Abu Dhabi, Doha link to cost $13bn

A proposed causeway linking the UAE capital, Abu Dhabi, with Doha in Qatar may cost about $13 billion, London-based Middle East Economic Digest (Meed) magazine reported, citing a consultant that could be involved in the project.

Mohammed Ali, regional adviser with Denmark's Cowi, said the the latest design envisages linking the two cities via a 65-kilometre bridge across the Gulf, Meed said.

Cowi is likely to be involved in the project as a consultant. It is already involved in a project to build a causeway between Qatar and Bahrain, Meed said.

The original design for the UAE-Qatar causeway, which was first developed six years ago, was for a 40-kilometre link. This was changed due to difficulties with the route, which ran through Saudi Arabian territorial waters, Meed said.

No date has been set for construction to start, the magazine reported on its website. (Reuters)

well that will help Qatar to be independent form KSA but as far as i can see the construction work run in this country, i can say that such a project will need more 20 years to be existed !! you can look to the street projects and after that u can judge how long it will take to finish such huge work ...

Yes Ferry would be a brilliant Idea.

The causeway is what is needed to bridge Qatar and UAE. Saudi's have taken a very negative view on all of this and Commuters have to travel through KSA which is a nightmare.

If this bridge is ever built in the future it will mean that one can travel to Abu Dhabi from Doha in just under 2 hours considering all the Immigration and Broder Control checking.

Causeway can come in the future. But why don't they have a regular ferry service to Abu Dhabi/Dubai/Bahrain/Kuwait at present. This ferry may carry both cars and passengers. Thus hassles with the Saudi customs can be avoided. Any rich guy here in Qatar Living who can think about this?

You'd need 3 hours tops from the F1 season opener venue to the season closer :D

YAS, BUILD IT NAO. Avoiding Saudi would be absolutely fantastic. No more lameola transit visas and permits. BTW. if you didn't know, Emiratis can no longer go to Saudi with an ID card, now they need a passport :P GCC politics are largely beyond me...

I'd be in AD on a daily basis if that causeway were around. I'd only come here to work and sleep :P

if this happens trade and business in Qatar will benefit. We will have a hassle free link to UAE to transport goods without having to pass through KSA.
