Mumbai: David Coleman Headley, the suspected Lashkar-e-Toiba operative arrested in the US by the FBI for plotting terror attacks to be carried out in India and Denmark, had stayed at an apartment in Breach Candy area while living in Mumbai.

According to reports, Headley had stayed on the fifth floor of A Block of Shyam Niwas housing society in south Mumbai’s Breach Candy area.

The apartment – Number 56, where Headley stayed as a paying guest along with an elderly Sindhi couple for almost a year beginning April 2008 – is located near the US Consulate.

The revelation comes amidst the investigating agencies’ efforts to retrace the steps of Headley and his associate Tahawwur Rana across India.

The Sindhi couple described Headley as “sweet and charming”.

Speaking to a leading daily, 75-year-old Mrs Kriplani said, “David Headley was a very sweet and charming man... He was extremely courteous, and never created any trouble for us.”

“My husband (who passed away recently) always used to tell me how nice and helpful he was. He seemed like a most sincere and well-meaning person. I am really shocked by what I came to know about him from the newspapers,” she added.

According to Mrs Kriplani, Headley used to stay in the apartment for nearly a week and then he used to go travelling on work for two to three months.

Headley had told the elderly couple that he was running an immigration agency in the city.

Meanwhile, sources said that the National Investigation Agency (NIA) is investigating Headley’s possible role in the blasts preceding the Mumbai terror attacks last November.

NIA officials, sources said, believe it would be too early to rule out his involvement in the Delhi, Ahmedabad and Bangalore serial blasts.

The NIA is likely to study in detail the blasts between 2005 and 2008 and match them with the movement of Headley and Rana across the country.

i remember watching "body of lies" focusing on the terrorists minds and their tactics, obviously they will always be many steps ahead of governmental bodies.

many attempts to study the terrorists minds in order to predict their next step, some succeeded, many failed, they're like flu virus, they come in many faces and able to upgrade themselves to endure new antibiotics formulas.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, Nov 16, DHNS:

Police and intelligence agencies have found that Tahawwur Hussain Rana, Canadian accomplice of suspected LeT activist David Coleman Headley, moved around suspiciously in Kochi where he stayed for a day on November 16 last year.

Sleuths, who are now scouring Kochi for any evidence regarding Headley and Rana, have found that Rana had not used any facilities of the Taj Residency on Marine Drive where he stayed other than lodging.

“He booked his room via Internet through a travel agency. He has not made a phone call from the room or used the restaurant, bar or business centre,” sources said.

Rana went for boating in the sprawling backwaters overlooking the hotel but did not use the hotel’s boating facilities. The police have found that he went for boating using a private service and also visited M G Road. An official of the National Investigating Agency arrived in Kochi on Monday to carry out further probes. Meanwhile, investigating agencies have been tipped off on two Keralites who had contacts with Rana. One of them, an emigration agent, was Shameer who shuttles between Kochi and Saudi Arabia and the other person is a Keralite businessman based in the US. It was on analysing a call that Shameer received on his cell phone from Pakistan that his links with Rana have surfaced. The police here believe that it was Shameer, who is now in Saudi Arabia, arranged for Rana’s stay in Kochi.

Intelligence agencies suspect that Rana’s visit to Kochi as an emigration consultant offering US and Canadian visas might have been a cover for terror activities. He had placed an advertisement in a prominent English daily on November 17, the day he left Kochi for Mumbai.
