Radio show axed over rape furore !

By britexpat

What is this world coming to ? Are we all becoming voyeurs and losing sensitivity to the feelings of others ??????????????????????????????????????????

An Australian radio show has been pulled off air after a lie detector stunt saw a 14-year-old girl say she had been raped.

The move follows public outrage over the segment, which saw the girl quizzed about whether she was sexually active.

The radio show saw the girl strapped to a polygraph machine as her mother - who had volunteered to be on air - quizzed her despite apparently knowing she had been assaulted when she was 12 years old.

Sandilands was accused of further insensitivity when after the confession he asked: "Right, and is that the only sexual experience you've had?"

Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd led the criticism against the radio show, saying: "This is a young girl and I am, as I think most Australians are, really distressed at the way in which the young person has been treated in this way."

Child welfare officers and police have now been ordered to investigate the teenager's claims.

The Kyle and Jackie O Show is the highest-rating breakfast radio programme in Sydney.

A statement from 2Day FM said Sandilands was "unable to perform his on-air duties at this time", while the station is also reviewing its audience interaction policy.

The girl in question spoke to the police, but advised them that she does not want to pursue any legal action against the perpatrator.

Rav5 I know you are just having a a "good" natured debate to which such post is to be or not to be posted.. In a thread which is "ill" in nature. well, you could have posted an arena attacking these threads, not here.

give britexpat the benifit of the doubt. This is for educational purposes nothing more nothing less.

That's the only Duke Leto I know about too...

I prefer this quote (it's also appropriate to the topic) "I must not fear.

Fear is the mind-killer.

Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.

I will face my fear.

I will permit it to pass over me and through me.

And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.

Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.

Only I will remain."

If you listen to the clip, the girl was offered, on-air, by the presenter, free counselling.

The shocking thing is that despite the rape occuring 2 years prior, and the mother knowing about it for months, no counsellnig was sought.

It might also interest you to learn that the hosts of the show have both been stood down, advertisers have boycotted the show, and the male host, Sandilands, has been fired from his other job as a judge on Australian Idol.

So I think we can argue that on the whole, society DOES NOT approve of this sort of radio stunt.

Bella, there are losts of psychiatrists hoping to assist people like yourself. Do the needful.

The mother shouldn't have let her child answer that line of questioning.

Im glad the show has been axed. What a bunch of idiots!

I agree, I don't think the humiliation of a young girl should be described for our entertainment, and I don't think the posting on Qatar Living served any useful purpose.

However, Britexpat has explained that he posts these stories for educational/moral purposes and not for the prurient enjoyment of those who read them, and who am I to say if that is true or not.

So I was only responding to Darly's refreshingly self-aware and honest comment that he enjoys reading them. Apologies if this caused any confusion.

Darly, Don't worry this is only a little discussion. You are right, QL does get boring with the same old topics.

But haven't you realized through this thread that Britexpat doesn't post sex-related stories for your amusement or enjoyment? No! They are only there to educate you about the perils of ...erm...sensational sex-related stories destroying our society (ie the UK and its dominion, Australia).

So, from today, kindly stop enjoying them and use them instead as a basis for your own moral crusade against the forces of erm...insensitivity, sensationalism, reality tv, reality radio, bad mothering, Jade Goody (RIP), Jerry Springer, the Sun newspaper, voyeurism, etc etc.

Thanks to our friend Britexpat, the world will become a better place!

No need to apologize. We all have differing opinions. That's what makes it such a great place.

I do believe that there is a creeping menace of reality shows. Anything that takes Jade Goody and makes her a household name and role model for our young gets me worried.

As far as stories are concerned, you will see that i do post on a range of topics.

The story itself is a non-story, although the title you chose for the posting ie 'Radio show axed over rape furore!' was, itself, sensationalist.

What I was interested in, and wanted to discuss, was the reason for sex related articles, appearing on a website devoted to living in Qatar.

Now I realize that you were really trying to alert international QL community to the creeping menace of reality radio programs, which are threatening to spread all over the world. You are trying to prevent innocent QLers from being lured into a world of underage public lie-detection. In fact, you are trying to prevent nothing less than the moral decay and downfall of civilization via a website devoted to living and working in Qatar!

I can only apologize for my mistaken view and I look forward to your postings of more salacious sex-related stories from around the world.

Welcome back.. I hope you'll continue using your own id ..

QL is for all and anything. you're perfectly entitled to disagree.

Theer are many causes to fight. This one highlights the dangers of reality shows both on radio and TV. people are willing to sacrrifice their self respect and even endanger their loved ones just to appear in public and get their 15 minutes of fame..

This happened in Australia today. Tomorrow a similar situation may occur in Pakistan or India or even Qatar. The fact is that sensationalism sells and producers are copying each other to get air time.

You may think of it as a non story, but I certainly don't.

we are all entitled to our opinions. If you believe its a non story, then ignore it and don't comment..

Now back to my usual self, no split personality. I was using a friend's ID (with permission) as I was being bounced when I tried to log in. Apologies to Tefla for any embarrassment, and sorry for the confusion, as all opinions expressed are mine and mine alone.

I did ask before, what do you expect people to do as a result of your posting? What do you expect to change? There are many causes to fight for in this world, I dont know what cause you're fighting for with this one.

Again, what does a radio presenter in Sydney, who's already been sanctioned, have to do with 'our country' (apart from the fact that our own dear Queen, God bless her, may be upset when she reads your posting)? I know we used to have an empire, but I think some Australians may take offense at their nation being considered part of the United Kingdom. And then being held responsible for our decline as a civilization. People from one nation rarely appreciate someone from another nation pointing out their failings....

So, how do you draw the conclusion that we will all become a nation of voyeurs? It was you who drew more people's attention to this non-story. And your posting has resulted in a link to a recording of the show being posted, so more people will view it.

Prostitutes at the Ramada: they are certainly abused, they are on our doorstep, and we turn a blind eye to their situation, and many of us go about pretending they don't occur. Why are they the subject of jokes and the girl in Sydney the subject of moral outrage? Why do you invite us to be horrified at one and laugh at the other?

Again, sorry for raising these points, but I still feel that a site called Qatar Living is intended to be about Living in Qatar, so of course you are free to post whatever you like but I am free to ask you: why?

By britexpat• 4 Aug 2009 12:53

How did Rav05 become Tefla ??????????????? A secret double ID perhaps :o)

Anyway, Rav05 / Tefla to me it has nothing to do with hypocracy. QL is a global site, catering for a global audience and open to discussions on all levels.

I joke about my trips to Ramada, but if you see my postings / responses, I also stick up for those who are abused.

As far as salacious sex-related stories, I am moraly outraged, thats why i post them. Would you rather we turned a blind eye and went about our business poretending they don't occur.

Britexpat, I'm not saying its a matter of east vs. west, at all.

My point is that as soon as it happened strong action was taken (as per Miss X), so no evidence in decline of standards of decency.

From your username, you are British and this happened in Australia, so 'we are becoming a nation of voyeurs' makes no sense as a statement coming from you.

Jerry Springer and the like have been on air for many many years now: there is not even any novelty value any more to create interest. We've all watched, then gone about our daily lives, we've not all turned into mindless, voyeuristic morons.

My main point was to ask you, as you are a regular poster of salacious sex-related stores, often involving the abuse of young girls, why you justify yourself by pretending to be morally outraged by what you choose to share with the users of QL?

For example, you also seem to enjoy posting joking comments about prostitutes in Doha, but you're not outraged by the miserable lives of these abused and dehumanized victims, forced to trade their bodies and risk their health for money, or by the behavior of the men who abuse them, or by their pimps....... Better to get in a state about one radio program in Sydney...

Sorry to get so heavy and please don't take offense at my comments. But I'm really bored by the use of QL for the posting of sex-related material totally unrelated to 'Living in Qatar'. And I'm fed up with hypocrites who pretend they are posting and commenting out of a sense of public duty. That's my point of view and I welcome feedback

By britexpat• 4 Aug 2009 08:33

This has nothing to do with East and west. My point is that by allowing these types of cases to occur, we are beginning to become a nation of voyeurs who spend time watching and listening to reality programs.

This is also creating a class of people who would jump at the chance to appear on Jerry Springer and similar to show how disfunctional they really are..

I heard that particular segment. The mother had volunteered the daughter to be hooked up to a lie detector, and the teenage daughter agreed. The mother was the one asking all the questions and was aware that her daughter had been raped 2 years ago. After the rape was revealed on air, there was a pause, and Kyle Sandilands filled the shocked silence with a thoughtless question as to whether that was her only experience. The other presenter then immediately stepped in and aborted the segment and offered the girl counselling for free. The issue particularly with Sandilands is that he often pushes boundaries, and can be quite rude and blunt. So this added to a long line of controversy for him, however I don't believe what he did in this show was anything to warrant his firing.

While this particular segment was pushing the limits a bit in itself, by asking a 14 year old questions that would potentially result in her admitting criminal behaviour, it was the mother who knew the girls history, and it was the mother who chose which questions to ask her.

This is a recording of the show.

One moronic presenter on one local radio station crosses a line of decency and is immediately taken off air. The Prime Minister says he thinks most people are offended by the incident, and he's probably right. The authorities are investigating. So how do you come to the conclusion that we are all sinking into an amoral abyss and you are performing some kind of service by drawing our attention to it? What is your point? What action do you want us take as human beings? Shall we not listen to local radio (just in case)? Shall we stop posting sex-related stories on Qatar Living? Especially those relating to the humiliation of under-age girls?

Britexpat, cut the 'shocked and horrified' routine. You specialize in posting this sort of news (rape, incest anything to do with sex will do), absolutely no relevance to life in Qatar. Then, lots of others join in and the 'what's the world coming to?'/ 'its the west'/ 'she's guilty/he's guilty' discussion starts. If you're so concerned with us all becoming voyeurs, or not showing sensitivity to the feelings of the victims whose ordeals you describe, why not take the first step yourself and stop posting this kind of story?
