Aminos2008...if its a week and you want a taste of all of it...ie City, Caves, Forts, Historic-Cultural and Heritage centres, Beach, Mountains, Forests & Hills, Trekking etc...

The best option would be Maharashtra...

http://www.maharashtratourism.gov.in/index/index.aspx

After that you can go to Goa via Konkan Railway...just 10 hrs away. Goa is mainly beaches. There are a couple of topless beaches as well ;)

http://www.goa-tourism.com/

You could push the Maharashtra trip a little down south to make it Maharashtra-Goa-Kerala. Now you could also try to include Karnataka's Vijaynagar & Hampi ruins:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hampi

If you go Delhi you have to do Jaipur-Delhi-Agra-Rishikesh

But this just the tip of the Ice berg

go to Trivandrum to admire florishing nature ..

Goa I would not recommend, a bit durty and crowded ..

swimming is not possible, so, do walking ..

try to stay at some hotels previously converted from the private houses of the time of british colonisation, furniture is amazing there, meuble de cuire, you know, like in a very old London ..

but take an indian friend with you, to search for a small cozy places!

Thanks all, it looks like one year will not be even enough to visit a small part of Great India,

However, I'm planing to visit Goa and New Delhi

What do you think?

India is huge..every place is different..

Up north Himachal is the best according to me(plus the best hash in the world..manali cream)..for those who really love it..

down south..kerala is beautiful..backwaters and high ranges(good quality weed here too)..if you like tropical climate..

Goa is also great fun..nice beaches and genuine tourist place( in terms of locals not pestering/gawking at you)..party time in dec/jan

Rajasthan also beautiful if u want to see old forts, bit of history n desert life..

North east..darjeeling and the tea plantations alsoawesome awesome

want to rough it out..take a train trip north to south or east to west..

thing is if you really want to see India,u need at least 3 months to have a good idea of the country and its diversity..lots of western backpackers do that..

if you have only a week,go to himachal/goa/kerala if you want natural beauty n relaxed surroundings..(i guess u want 2 relax ,right?)..but make sure u chk hotels n bookings, end of the year is the main tourist season..

By beast up• 27 Aug 2009 22:38
beast up

himachal pradesh..manali..also u get the best (parvati) cream there..the best place if you put the natural beauty n the hash together..

You will have to choose the 'what' first before you choose a 'which'. For ex. Decide first:

1. Beaches

2. Mountains

3. Desert ( I'am sure thats not the one )

4. Hill Stations

5. Cities

6. Towns

7. Forests

8. Cultural and Heritage centres

9. Rivers and Plains

10.Easturies and Backwaters

etc. Once you make up your mind. about these;choosing the place is really not difficult. Let us know.

unlike any other state in India, Kerala offers beaches, backwaters and beasts (i mean the jungle!). you can start with the sea and get to the backwaters to the highlands..

Go to Himachal Pardesh, Kullu Manali Mcleodganj Dalhousie etc. etc, not to forget Shimla. Will be nice change from this heat, greenery and mountains all around. nice clean air, rivers flowing through the hills. Not very expensive either, people from all sorts of countries present. I think I am getting homesick.
