguing on such communities.like i said earlier, now it's only QL where i voice my opinions freely.
Going to church no more makes you a Christian than standing in a garage makes you a car. ~ Garrison Keillor
risk dont hi hack this thread...
I did read the link....I do agree that there are sick people on net...but most of these incidents are bcos of personal revenge/problems with each other...what would they gain from doin this to a random person??
i dont know Maggi, who this bloody guy is ? :(
and what is rizks' avatar doing there?? :-o rizks....!!!come here fast!
Going to church no more makes you a Christian than standing in a garage makes you a car. ~ Garrison Keillor
maurochiado...but social networking sites do not make it mandatory to post personal pics,do they?they permit it for their site to gain popularity.anyway people are always too inquisitive to know what's going on in others' lives rather than mind their own business.the other day one of my friends asked me why i'm not uploading pics of me and my hubby.i told her that this profile is entirely MINE and i don't see the significance of pasting my brand-new hubby's pics all over the place....if she'd asked me my pics,i would have emailed them to her.but NO...she wants me to 'upload' them!wth?she tells me she feels something is "not right" when ppl don't post their couple pics....duh!!!! x-(
poorman....d'you need a pillow to bite?u seem to be laughing on all the threads.or i suggest u stick to the 'Funnies' section and laugh to ur hearts' content.we're not talking anything funny here.
Going to church no more makes you a Christian than standing in a garage makes you a car. ~ Garrison Keillor
from the last thread i saw..u have the same dialogue???? :-/
temper is something u cant get rid of... by loosing it...
You can see the matter from many points of view. On Facebook for example I often see pics of my friends, even if these pics were not uploaded by them they have just been tagged in them.
In this case, if I were tagged, I would be bothered if some of my privacy would be lost.
But If I am the one who posts pics of myself, I don't see the point. When you subscribe Facebook os social networks you are accepting in the first place to share some of your privacy with others, especially people you never met and you never will.
yeah..& be sure to discuss with people who are broad minded... ;-)
temper is something u cant get rid of... by loosing it...
i sure hope not!and now i have to be extra careful not to pick up fights with any of them online...lest somebody decides to "teach me a lesson",y'see :-P earlier i used to very active in community discussion boards and have picked up serious fights during discussions.not any more.i stay out of community discussions in totality.QL is about the only place now that i speak freely.
Going to church no more makes you a Christian than standing in a garage makes you a car. ~ Garrison Keillor
i don't open their albums nowadays coz it disturbs me.and not all people are sensible not to put potentially dangerous pics.like my sis showed me pics of one of her ex-classmates' err...not so nice pics with her boyfriend.my eyes almost popped out!these children don't seem to know anything about cyber safety!
btw,did u click on the link i asked astrogirl to see....i feel u ought to take a look.
Going to church no more makes you a Christian than standing in a garage makes you a car. ~ Garrison Keillor
got that point.. it is the choice & risk of the user... when u post it in the internet, then its not private..thats it... so maybe u dont have anybody in ur friendslist who would try to use ur photos right..? LOL... ;-)
temper is something u cant get rid of... by loosing it...
i'm not....and that's why it bothers me so much.i'm sure celebrities wouldn't care a hoot who clicks their pics or who does what with them!but ordinary people like me do value privacy a lot.
Going to church no more makes you a Christian than standing in a garage makes you a car. ~ Garrison Keillor
I agree with colt45 comments ... colt good to know that you are still alive:)
If someone dont like to put their pics..don’t put... but those who want to sahre it with their friends let them do..simple as that…how can it bother you?? you don’t have to open their album if you dont want to see..
Nowadays people dont have time to visit ones place and see the album... so its easier to share it this way...
What can one do by hacking your pics? anywayz we will put only pics that are viewable by our friends not the intimate ones ..
Some people are conscious about others seeing their pics...some are happy to show it to others..
FU sad that you don’t have an account…lol
he he!it's like how many of my friends had a problem after they knew that my husband is not on my friends' lists :-P they looked at me as if the very fact is a crime!okay,he was there until our engagement.after that he cased to be a friend...so how can his place be in my friends' list?hmm? :-D LOL
Going to church no more makes you a Christian than standing in a garage makes you a car. ~ Garrison Keillor
I think you'd be paraeffinnoid if you were a celebrity...!!! :-D
i was least bothered about this issue until a couple of years ago when i was walking through this really popular mall and i heard somebody tell "hey isn't that ........?i have seen her in .......'s orkut pics"....damn!i was thoroughly creeped out that day!i care about my privacy and do not appreciate it if strangers were to recognise me on the street.period.
and about thinking that "it's just a photograph"....do visit this link.it's self explanatory http://www.indianexpress.com/news/man-held-for-morphing-web-images/550134/

I know right... with wired teeth and big spectacles... :-P... but yeah back in the day, i have seen Sridevi's face pic on Samantha Fox's body... how cool was that?... or hot???
svelte
i choose carefully my FB friends, some are very close friends of mine in reality, yet i didn't accept their invitation on FB.
now on the photos issue, the most i hate is when some family members who MUST be FB friends:S start posting photos of me or my family without my approval, i mean you're free to post your own life for everyone to see but mine is mine, if i don't wanna post myself or my wife then my privacy should be respected.
Yalla!
FU....it's no use setting privacy options,dude....they know how to get their way around.
colt45...i'm not sure of anything of the sort but i can say that i looked far worse back then in those days :-P LOL the studio ppl would have been in a hurry to get the processed roll out of their studio asap :-D LOL
Going to church no more makes you a Christian than standing in a garage makes you a car. ~ Garrison Keillor
pictures are like stories..there are certain part of your activities or life that u wanted to tell through the photos... when they post hundreds of photos, thats because its their choice. so whether ur in their photo or not, as long as ur not showing something to be talked about or number or personal address in the photo..its just a photo..nothing more, nothing less...
temper is something u cant get rid of... by loosing it...
Yeah I know it's not always possible to stay out of a candid shot... well I hate to say this, but if ya can't beat 'em, join 'em................. not!
As far as misusing pics goes... how sure are you that they were not misused back in the day when you gave your roll to the local photo store to develop? Maybe back then you weren't aware of how, when or even if those pics were being misused like you think they are now.
People who put their pictures are not advertising it to the world but only to a selct group of friends. I don't have any of these accounts btw ;)

social networking is a great way to keep in touch with friends and get back in touch with long-lost friends.for that, just a pic to identify urself is enough.here,we're talking about ppl who upload hundreds of personal pics in their profiles.
Going to church no more makes you a Christian than standing in a garage makes you a car. ~ Garrison Keillor
both,in fact.my friends are also people i care about and when i try to reason with them, they don't seem to understand the reason.and about me staying out of a fotograph...it's not always possible to see who's clicking ur pics and we don't always strike a pose.i usually come to know of it when i get a notification that i've been tagged.i turned off the tag feature.and then it was worse....i didn't even know if and when a pic of mine was uploaded!and to be honest,i don't bother to go thru hundereds of photographs each time a friend creates an album to find if i'm in it....
Going to church no more makes you a Christian than standing in a garage makes you a car. ~ Garrison Keillor
you wouldnt want your profile to be in the social site unless u want the world to see it. u control ur own privacy, u create source to peek through ur personal details.
just expect that those info's u posted are not anymore private (even if u set it as private).
temper is something u cant get rid of... by loosing it...
Thanks Darude...that’s a great piece of information/ advice.

One life to live, live it to the fullest.
Now make up your mind with what really bothers you... is it your friends displaying their pics with you in it, or just their pics and putting up their life on an international showcase?
If it's the former, then stay out of the pic if you don't want yourself uploaded on a social site, or best make sure prior to taking the pic that they're not gonna be putting it up on a social website.
pitstop, i did notice that when i logged in to my FB the other day, i was redirected to the settings page, and "everyone" was ticked on the settings which i was pretty sure i set to "friends only", so i had to tick back friends only and then saved the settings.. by the way, care to be a farmville neighbour? ;)
in my FB friendlist whose Profiles were hacked and they had their pics uploaded in their profile. setting up the privacy doesnt help alot either.
you guys keep downloading applications on your profile. Keep in mind there are some files which traces your password. The application downloads and then in seconds your profile logs off and asks you to re login. Consider your self hacked then. Chances are 50-50 on that.
To each his own.. I don't put up any pics of mine now..
Put up a few hundred pics on Orkut during college, In every pic either I was drinking or smoking, I didn't know that my Mom had learned to access internet, once she saw those pics, that was it for me.. No more pics on the internet ;)
it hurts when u see ur own pics put up like that,y'know.and u can't do anything about it except plead with the other person to remove it.i've been in such a situation myself.i feel stupid when i cover my face or look in the other direction when fotos are being clicked during get togethers with friends...coz i know that before i even reach home, the pics would have reached these girls' facebook albums....
now tell me if it should bother me... :-S
Going to church no more makes you a Christian than standing in a garage makes you a car. ~ Garrison Keillor
Plus, when it was a University/College thing - when you can only register if you have an [edu] account, it was Great. But when they opened it to the public, it turned into hi5.
Victory_278692.....there are ways to hack into those settings,my friend.and she had posted pics of her and her hubby on the beach and stuff like that.
Da...wow!u do know how to get serious, dude!bravo! :-D i tried to ask her what the heck she thinks she's doing and she's like "so whaaaaaaaat??look around you, baby!everyone's doing it.what's the matter with you?" x-(
Going to church no more makes you a Christian than standing in a garage makes you a car. ~ Garrison Keillor
Like I said, it depends on each individual how much of their life they wanna put on display. As far as hacking goes, anything can be hacked into nowadays and that includes emails as well. If some people enjoy the world looking at their pics and putting up their life on an international showcase, it's their choice. So really, why be bothered, when they're not?
I am sort of against all the personal pictures being put up on facebook. Lets take the last update as an example. They changes the privacy settings and until you went in to notice the mess, EVERYone on your list, and friends list, and maybe anyone on facebook had access to it. Personally, I thought that was a stupid move. Because of that, not that I had any inappropriate images up, I deleted all the personal pictures of myself. There are sick people that too advantage of this update and navigated through all the pictures that they could. I'm sure some sick people saved them as well.
Anyway, I'm on facebook to stay in touch with my friends, and to play FarmVille :)
On linkedin..Yes.
Honeymoon snaps, does not necessarily mean showing initimate/bedroom ones, afterall posted in public forums mean making it PUBLIC property.
We could control privacy and allow ONLY whom we want to disclose our public and non public profile with Friends and Colleagues.
Agreed with Rehan they have public profile setting mechanism
Seriously how do you want me to get serious on some one's idiocy for posting their honeymoon pic on Social network site which can be hacked by any one any time and pic stolen and used in some one's else profile.
beyond the privacy issues, there is one more factor that bothers me.when i take a look at my friends' lists,i can see only couple pics or pics with their children!i mean, get a life, man!sometimes they even change their profile names and i end up wondering who the heck this is!
whatever happened to individuality???it's a different issue altogether if two ppl are using the same account.so they have both their faces put up there.or if the mommy and her little 5 month old baby are using the same account for that matter.if it is an exclusive account, then why put up a pic with 2 or more ppl in the pic???and i'm talking of ppl who put their own pics...not the ones who put up pseudo,celebrity,etc.pics.

happygolucky....i have also just put up a simple profile pic for ppl searching for me to identify me and then a couple of harmless baby pics of mine.
rehanbutt....i'm glad u liked the books :-)
rehanbutt,colt45....about the privacy settings,do refer to what i've written to MJ.it's of no importance to ppl who actually know how to hack into it.quoting what a Facebook official said once 'if you don't want your photographs to be misused, don't put them up on the internet in the first place.the moment you do so,it ceases to be 'private property' at once."
:-o
Going to church no more makes you a Christian than standing in a garage makes you a car. ~ Garrison Keillor
that i don't know saggi.. but those who post "not so decent" pics should be worried about that.. ;)
okay so maybe i shouldn't be telling this but in the hope that he never finds out that i did....i have a buddy who can unlock ANY album on ANY social site.he's just a minor computer geek.i once challenged him and in a matter of 2 hours,he sent me pics of one of my close friends from her album!to just say that i was shocked would be an understatement.....i have always been careful after that.
my point is that IT IS POSSIBLE!even if u restrict ur viewing privacy to 'only friends',anybody out there who knows how to do it can open ur album :-S
Going to church no more makes you a Christian than standing in a garage makes you a car. ~ Garrison Keillor
It depends on how much of your personal life you wanna make known to the world... I have a FB profile too and only my friends can see what i put up for display... people should learn to control their "privacy settings".
well privacy is very much appreciated by all the social networks . I think they all have some sort of access limitation mechanism.
and by the way I am enjoying the books you sent thanks a lot
SS...you are not alone thinking that way....I share the same opinion as yours...I wouldn't like Publicize or discuss my personal life / photos on open forums like the ones you mentioned. I just share one photo for identification with my friends as there are many others with the same name but no face there.
