Drunk Engineer Assaults cop in Qatar
An American petroleum engineer has been sentenced to three-month imprisonment for “physically assaulting, under the influence of liquor, a Qatari policeman on duty”.
According to the charge sheet, the incident took place on September 1, 2007. The accused, then 25, tore the uniform of the cop who tried to arrest him at around 4am.
The Doha court of first instance also jailed him for an additional year for stealing the mobile phone of a driver and for another month for drunkenness in public.
The judge, who said that he used the mercy factor in giving the lenient punishment, ordered the subsequent deportation of the convict after he served the jail term.
The engineer was arrested after the police received a complaint from a taxi driver. The driver told the interrogators that the man flagged him down near a Doha hotel. “I refused to drop the passenger to the market because he was visibly drunk but he forced himself into the car.
“After some time, he demanded to use my mobile phone to make an urgent call and after he finished, he pocketed the mobile. He also took QR60 from me. I used another phone that I carried to call the police and when the policemen arrived, he assaulted them with a stick which he picked up from the spot.”
The American denied the charges during pre-trial interrogations saying that the driver tried to assault him after he left the cab. He also said that he saw “a group of people following him to attack him” before the policemen tried to arrest him.
“I never tore the uniform of the policeman but I admit that I was drunk,” he said.
Explaining the conviction, the court said that it was satisfied with the testimony of the Asian driver and the other witnesses, including the law enforcement personnel. The judge said that the statements of the accused “further proved” the allegations.
The American failed to attend his trial and the sentence, which was pronounced almost two years after the alleged incident, was given in absentia. Court sources said that the man had been deported from the country.

I'll read the newspaper and 9 times out of 10 the accused is not present at their own trial because they have already left the country.
because the American one is the worst for assisting us in any manner here, much less a legal one. The guy obviously had an exit visa to leave while his trial was pending. BTW, from what I have read this happens with Qataris pretty frequently. There is a lot of leaving the country while awaiting a trial and being sentenced in absentia. I've read of cases from things like theft & embezzlement to rape, drunk driving and murder.
But I have to say I am not surprised by your response.

Most of the second page/ third page in Gulf times usually have these news.... but the fact is, most of the accused are deported on "administrative order" way before the actual trial.
Reality 101 - The embassy of the Big Dog is more powerful than those of the Chihuahuas.
this guy must have chromed before or after getting drunk...
well at least thats news
The accused is been already deported two years back and a court trial and judgement now????
