Senior Business Analyst - Reporting to CEO

NadineS
By NadineS

Hello,

I am a Canadian Arab with 15 years of Oil & Gas experience with 3 international accounting designation. Previously, I was Finance Manager and Budget Manager for a $27 billion project in the oil & sand in Calgary...

What kind of salary compensation package can I obtain in Qatar, reporting directly to the GM/CEO for one of QP subsidiaries, as a Business Analyst?

Any suggestions?

Sincerely.

Actually Qatar and Canada don't have a tax treaty! That's weird! What are they waiting for? Canada is always late compare to the US, Europe & Australia. I think they love so much our money. lol

I'll have to find a way around.

Hi Nadine,

What matters for CRA is your physical residence along with the time spent in there. If you live in Doha for more than 6 months (180 days I think), you will not be taxed in Canada but in Qatar... so no taxes for you!

I have some friends in that situation. They live in the UAE, Europe all year long, they don't pays taxes in Canada. I'm in Ottawa and I have many friends working for CRA (some in the tax evasion department).

I'm pretty sure the same rule applies for European countries. Most countries have agreements to that effect.

You can keep your house, it's not an issue.

If you have other questions, don't hesitate.

See my situation:

I was budget/Finance Manager for large oil company (which will welcome me back anytime) in Canada, making 140K+pension+stock option+health & Life Insurrance+Bonus 20% and ofcourse, properties and food are somewhat cheaper than in Qatar... It seems like I will need at least 65k Qatari per month to get that incentive to go...

Anyway, when I met the CEO, and told me an offer will be coming shortly, I cannot wait to see what's in it...

I have a bad feeling, it will be an offer that I will refuse, again.

As Canadian, owning a house, considered a resident, all foreign income is taxable. Therefore, the taxes is irrelevant. I pay either way, until I sell the house, and the government gives me non-resident status, and we are talking years before it happens. Selling a house is not than simple, can take a long time too. Now that it is rented, there is a year left in the lease. I am not eligible for tax free salary, for at least years too come.

Sincerely

A expatriate manager basic salary between 25 to 35k apart from other allowances. if the gross 60k to 70k will be good enough

Very true - you've given a nicely documented example of why Western expat salaries are so high here in Qatar. The higher salaries make up for the benefits lost by coming to the Gulf. Because the higher-paid Western expat tends to have had many years professional experience they also leave behind a large pension, expensive insurance, and an often well-established home. The salary must make up for the intangibles as well as the cash value in order to attract them. Nadine, I'm interested to see what they offer you in terms of housing. Companies are usually very utilitarian - single women get small apartments. But go for the gold, girl!

Thanks Dude!

Not so sure about better salary when you factor in the CPI, the cost and quality of living.

According to my calculation on some position in comparison to Calgary, I have been offered jobs that were paying less here in the region.

It feels like it is a "Mirage"

When taking into consideration employer contribution of your pension, stock option, education allowances, professional fees which are paid by employers in Canada, these benefits are somewhat nonexistent in Qatar.

As for Tax Free Salary... because I have a house, I do not have a "taxes-free salary" thus becoming irrelevant since I still pay taxes.

Thus, negotiating salary here has to be argued and negotiated on such factual grounds, right?

So to say 99.9% of salaries are better in Qatar might be true if you are from the third world countries, but not so true and debatable for some position in North America... I cannot speak for Europe, I do not have enough information.

Sincerely,

For britexpat asked you for your JD to give you an indication of your salary. This is ridiculous coz what he should have asked you is whether your employer has mentioned the GRADE into which the offered position would fall. Salary and remuneration is based on the the grade and not on the Job Description. Secondly, when he suggested you not to join the 'Stirring Commitee' he was mocking at you coz you mispelt 'Steering Committee'. Please send me a PM with your grade and I will tell you what exactly to expect along with your HRA,Child Education Asst.,Leaves,Travel etc.

Life is Beautiful...Indeed!

What do you mean by not joining the Stirring Committee? Fill me in, I am curious to know. The position is called Senior Business & Planning Analyst to the Executive. How much do you think is a reasonable Basic Salary out there?

Nadine,

One fact in Qatar, 99.9% of the jobs are paid better and higher otherwise no-one would come over here.

In Canada very well off = rich here.

I suggest that you do not become a member of the "Stirring committee", since it may cause issues.

As far as the JD is concerned, the position seems more geared to a Financial analyst than a Business Analyst.

I hope you succeed in getting a position and package you require.

Here is the JD>

1. Member of the Stirring Committee of the Company

2. Prepare Board of Directors reports and CEO

3. Provide regular analysis and recommendation of 2 subsidiary operation to the CEO, and implementation

4. Analyze potential investment target and due diligence

5. Analyze Macroeconomic factors/impact on operation and advise the Board

6. Prepare business models to ensure sufficient cash flow for the operation and for debt pmt

7. Dealing with banks, investors and government agencies

8. Negotiating raw material supplies

This is very brief, but I hope this info helps.

P.s. I have a high standard of living in Canada, is it fair to state that I want to maintain such living, and they provide full accommodation to such levels in Qatar?

Thank you everyone.

BTW, this is a really a hard decision and transition...

Not in this case... Senior Business Analyst is a general title, its the job description that is most critical. In most cases, being a business analyst to the executive is a promotion. Moreover, with the Qatarization program, it is hard to find Financial Controller position... Finance Managers usually reports to Financial Controller or maybe CFO. An offer of Business Analyst to the CEO, you are like the right hand guy to the CEO/CFO and Board of Directors for the financial and strategic development of the company... Hopes this helps... It is all about the job description!
