Q.A.W.S Disaster!
I was there at QAWS and it was a heartbreaking sight. Here are some of the pictures of the accident.
They lost 60 cats which had been relocated. It was horrible. They lost two dogs as well.
They need immediate help. They have sent almost 55 dogs to another shelter, but will have to remove them in 48 hours. These are a few things which they will need.
1) Volunteers to help them with resettling the dogs, at least for a month.
2) Animal food. Their entire stock burned down.
3) Help to rebuild the shelter (this might come in later)
Please please please please help them if you can!
MOD NOTE: The QAWS people would like to extend theie heartfelt appreciation to the Qatar Fire Force who reached there within a few minutes of the disaster. Their prompt action saved so many animals today.
Thanks to all of them. They were plain heroic today!
If anyone is interested, please visit www.qaws.org to contact one of the in-charges. Appreciate all the help you can give them.
OMG this place is amazing, took part in the ROTA program and we went here, was fantastic
That's terrible. if there is anything i can do...i donated money and went to the 3rd of october expat.
im only 13 years old and i really want to help with the re-build of qaws. i love animals and i have a 6 cats at home...5 of them are kittens. i wanted to volenteer in the summer but unfortunatly this tragic incident happened.
if there is anything i can do please tell me.
for a couple of weeks or so and i gave Chelsea's number. Wish I could keep one but I'm out most of the day and weekends as well...I'll see how I could help...
luck!
... just as a reminder of how much more there is ahead and that QAWS needs us to continue doing what we can :)
Coffee morning announced - Mums in Doha! We will be collecting donations that morning to help towards items QAWS needs to get back up and running again. Hope to see many of you there and to be able to catch up after the summer holiday! :)
Bumping us up as we're down on page 3!!
Donations:
We now have storage!! GAC have kindly donated a 10ft container that we can begin to store collected items in. Please visit www.qaws.org to see the list of what is needed. Unfortunately we can't take food or cleaning fluids into storage as we don't know how long they will be stored for.
Foster Homes:
We still need foster homes that can take in dogs. We are specifically looking for homes without cats and a couple of the dogs need to go to foster homes where they will be the only pet. If you think you can help please call us asap on 539 6074. These dogs must be in foster homes before Thursday as all the vets and kennels are fully booked for Eid and they will have no where to go.
Site Clearance:
We've still not received the fire investiagtion report. As soon as we can get permission to we will have the site cleared and we will begin to look at getting construction materials donated.
www.qaws.org
Some of the dogs that had only come in last week hadn't had their vaccinations yet and in the stress of trying to work out who was who and where they were it was easier for the vets to just re-vaccinate everyone.
www.qaws.org
I'm curious and don't mean any disrespect by this question. We did go to The Veterinary Surgery on Friday and made a donation toward the vet bill and walked 10 of the dogs .... but I'm curious as to why they were all vaccinated upon arrival at the vets.
Was it because they customarily aren't vaccinated until rehomed?
Or because their records showing prior vaccinations weren't available / burned?
In particular, I would like to know since my kids are often at QAWS walking the dogs and I'm wondering at what point the animals receive their shots.
Many Thanks

We haven't received the fire investigation report yet so we're not allowed to start clearing the site.
Believe me we're the ones that want to start clearing the most but until we get permission we can't.
We will let people know when we get the report and the sire is cleared so we can start thinking about rebuilding a new shelter.

Hey guys has anyone thought about getting a dump truck and a bulldozer to clean up the burning debris? How much will it cost to collect all that debris in QR?
I rather pitch a 1500 qr to start the clean up.
I rather watch an empty lot, instead of a depressive lot.
Reconstruction starts with clean up.

... can you tell I am a beginner when it comes to bumping topics? ;)
Thanks for the info :)
There is no need to bump up the topic to the front page. It is already on the front page and FEATURED. hehe.
But your intentions are noble. I plan to visit the old shelter one of these days. Gotta check out if there are any more photographing I could do around there.
As an update.
...this topic back onto page 1!
What is happening folks? Is this subject already 'worn out'? Well it isn't for me! :)))
Thanks Chelsea :)
Every little bit helps! :)))

... fantastic news that foster parents are refusing to part with their new pets. I am sure it will take notime at all before you and all voluntary helpers will have their hands full again :)
It's a little more complicated now they're all in foster homes! I'm trying to gather a list of those still up for adoptions (lots of foster parents are refusing to part with them!!) and then I'll get photos up on the website asap for people to look at. I can then direct people to foster homes to meet the animals and if all goes well we'll meet up to complete adoption paperwork.
www.qaws.org
Mintus, all we did was go down to the vets and decided on a pup to adopt and they are gonna e-mail the paper work to be signed. We found it pretty straight forward
Myself and my friend have had 2 dogs from Qaws and love them dearly. Can you advise what the procedure is now for adopting?
we would be idealy interested in a young dog to better integrate them into the pack.
Mintus
If you would like to contact me privately please send me a pm and I will exchange details with you to meet up and collect from you what you want to donate for the tabletop sale :)
Greeker: thanks :) your post made me smile and laugh too. You have done an amazing job with the photos. We looked around yesterday when we were there and the reality sinks in when you are face to face with the damage. What can I say... my skin crawled!
Not sure if its going to be of any help but I have lots of clothes that I was going to give to charity but if they will be of any use for the table top sale I would love to donate them. I would be greatful if anyone could give me some info as to what I need to do?
Hi
I know people will have donated goods and services to you, I was wondering if you could let me know what you need now and where it can be delivered to (I understand you cannot accept cash donations due to your non charitable status). I would love to take in a cat - but I already have a cat and she hates other cats (and my apartment is small)!!!
Thank you
I tip my imaginary hat at you.
What a lady!
Chelsea, I'm glad she's WITH QAWS rather than againt it.
:-)
P.S to Chelsea: I read the 'name-call' before it was edited. I though the spelling was wrong. it should've been 'rse' instead of 'ss', just to be anatomically and grammatically correct, hehehe.
... Mums in Doha, Doha Expat Mums and Kids AND Expatwoman Qatar will be holding a joint tabletop sale of baby- and child items beginning of October. Everything from the table rentals AND entrance fees will revert towards QAWS. I will post about it tomorrow on Mums in Doha and also on this topic as I am sure there will be many people interested in attending :)
Xena/Chelsea, when it is over we will contact you to inform you about the amount we have and you can tell us what you need most or which Vet Surgery you want us to give it to towards the QAWS account.
We had a couple of empties taken by some other volunteers today to refill and replace so the guys know to hold onto them all!
Thank you for taking them down and sorry I was late - I was wearing a QAWS staff t-shirt whilst I was in Carrefour buying supplies and I kept getting stopped by people offering support and wanting to know how to help!!
Note to Mods... Sorry :D In the circumstances I think I did very well to use a word that's not REALLY swearing - more just name calling :D
www.qaws.org
I'll be back in a couple of days, just ask the guys to keep the empties for me and let me know what else you need :)
Good night to you all!
the farm animals definately won't die of thirst;-) from what I could see this morning when I went down, there was already 200litres before you got there:-) YOu are wonderful, thank you.
Yes, tap water is definately ok for washing, cleaning and for the animals to drink.

... I just came back from QAWS, sorry I couldn't stay longer as I would have loved to meet you. I dropped 200 liters of water off in 5 liter containers. Could you please keep the empties so I can pick them up when I go back to QAWS in a couple of days? I can then fill them up with tap water which I am sure will be fine for washing and drinking water for the donkey/bull.
Expat Sueno... ;) ... about my train of thoughts! Glad you have made you giggle! :)
Catch up later folks, have a lovely Iftar/evening all :)
What is the basis for your assumption? From your reply, it seems as though you aren't convinced.
if you aren't a total troll and would like to be taken seriously in this discussion, would you care to elaborate how you reached the conclusion that there was something suspicious about the fire? What made you think this might be a propaganda act?
If you have no coherent explanation or theories about the above questions, then you might as well go stir S**T somewhere else. This forum is not the place nor the occasion to do it.
hoipe so...
I think we also have some QL folks in the construction business who could lend a hand. I'll start calling some people I know, as well.
Thanks for the laugh, Alumnar. I'm still giggling (seriously). The space would need to be much, much larger for Alumnar's complete train of thought ;)
Azi, the investigation is still happening - we are waiting for the Sheikh who owns the farm to confirm he has had the call from the department regarding the end of the investigation.
Was down this morning and the smell is not very nice - Chelsea will be down this afternoon to start with moving some stuff - but nothing can be removed as yet.
When we get the go ahead, we will need TLB's or backacters for moving the rubble along with trucks to ferry it away. So please let him know and see if he can help with that...
Thanks.

Ditto ;) You know me - that post of mine is definitely 'kind', right? ;)
I'll leave a big blank space for all the words to describe 120kmph's statement - they would be deleted by the (bless them) moderators anyway:

with the pictures and all the attestations of the people here, you still think it's a propaganda?
and he called his boss and his team to tell about the fire.
Is the investigation finished already? I think we can't do any constructions or anything unless the police investigation is finished, right?

Finally pardon me if I missed this info, but what caused the fire in the first place, was it at all investigated by the fire department as they usually should assess the source.'
@ RD – QAWS has been trying for the last 5 years to be recognised as a official charity – we have been everywhere, spoken to everyone, filled in all the paper work and sometimes even given in documentation over and above what was required, but still, we the individual QAWS patrons, along with the help of the local and expat public – that assist to keep the shelter in food and supplies - are solely responsible for the expenses of running the rescue. Inshallah, someone will hear us, one day.
The initial finding on the cause of the fire is an electrical fault – our staff on site told us that they found the electrical box on fire and tried to extinghuish it, but it was too late.
'Sugar Qtr said I suggest you contact QACA ...
I suggest you contact QACA to start legalizing QAWS. I'm sure they wouldn't mind it.'
@ Sugar Qtr… please see my above reply to RD.

leilany2, FYI, RICH QATARI's as you are calling out for don't give a rats bum about cats and dogs. Truth be told. I mentioned this accident to a few people that I thought could financially help, but all they said was, cats? dogs? WHO CARES! I even mentioned this to an American and she said the same thing. I think the news is out and all the supporters are doing the best they could in helping out QAWS family.
Watch your words, I'm offended by your comment!'
@ Sugar Qtr again… actually, I beg to differ… there are many rich Qataris that are more than happy to help… I am offended by YOUR comment of generalizing….
'120kph@roundabout said what is this? ...
a kind of propaganda to make the attention of peoples?hope its a accident?......'
@ 120kph…. I have no idea what you say to you… I am so shocked that you would even make such a statement…. That you would even think that anyone of us could contemplate hurting animals that we rescued in the first place, why would we have bothered to take them in? I will speak on behalf of myself and the rest of the QAWS staff and say, we are deeply offended that you would even suggest something so malicious… we have been devastated by the loss of our animals… The trauma of the surviving dogs is even more difficult for us to bear – watching normally lively dogs, lying in the kennel at the vet surgery, not eating, depressed – do you really believe we want this for our animals? Death and destruction? I pity your mind…
however, saying this.... I am not surprised - we knew at sometime, someone would make an accusation like this... as bad as it sounds, thank goodness we WERE NOT insured, as then many more would probably think like 120... QAWS have lost everything, from paper towels to brand new A/C units, washing machines and fridges... and most importantly animals that were very near and dear to us - statements like the one made above - are made by people with distrust in there hearts...

Â
Doha Expat Mums and Kids, in conjunction with ExpatWoman Qatar and QL's Mums in Doha, will be holding a "Babies & Kids Tabletop Sale" to help QAWS, whose shelter was destroyed by a fire last week. The event will be held on October 3rd from 1pm-4pm inside the Qipco Clubhouse (in the West Bay). All of the money raised will be used to purchase construction and animal supplies that to help get QAWS up and running again.
Space for the sellers is limited and must be paid in advance. The tables are two meters long and may be shared with one other person if desired - the cost is 100QR per table and it includes the entrance fee for two people. You need not be a DEMK/EW/MID member to purchase a table.Â
Shoppers will pay 10QR each at the door. For planning purposes, please RSVP if you think you might be able to attend - no worries if you won't be able to make it, but it will help us immensely if we have an rough idea of the number of attendees.Â
Due to limited space inside the event, please plan to park your pram at the door (tiny babies excepted, of course).
Again, all proceeds (minus expenses) from the table fees and shopper entrance fees will go directly to purchase supplies for QAWS. We're looking forward to an enormously successful event to help get the shelter up and running as soon as possible!
I cant believe i just read what you wrote.. do u even bother to think before u say anything?! if you dont have anything worthwhile to say then please do not waste our time nor our precious space in useless and nonsense remarks such as what u did.
To all QAWS, Xena, Chelsea, and all the rest, I am so sorry i was unable to make it.. i hoped i'd be let out from work but was not so fortunate.
Please do update me the moment there is clearance to begin clean-up as i want to be there. Xena has my number, please do sms me, call me, or whatever you see necessary to contact me.

Do you seriously think that after 5 years of working our asses off and rescuing hundreds of animals we would set all our hard work on fire?
Geez man - you're sick and I suggest you stay off threads concerning QAWS in the future. We don't need people like you spreading rumours that we set fire to our animals to get publicity.
MOD NOTE: Please do not swear on the forum. Thank you.

Very bad choice of words, dude. They don't have to kill animals to get noticed.
Tell me, do you always think so crookedly?

Wat a tragic ? Very Sad to see those poor animals.
Hope everything would be OK. Just saw today in the news paper headlines and quickly searched for QAWS...:(
QL members are always there for any kinda help required.
ITs really sad to see the efforts made to make tat tunnel by QLVG and many QL members and now its burned....:(
May God give you the strength for overcoming from the great loss.

The webpage is being put together over the next few days whilst we collect information on what we need and what animals are available for adoption so please check back regularly as we add more information.

Ehem - our bull's not crazy... He just thinks he's a dog!! He's absolutely fine and loving the extra attention as there's no other animals around..
The donkey was NOT impressed as the fire fighters flooded her paddock and she hates getting her feet wet! We had to try and explain to her that it was necessary to make sure her house didn't catch fire but she wasn't having any of it as she stood on her little island of dry dirt! We swapped her and the bull over so she was dry and he could play in the mud!!

i did't see a bull today... it was only poor donkey, sadly chewing his hay... :(

Alumnar - I should be around at the farm from 4pm!
As I said before, please could everyone hold off on donating items (except water!) for a little while as although we really appreciate it we can't store it. All our dogs have plenty of food to last them a while and as soon as we have a storage area set up I will let you all know. We're hopefully getting a 20ft container donated that we can use but until that's at the shelter please hold onto your donations.
Again as I said, please don't be buying the guys anything just yet as they have nowhere to put things and they are starting to panic!! As soon as their new accomodation is built we will be looking for help to furnish it but until then electrical appliances are at risk of being chewed by mice as they will just be left in the office. The same with food as the fridges and freezers are not online due to no power!
They have moved into temporary accomodation outside of the farm and have everything they need there. Please do not think that they have lost everything as everything that was lost (except the furniture which is not needed until the accomodation has been built) has been replaced.
www.qaws.org
... I have come across so many people who just look stupidly at me when I ask them if they would like to help as I know they have the means to help out. It just makes me turn their back to them for good and that is how it will stay. Whoever doesn't have a heart towards animals/pets is in my books not worth a second thought.
Let's just stay united like one big family and do the best we can.
Chelsea, another load of water coming your way tomorrow. I will come over tomorrow afternoon and will come and meet you personally.
leilany2, FYI, RICH QATARI's as you are calling out for don't give a rats bum about cats and dogs. Truth be told. Yes we have adopted a lady cat and named her Ferjie! We are all in love with her. My daughter's nanny picked her and the name too.
We will make sure those 2 young men at QAWS will get some support too. I will go over tomorrow and bring them some money and bedding, I will see what I can get for them... or just give them the cash to buy what they most need.
I am setting up a weekly coffee morning for fundraising. We will be charging for the coffees and cakes and everything will revert towards QAWS. I am already working on a big event for the near future, so watch this space as I will be in touch for this event for after Eid.
Hay can be bought behind the camel market just off Wholesale Market Street. If anybody knows of somebody with an open van that would make things easier.
Friends, please don't let this thread drop to page 4 again! Keep it up so it stays in people's memories and day-by-day life. God bless you all!
Thank you for your concern over the guys at the farm but rest assured they have not been forgotten about and we have sorted everything out for them.
They did not lose their mobiles (I've been calling them all day!), t.v's or stereos as they were all in the concrete building that was unharmed. As there is no power at the shelter at the moment they can;t use them so this may be the problem. We should have a generator up and running by the end of today so there should be power in their room and hopefully the main office next door. They should then have the air conditioning back, along with their lights, tv, fridge etc.
2 of the guys lost their clothes, furniture and bedding but we have given them money and they are both now sporting new wardrobes! Furniture and bedding we will be organised when the electricity is back on at the shelter and their new accomodation is built. We are struggling for storage space so please do not donate larger items until we have a storage area set up!
There is always a couple of the guys at the farm during the day as they are looking after the farm animals and we are using the farm as a collection point for food donations etc. but they are staying elsewhere in the evenings. As soon as the generator is working they will be taking it in turns for 2 to sleep at the farm and 2 elsewhere, alternating until we can get them all sorted again.
The main donation needed for them at the moment is drinking water - the guys, farm animals and farm cats are all using bottled water until we can arrange to get a water tank up and running again. The stream water is being used for cleaning and washing the animals equipment so it's just drinking water needed at the moment.
Again, thank you to all our supporters and the guys will be chuffed to hear that they are being thought of as well! They have been stars throughout this whole tragedy and without them we would have lost all the animals. They're treating this period as a well deserved break but are already starting to potter around doing minor repair works on the farm animals paddocks to keep themselves amused!
www.qaws.org
I'm totally gutted to hear about QAWS yesterday. We are unable to adopt an animal as only a week ago today we adopted our adorable little kitten, Barney, he's just settling in now, so I don't think adding another animal into the mix would be a good thing right now.
We're off to Qatar Vetinary Centre this afternoon to give Barney his booser vaccination, so I will ask there what I can do to help.
We can't spare all that much cash at the moment, but I would like to donate as much time as I possibly can. Are there still dogs in need of walking? Cat litter trays that need clearing or any other jobs I could do?
I am going to try to organise something within my company as well, but for now, I'd love to help by giving time, if someone will let me know what to do and where :D
Good luck to everyone involved,
Jayne x
This country is very rich I'm sure YOU wouldn't mind to donate for a simple shelter for cats and dogs.If YOU can provide shelter for expensive arabian horses....(those very rich sheiks can donate for these abandoned lonely animals),I know you cannot make money out of these poor animals but have a heart pls...
Before leaving for the summer, QAWs was mine and my husbands main entertainment! I fell in love w/all of the dogs and the people I met at the farm...We look forward to getting info on how to help for the future REBUILD...Please keep the info coming on the continuing ways we can help!
Just want to say that its great how everyone has helped so much with the dogs and cats in the recent disaster but please spare a thought for the boys who look after these animals everyday at QAWS.
Two of the boys have lost all their belongings in the fire - at the moment they have no electricity and are still living on site. I am sure they would appreciate anything that can make their life a bit more comfortable too.
Suggestions Non perishable food, drinks, clothing, bedding, towels, etc even a bit of cash as personal things such as cell phones, stereo and tv have all been lost.
They have suffered too - give them a bit of tender loving care as well.
Anyone who is thinking of going to the vets' offices to donate..they will also be grateful for Clorex, disinfectant, soap powder etc. Cleaning the overflowing pens and the blankets is going on non-stop, so supplies are badly needed. Thanks.
I suggest you contact QACA to start legalizing QAWS. I'm sure they wouldn't mind it.
~*Speak when you are angry and you will make the best speech you will ever regret*~
Don't plan on it being quick I know it takes alot of time, and I am sure they will not allow anything til that is over with. So plan long term! Sorry but thats the reality.
Raison - We get no funding or assistance from the authorities other then they leave us to do our own thing :D. There is supposed to be a fire investigation but we can't get an answer as to when it will take place and we need to start clearing the site as soon as possible. It was an electrical fault but we're not sure what exactly.
Alumnar - I hear you adopted a cat from the Veterinary Surgery today.. Congratulations!! What are you going to call it? If you know any other cat lovers that can foster please let me know as we have only managed to place one cat today and we still have 10 looking for foster homes.

At least, after the disaster, a ray of light :)
Let's see what happens this coming week about building materials, I will be in touch with you as soon as I have news :)
Thank you to everyone who has donated and supported us. We now have plenty of food and bedding for the time being and are running out of storage space!
As an unofficial charity we are NOT legally allowed to ask for money donations, however, if anyone would like to assist us by paying off some of our vets bill at either the Veterinary Sugery or Qatar Veterinary Centre we would be very grateful. Please inform the receptionists that you would like to donate to the QAWS bill and ask for it to be credited to our account. All the animals were vaccinated when they entered the vets so this will be on our bill.
We are eternally grateful to everyone - volunteers, surgery staff and supporters and we will be asking for help when the time comes to rebuild and re-equip the shelter. Hopefully this will be sooner rather then later and nearer the time we will start a collection for food, bowls, towels, collars etc so that we can reopen fully stocked and ready to go.
In the meantime please spread the word that we are looking for volunteers to help clear the site (when the fire investigation is complete) and donate building materials for the new shelter.
By tomorrow night we should have moved ALL our animals into foster homes and we are honestly stunned by how much support we have had and how fast we have been able to foster out our animals.

yes they are Hay and water for Bella and Ferdi would be great!

This is tragic. I hope people will be able to help out with this. Let me see how I can mobilise things on my part. QAWS, be strong in this hour of need. Hugs.
The majority of the rescue animals have gone to The Veterinary Surgery.
The staff at the clinics will fill out temporary foster forms that will allow us to contact foster parents to check how things are going and let you all know when they can be returned.
We've had dozens of people offering foster care - far more homes then animals but PLEASE if you are able to foster any animal - there are many rescues in need of homes/foster care at the surgeries that are not necessarily QAWS animals but please contact them directly as they will have more information about what animals they have available.
QAWS currently has 7 dogs and 11 cats that still need foster homes.
www.qaws.org
i like to help them..but i dont know where it is located..any one know the location of QAWS
[img_assist|nid=26062|title=|desc=|link=none|align=center|width=|height=0]
There are currently still the following animals from QAWS looking for foster homes:
4 dogs at the Veterinary Surgery
3 cats at the Veterinary Surgery
1 dog at Qatar Veterinary Centre
4 cats at Qatar Veterinary Centre
2 dogs at Pampered Pets
We are trying to move the QAWS animals out of these locations as soon as possible as they are putting a huge strain on the staff there who have found space at such short notice and have very kindly been looking after them since the fire.
The Veterinary Surgery and Qatar Veterinary Centre also have their own rescue animals that are looking for homes so if you are looking to add a permanent member to your family or want to help those that have helped us by fostering one of their rescues, please contact them directly about the animals they have available. Even though the QAWS animals may be in foster homes, there are still dozens of animals that need help through the surgeries and individuals.
QAWS animals that are currently in foster homes are still available for adoption and over the next few days we will be putting together a database so that potential adopters can see individual animals in their foster homes. Please contact 539 6074 if you would like to permanently adopt an animal.
www.qaws.org
We just came back from QAWS and the Vet Surgery. All the animals are relocated temporarily with the local Vets, please contact QAWS for details of where to find the animals.
The Vet Surgery is overflowing with pets now. They need food (cat and dog) and foster homes. You can buy the food from them if it makes things easier, they will make a big discount.
QAWS needs water and hay. We dropped by and took 200 liters of water which will last the donkey and bull for 2 days and will head back there with water if necessary in a couple of days.
I will be back at the Vet Surgery in 3 days time to help walking the pets and whatever needs doing.
We have just adopted (another!) cat and just brought it home. We will not sponsor it though, we will keep it.
Everybody, thank you so much for your fantastic responses. I am deeply involved in helping the Vet Surgery and appeal to all of you to contribute if possible.
Thank you from the heart :)
Well I have just got back from one of the vets and have adopted one of the dogs from Qaws. He is called Bamboo but we will be re naming him Chester. So glad we could be of help and we are really happy to welcome the new edition to our family :)
go right ahead. you need not have even asked. spread the word. qaws need all the help they can get. and thanks for doing that.
Greeker, I "borrowed" some of your photos and put them on Facebook, hope that's all right. They seem to have attracted good attention and good intentions.

Sad ..Really..sad news
Honestly I didnt expect it to be so bad :(
Hope we can rebuild it into a better place.

Sorry to hear about the fire and the loss of the cats, I hope any future construction is done in a safer manner and then the community can help build up a reserve of food for the animals. Maybe since its Fall and people are returning from holidays they can consider adapting a pet.
We're not on mains water as we're on a farm and our water tanks melted in the fire so we can't have a water tanker delivery. Therefore we have to buy bottled water for the time being until we can get another tank donated.
www.qaws.org
Chelsea, why bottled water for the bull and donkey? Tap water isn't good enough for them?

So sad to see this has happened. I have just rang one of the vets offering a foster home for a dog. They have said they have lost of dogs and cats needing a home so just go down. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
I can't even begin to describe the support we've had from everyone. The phone hasn't stopped ringing since 6.30 this morning and we've already had 8 potential foster parents meet the remaining dogs to see if we can match them to families.
There are about 18 dogs left that need foster homes and we are desperate for homes without other animals that might be able to take one of our bigger dogs. There are also 12 cats that have been rescued from the fire that also need foster homes.
The vets are closed today but food can be dropped off from tomorrow morning and anyone interested in fostering should call the QAWS phone on 5396074 and we will let you know which dogs are where.
The Veterinary Surgery are desperate for help with dog walking so if anyone is free this afternoon and can go down around 4pm to help them they would really appreciate it. There is a location map on the website www.dohavets.com
Anyone that is willing to help with the clean up or rebuild, please send an email to [email protected] and we will get in touch when the fire investigation team give us the go ahead to start clearing the site.
Again, thank you. And if the phone isn't answered - please try again in 5 minutes as I'm probably on the other line!!!
www.qaws.org
I was shocked and felt really sorry to hear about the tragedy. I remember how people put there efforts to built the new shelter.
I hope this time QLers will put even better efforts to built even better and stronger.
Peace
:) No Greeker, it wasn't me. You must have met my wonderful friend Desert Queen. She called me to tell me the news, but unfortunately my phone was on silent and I by the time I called back, the tragedy had completed it's course.
You probably have met me before, I was "Qatar Pets" together with DQ, remember when we merged with QAWS? Since my baby I have had to give up managing the website, so it went into professional hands. :)
QAWS has a special place in my heart, so it is horrible to hear that this has happened. I don't think I have the strength to see for myself the devastation. :(
The only thing we can do, is help them rebuild and help these dogs into foster care as quickly as possible.
Also how do we find out what dogs are available for fostering? Can we select from the adoption page on the QAWS website? (We have a small child so only certain dogs would be suitsble...)
We'd love to help out...
... this afternoon with as much water as we can get into 2 vehicles and bags of catfood.
My husband can only talk to the big bosses at Qatalum on Sunday as that is the time they are back from the weekend. He is sure there will be support for rebuilding the place in brick, let's just see what happens. It is bad it happened, before a weekend is worse as we have to wait for the weekend to be over to talk to the people who can really help to make a change.
tsk, tsk, tsk...am so saddened by this tragic incident, hope all of the animals could be saved...thanks for this info..
Cogito...ergo, sum.....
My husband is at the farm this morning and said the men out there are in desperate need of a generator for A/C, etc. and also a large (the size that supports a villa) water tank.
Really sad to hear what happened, but it is heartwarming to read of the many people who care so much to help out. We left Qatar three weeks ago, now in Utah, but I am thinking of you all and will follow the Qaws story here on QL

its really very sad, i still remember the other day we were fixing the kennels there and today all finished. Very very sad.
If there is any planfor thr re construction or building the new infrastructure, just share with us and you will have our full support.
I came and Scarlett told me you just left.
God bless you for your efforts.
Scarlett/Xena/Chelsea and all QAWS members: On behalf of QLVG we are sorry for the great loss of QAWS Animals and the destruction of infrastructure.
We ensure you of our full support. Just give us a 2 days notice and we (QLVG) team will be at your place for cleaning/ building new kennels/ donations etc... just name anything we will do our level best to help you guys out to build new and better QAWS.
Me and my family are very sad, we were talking about QAWS birthday function and those new kennels which were recently build with lots of struggles :-(
May God bless you all.
mention about Desert_Queen and Scarlett... Scar, you went to the end of the earth and back for us today, thank you for the support when I got there, the shock was overwhelming...
You and DQ risked yourselves for our beautiful babies, and we will be forever greatful to you...
To the Qatari gent that arrived and help with keeping the dogs in safety, we salute you and second Scar's sentiments.. your parents must be so proud to have a son like you.
To everyone that helped, thank you, without you, we would have had even more of a disaster on our hands, as we wouldn't haven't been able to do it alone...
For the phone calls, the well-wishers, the people that have pledged to help... you will never know how much your support means.
To our babies who lost their lives in the fire - you will always be in our hearts and our memories - RIP.

On a side note - Bella the donkey, Ferdie the bull and all the farm birds were unharmed as were all of the outside cats. They are still at the shelter BUT we need help with feeding and watering as we have no electricity, very limited food and no water supply.
If anyone can help by dropping a bag of cat food, bale of hay or box of water at the farm to the guys we would really appreciate it. The donkey and bull will drink 2 x 5 gallon bottles of water a day EACH - that's a minimum of 20 gallons (80 litres) per day between the 2 of them!
www.qaws.org
So sad... but this is what we have..Everything will recover, so many people wish this! i have 3 rescued dogs and i even cannot imagine what damage has been done.. You will survive, please, people, come to QAWS! We need you and what are you doing is brilliant...!
My family and I used to volunteer on QAWS. Our daughters have developed special admiration and sensibility feelings about the indefension, tenderness and resignation of these animals. We're deeply sad for what happened. Thanks to QAWS people who constructed the place and dedicate time to take care of the animals. Like Fenix bird QAWS will come back alive from the ashes! We will contact surely the Vets looking to be useful, of course for the material needs, but specially with love and time for the animals. A solidarity hug for all friends of QAWS.
Its really Sad !!!
for what happened and my inability to help. Be strong guys and girls you're doing a great job and you have full moral support from me, and I'm sure, thousands of others. When I get a damn dime in my pocket you lot are definitely getting a piece :)
Fubar, you are a hero also! I hope you enjoy your house guest. What's his/her name?
Mandi
Was it you who i saw and talked to? Or was it Desert Queen? I'm confused now. I only caught your real name. I was thinking it might be Desert Queen, but now i think it might have been you. Could you clarify?
Hear Hear Greeker.
I am at a loss to what to say at a time like this. Lets keep spreading the word so it can get back onto it feet.
I have a poor QAWS stray sleeping on my sofa. I wish there was more I could do to help. Seeing all the volunteers at QAWS this afternoon was a truly amazing sight. I hope QAWS can regroup and rise from the ashes.
What's happened to the ducks and geese??
Thank you, Greeker, and thanks to our heroes, Desert Queen and Scarlett and Chelsea and Xena. And to the firefighters and the many, many volunteers. And to all those who have taken the dogs into their homes and hearts.
Mandi
I am very happy to see that Qatarliving people went out for the rescue. If I could, I would have, but I made sure people knew about it.
How can you prevent this from happening in the future? Can you get authority to approve the activities in order to accept donations legally? I sure there is more that can be done.
~*Speak when you are angry and you will make the best speech you will ever regret*~
It took me about two hours to get to the place and I blame myself for not having been able to reach there sooner. I’d been called a million times to visit the place but something or the other always cropped up. Had I utilised at least one of those chances, I wouldn’t have reached there late. By the time I reached, I was already later than the time I had set myself to leave.
All I could do in the short time was walk around stupefied at the amount of destruction and click a few pictures. I sincerely wanted to do more. But I was stupid enough to rush out of office as soon as I heard the news and DID NOT think at the time to go to qaws website and download a route map. Well, these things happen I guess.
I reached the place to see Desert Queen, Xena and Chelsea hold fort wonderfully. They were tying the puppies at safe places, instructing the HUNDRED PLUS people who had already gathered there in their cars, thanking the firemen for a prompt response, writing down the names of dogs who were already settled into new places, planning aloud their next move and generally being ROCKS OF GIBRALTER. I salute all of you for your courage in the face of fire.
And then there was the little case of Scarlett and Desert Queen who dropped what they were doing and rushed to the site of the fire. AND hurled themselves into the burning shed AND untied the dogs and threw them out AND kept continuing with little concern for their safety AND staying there until they were sure there were no more dogs left in the house. WOW. That deserves a golden badge of honour.
And then there was Chelsea, sitting down on a dilapidated crate turned sideways, a paper on a makeshift table, scribbling down the names of dogs who had already found foster homes. I’m not sure how old she is, but she looked young. Her face radiated calmness and purpose. I really wish you guys build a new QAWS. Expect me to help in whatever little way I can. I promise I’ll take a bigger interest in QAWS from now on.
And then there was the slightly bigger case of the people who assembled there. I’m seriously wonderstruck. For the first time since coming to Doha, I saw humanity in hundreds of eyes. The people who transported dogs back to their place and the veterinary places, your hearts are made of pure gold.
And then there was the case of the little big website called Qatar Living. I heard about the fire first on QL, thanks to Gypsy’s post, on the front page. A few minutes later, I was outta office. Qatari deserves full praise for promoting the thread to front page so that it remained at the top.
Overall, I think it was a brilliant effort done well. I loved the camaraderie exhibited by people there. Although this is a tragedy, I’m sure this will strengthen QAWS further.
With full respect to the deceased animals, I say QAWS survived the ‘test by fire’, thanks to the work of a unified set of people, for whom the words compassion and love for animals still mean something…

I've sent an sms regarding one of the older dogs that was up for adoption - hope I can help in this regard.
Should we come to the farm or is there someplace else we can drop off supplies?

I wishing the best for you guys. I'm sure when I get back at the end of the month the worst will be behind you, but please let me know what I can do for you. This whole thing is breaking my heart. I can't help but think my little tikkas brothers and sisters were victims. :(
need your help!!! That is something we owe them as the only home they know is gone.....
Please if you can go down to the Veterinary clinics and help us/them but especially the dogs ....to take them out for a walk as they don`t have enough staff to walk all these dogs....
And if you can spare a bag of dog or catfood.....please take that with you as all they had is gone....
Thanks guys.....

Chloe's absolutely fine! She's actually the only dog we couldn't find space for at the vet clinics so she's staying at my house tonight. She's tired from all the excitement of today but she's just had her dinner and settled down to snooze on the sofa (hope she's allowed on them!).
Let me know when you're back on Saturday (539 6074) and we'll drop her round to you.

cyQatar, one of the threads said that all the dogs who were being boarded at QAWS are jsut fine.

didn't mean to butt in on here//hope you have made it home by now.. I just got home, and showered up...friend told me to check out the threads...
You guys do such a wonderful service for all the animals in Qatar...I'm sure QAWS will be up and running in no time!!
You know...I'm positive there were a ton of QL folks there today, helping...but I don't know you all...yet!!! I just happened to know Greeker and Speed...and the look on their faces said it all....

Tragedy does bring out great things in people and insha'Allah this will lead to QAWS growing stronger and better. God bless you folks.
I didn't drink the kool-aid! -- PM
Chelsea, will do!
Mandi
Sorry - I'm not thinking straight!! Best thing is maybe to call them and find out which they would prefer - cash or food.
www.qaws.org
Right, I meant can we go to the vet clinics and pay them directly? For food and boarding, etc.
Mandi
I can't even begin to mention you all by name - you know who you are and you know just how much you all mean to us.
An extra thank you to Scarlett and Desert Queen who dropped everything in a second and were the first on the scene to help with the evacuation.
www.qaws.org
To be honest with you I don't know what we need! We're all exhausted but now all the surviving animals are safe we can start to look at what we need to do.
Priority is the animals and finding foster homes. The vets have taken over 100 animals from us at the drop of a hat so if anyone can donate any food or litter to the clinics to help them out we would be grateful as we have lost everything and have not been able to send even a bag of food with the animals.
We can't accept monetary donations as we are not a registered charity and for the time being we don't have anywhere to put physical donations. As soon as we have a plan of action - you will all be the first to know!!!
If anyone can help the clinics with feeding all the rescue animals please call The Veterinary Surgery 436 7187 or Qatar Veterinary Centre 421 6405.
www.qaws.org
LOCAL guy who arrived shortly after Desert Queen and I did...he helped immensely with getting the animals out and keeping them from running back inside the fenced area.
Sir...who ever you are...bless you!!! Your family did a wonderful job of raising you to have such a good heart!!
A good friend helps you up when you fall. A best friends pees their pants laughing and trips you again!
however, seeing everyone pull together was phenomenal.
Chelsea, Poppy and Xena....wish I could have done more to help...
Greeker, thank you for the incredible post and pictures...
Speed...as always...wonderful to see you there.
To the Qatar Fire Department....To have you arrive so quickly after being called was wonderful!!
IF all the QLers could pull together once more for this cause it would be so fantastic...QAWS lost EVERYTHING...except for their love of the welfare of the animals...

Chelsea, let us know if you have a greater need for cash or for donated itmes.

feel sorry for Qaws members and their hard work.
be strong Chelsea, lots of people will help you'll see...
Excellent information as always. Thanks.
Well done the Qatar Fire Service.. I am sure with everybody's help, the place will be up and running again soon..
ALL ANIMALS BEING BOARDED AT PAWS AND CLAWS BOARDING KENNELS WERE EVACUATED SAFELY AND ARE CURRENTLY IN BOARDING AT VETERINARY CLINICS IN DOHA. PLEASE CONTACT 539 6074 TO FIND OUT WHICH CLINIC YOUR PET IS CURRENTLY HOUSED AT
We would like to extend a huge thank you to the hundreds of people who rallied together to help us in our hour of need. We are eternally grateful to you all for your support and with the numerous foster carers, searchers and pet taxis, a huge number of lives were saved. A big thank you to the emergency services who were so quick to assist.
We currently have around 15 dogs which have been taken into foster homes with the rest being taken to Qatar Veterinary Centre, The Veterinary Surgery and Pampered Pets. We are so grateful to all the staff at the clinics and kennels who were able to find space at such short notice and helped with the rescue mission. Starting tomorrow we will be looking for foster homes for the remaining dogs as the clinics can not keep them indefinitely.
Our cats were not so lucky and unfortunately we still don't know how many escaped. We have found at least 15 cats and more have returned to the shelter looking for their dinner so fingers crossed our original estimates were wrong and we will continue to find them over the next few days. They have also been taken to the vet clinics.
As you can see from the photos - we have lost everything. If anyone can help us out and donate pet food for the animals staying at the clinics we would be very grateful.
This will not stop us and we will rebuild, bigger, better and stronger (and also in concrete). We don't know how or when, but we will be looking at rebuilding the shelter as soon as is physically possible and we will need all the help we can get. We will need donations of food, towels, bowls, crates, toys, leads, beds, litter trays - we literally have nothing left.
Anyone who thinks they may be able to help with foster care - please be advised that we don't know when we are going to be in a position to take them back into our care. We will continue to advertise animals on the website and try to rehome them from their temporary homes.
Again, words can not express how grateful we are to all of you for your support.

It breaks my heart with the thoughts of those poor cats.
And to think they just got a new building set up just recently?
This is catastrophic, indeed. :-(
looking at those photos is just saddening... :(
60 cats :(. If I wasn't off to New York at 8 am tomorrow I'd bring them some food, but as it is I'm gone for 3 weeks. I'll keep checking for updates though and if they can set up an account for people to transfer money into I will straight away.
This is tragic. !
