So, we are really going to Qatar!

How crazy is that?

I kept thinking that this would fall through. . .I knew it could-and today we finally passed all the tests-security, physical and mental health-whatever they are doing when they are peeking into our entire lives. . .

So, today they packed our house up and sent our HH goods by air shipment. We are in a lovely hotel near the airport in Seattle waiting for all the hoops to be jumped through (training in States, personal business, etc. etc.) My son is withdrawn from his school. If they cancel it now-eek.

Wish us luck!

LOL, I am optimistic, but pragmatic. I have lived in diverse areas of the states (and make no mistake, they are very diverse in many ways) and know that there are always some (lots) of the unexpected-good and not so much.

Walking in NY near Rockefeller Center, I came across a huge cat that turned out to be a rat. Took the shine off of THAT romance:) But I still love NYC, just the real one, not the one of "Breakfast at Tiffany's". The real one is infinitely more interesting than what I ever expected.

We will be transported with our luggage to whatever hotel they choose. Once I know, I will tell you, Paula:) I need dishes. Today, the Starbucks guy was so sweet, handed me a handful of coffee packets when he heard I was going there-he had been there before for R&R while in the military, and said I needed some Starbucks to tide me over til I figured out how to get to the malls:) He knows me so well!

If you lower your expectations, you should do just fine.

At least you're arriving when the temps are tolerable and will get increasingly pleasant.

In the summer though, if not sooner, you'll wonder why you came.

And keep in mind, "It is what it is." Smile and keep on going.

Welcome to Qatar.

After the first few months, Doha will slowly "grow" on you. Eventually, you'll get used to the "pace" of life here.

Hope you have a good stay with your family.

Hi everyone. Our psychological exam(?) was more to see if we had reasonable expectations and were amenable to living in and dealing with a different culture. We know it will be really different. And sometimes it will put us out. And other customs may bother us a bit at first (or forever, who knows!). We are lucky-we have each other. I was married to a person from another culture entirely and my husband has worked out of the US before-so we aren't totally unprepared for culture shock. Our kids are kind of in for it-but they have us and we have been doing our best to prepare them.

We had to do a thorough physical for the company-we were called V.E.P.'s by the doctor. We are "Very Expensive Persons" so they want to make sure we are physically able to handle it and don't need any medical care that will be unavailable in Qatar. My son recently had some specialized pediatric surgery that would not be available in most of the world, so I appreciate why they do this.

I know this will all still be a shock and we are kidding ourselves thinking we are really prepared for it:) But as much as virgin expats can be prepared, we are. (Hubby did his 2 years abroad as military-not an expat.)
