The Karen carpenter Story (1989/TV)
Stars: Cynthia Gibb, Peter Michael Goetz, Louise Fletcher, etc.
Directed by Joseph Sargent
Here's a biographical account of the life of the famous singer Karen Carpenter of the duo The Carpenters, from her younger years as the voice behind her elder brother Richard's piano plays, to learning the drumbeat, to her first singing contract that her mother (Louise Fletcher, the famed 'Nurse Ratched' from the movie One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest) is not willing to accept without her brother along, the rise of their songs from the Billboard charts, her failed love attempts, and even her overconsciousness of gaining weight her whole life that led to anorexia and death at an early age of 32.
Had to find this movie once again since I remember the time I've seen this back then in a local channel back home, getting nostalgic with both the songs lately. After having my 2nd viewing for years, I was shocked and suddenly felt sad with the opening scenes. I mean it opens the scene on February 4, 1983, the day of her death, where the camera shows every achievement The Carpenters had made through the years and there she was lying on the floor with lights out and the medic picked her up...while playing the tune of "Rainy Days and Mondays"!! God! That was a sad eerie opening! What saves the possible boredom that may enhance new audiences who'd wish to try this movie was that it was nice to hear PLENTY of music by the Carpenters in the whole movie, including "We've Only Just Begun", "Close To You", "A Song For You", and more of it.
A 'touching' movie that's definitely for fans of The Carpenters.
