and they have to leave Qatar in 1 week, and they owe more on their credit cards than they can possibly pay, does anyone actually knows what happens in these circumstances?

In Qatar there is a strict liability for debt, you are responsible for any debt you assume and many people have been detained here, without a chance to earn money to satisfy such debts. How this helps anyone I don't know but I suppose the theory is if someone is detained here eventually someone will be spurred to pay their debts and allow them to depart. There have been many stories in local newspapers of benevolent people helping those in this bind. The obvious thing is to avoid borrowing while u are here, how often do I see ads from "expat leaving" trying to sell almost a brand new car at a considerable loss to try to satisfy their creditors. The whole sponsorship system is set up to try to avoid such problems for the sponsor, hence sponsor's permission needed to buy a car, rent a property etc. Avoid this trap! Buy a cheap car, or rent one, do not borrow more than you can pay back if the worse comes to the worse, as it sometimes does!

no,,not me, but I get asked this at times,,,,which is obviously why people do the "Dubai Shuffle" sometimes. But I have never received a true answer, just a lot of speculation....

It's been the general understanding that they will be detained at the airport and not allowed to leave until the debts have been satisfactorily settled (I hope this isn't you?)
