Is the U.S. Preparing to Bomb Iran?

The Pentagon is always making plans, but based on a little-noticed funding request recently sent to Congress, the answer to that question appears to be yes.

First, some background: Back in October 2007, ABC News reported that the Pentagon had asked Congress for $88 million in the emergency Iraq/Afghanistan war funding request to develop a gargantuan bunker-busting bomb called the Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP). It's a 30,000-pound bomb designed to hit targets buried 200 feet below ground. Back then, the Pentagon cited an "urgent operational need" for the new weapon.

Now the Pentagon is shifting spending from other programs to fast forward the development and procurement of the Massive Ordnance Penetrator. The Pentagon comptroller sent a request to shift the funds to the House and Senate Appropriations and Armed Services Committees over the summer.

The comptroller said the Pentagon planned to spend $19.1 million to procure four of the bombs, $28.3 million to accelerate the bomb's "development and testing", and $21 million to accelerate the integration of the bomb onto B-2 stealth bombers.

'Urgent Operational Need'

The notification was tucked inside a 93-page "reprogramming" request that included a couple hundred other more mundane items.

Why now? The notification says simply, "The Department has an Urgent Operational Need (UON) for the capability to strike hard and deeply buried targets in high threat environments. The MOP is the weapon of choice to meet the requirements of the UON." It further states that the request is endorsed by Pacific Command (which has responsibility over North Korea) and Central Command (which has responsibility over Iran).

The request was quietly approved. On Friday, McDonnell Douglas was awarded a $51.9 million contract to provide "Massive Penetrator Ordnance Integration" on B-2 aircraft.

This is not the kind of weapon that would be particularly useful in Iraq or Afghanistan, but it is ideally suited to hit deeply buried nuclear facilities such as Natanz or Qom in Iran. but a bunch of 3rd worlders with the bomb??

aren't the nut-cases of Pakistan, India, and North Korea enough??

Only the first world should have the bomb.

My signature is supporting Irans power to protect itself against more allied aggression. Having this power doesnt mean it will be used because only a fool like Bush would do that . Iran having this power doesnt cater to war, it's A check mate so that no more aggression befalls this region.

I do wish people will stop equating any mans actions as though he represents all of the muslim world.

We can argue that 9/11 was an inside job, anyone can see that!

And it all leads up to what we have here. The domino effect they created.

I get why the governments subscribe to War on terror but when everyday people such as yourself consider Iran a threat, blinding yourselves to the obvious.

I believe it's a hopeless case and the ones that condone this are in on it and planted in this region or are brainwashed.

I wont go through all of the UN's contradictions or those that it serves, you all know them.

"Yes I do think someone would use the bomb.... if Bin Laden could get hold of one and detonate it in Washington I'm sure he would..."

You mean, he wouldn't care if the earth was not suitable for life anymore, because he wants to go to heaven anyway? Then all Islamic states owning a nuke are a grave danger!!

exiledsaint, nuclear power brings the ultimate problem of contaminating the planet with radioactive waste!! That's what it brings. Do you really think anyone nowadays would use a nuclear bomb? It will destroy the whole planet, and the winds and the atmosphere know no national borders!

By anonymous• 8 Oct 2009 10:28
anonymous

Actually, yes, exiledsaint, I think they should leave it up to the people. If they can't get rid of a corrupt leader then they don't deserve anything else. No leader can survive if the majority of the people turns against him!

Iran has some exceptional scientists but nuclear power brings more than just energy. It brings prestige, negotiating power and expertise you can use to your advantage..... plus it brings the ultimate, don't f*** with me because the consequences will be severe....

Just to play the devils advocate MD, do you think other countries, the UN should stand back and watch a government or rebels murder thousands of people just to avoid a war?

For example after the annexation of Czechoslovakia and then the carve up of Poland should have the UK and France carried on its policy of appeasement?

By anonymous• 8 Oct 2009 10:12
anonymous

This man (Hu Wan) understands. Iran is floating in oil and gas. Why should they bother with a dangerous and expensive method of generating energy? The radioactive waste is the main problem, where to store it? Dump it over Israel? Plutonium isotopes have a half life from 24.000 to 80 million years!

By Hu Wan• 8 Oct 2009 10:03
Hu Wan

the US bombed Libya, and Israel bombed Iraq.

But am just curious, why does Iran operate a nuclear facility? Isn't this basically for power generation? Iran is floating on oil and perhaps natural gas too.

What would you do if someone has expressed their intention of obliterating you from the map?

Dali I hope one day war is not necessary in this world and I think war with Iran is probably not a necessity at this moment but at times is it the only course of action we have?

In Europe during the 30s we stood back and did nothing and appeased the Germans and look what happened next. In the 90s in Rwanda the world just watched as hundreds of thousands got slaughtered.

Some wars are just. Look at the war the west waged against the Serbians in defence of Bosnia and then Kosovo.

I'm pretty sure the Kuwaitis are thankful that the 'west' mainly came to their aid when Saddam invaded all those years ago....

Iran with a nuclear bomb is maybe ok, but it will make a lot of Arab states very nervous...

ExiledSaint, please don't look at it only from the personal viewpoint should they deside to strike and Iran retaliates, only then will you see it as "the ONE problem we face"

We should oppose War in general.

I'm sure you just said that in the practical sense however you do find Wars a trajedy to all mankind.

Labada, None taken, but I feel that it is you who has been alone too long dear, and that the Vietman, Afghanistan, Iraq examples ought to have given you ample time to do your 'objective understanding' You most of all should google the images of the mangeled bodies of victims of the past and know that victims of the future are walking around living very valid lives as you and I are unawear or helpless to a very bleak and tragic future they imminently face.

i suggest you take a good look especially at images of the dead infants to get a less comical grasp of the seriousness of this issue

Yeah the one problem we have here is if the Yanks do attack and the Iranians decide to retaliate against the US base here their missiles are crap and will probably land in Doha instead....

Is everybody OK with Iran being bombed with this vagrant disregard for Human life?!

Has the media programmed people into this War culture reality show?

I can't believe how the quality of the human spirit can sink to even lower levels.

People, what goes around comes around and just imagine one day people discussing your country with you in it being bombed...Not enough? Please Google Iraq or Vietnam victims and imagine if it were you or a loved one. Actually if they do strike then Iran will strike Qatar, this means all of you sitting behind your pc's comfortably are in for a rude awakening!

Nothing short of being appalled at any suggestion of bombing anyone should be expressed. I'm so disappointed.

The MOP has already been procured by Israel. If and when the US does decide to strike against Iran, it will probably be through its proxy Israel, rather than a direct involvement by its own forces.
