Brussels Welcomes Hijabs in Parliament

Straight Arrow
By Straight Arrow

Yesterday, on April 20th 2006, the Belgians carried a young scout to his grave after he was murdered by North African youths for not obeying them immediately when they told him to hand over his MP3 player. Desperately trying to prove that their boy was not a “racist” who must have “provoked” the murderers, the boy’s family gave pride of place to Muslim friends and symbols at the funeral service. Their immigrant neighbours were given permission to distribute homebaked bread in the church.

In the afternoon of the same day the Belgian parliament changed a longstanding rule concerning the wearing of headgear (hijabs) by visitors and members in the House. Since the establishment of the Belgian Parliament it has been the rule that members of the public who follow parliamentary proceedings from the visitors’ seats remove their hats and caps as a sign of respect for the House and the democratic principles it embodies. The rule has never been questioned, not in the early 20th century when working people habitually wore caps and politely removed them in church and when visiting Parliament; not in the 1950s and ’60s when women generally wore hats as a sign of deference in church, but removed them as a sign of deference when attending proceedings in Parliament; not throughout all the decades when priests and nuns were familiar figures in Belgium’s streets and the nuns wore veils and habits.

Brussels: First woman with headscarf in parliament

See also Turkish woman wins Belgium vote as first headscaved MP.

Mahinur Özdemir (CdH) is the first woman with a headscarf in a Belgian parliament.

She is a woman, a Muslim, 26 year old, of Turkish origin, and two days ago she was elected to the Brussels parliament. A chatterbox too when it comes to social problems and city development, the projects with which she was busy in the Schaarbeek municipality.

But however much she tried to avoid the issue, everybody begins these days with the 'first woman with a headscarf in a Belgian parliament'. So she appears, meanwhile, on dozens of (news-)sites worldwide. From Belgium to Turkey, but also from the UK to Australia.

The quibbling about her headscarf is most likely the fault of several people from her own party, CdH. when she got the party brochure in March, Mahinur Özdemir was shocked: her photo with a headscarf was the only one enlarged, in order to cut away her headscarf. What remained was colored orange like the background. Gone was the headscarf.

Abu: lol, What is it said about replacing Allah as the true Judge? To be honest, i don't think all scholars would say it, but you are free to have your own opinion and i respect it.

Sorry but don't think someone using burka should be allowed on a parliament, i accept covering the hair but not dressing as a "ninja"

and I choose it over US and Israeli culture. No issue of "hate" here.

It is nice to see that Brussels welcomes hijab in Parliament.

I don't see why anyone should have a problem with hijab or niqab or burka in a liberal society where people are to be free to where whatever they choose.

Anyway, Muslim culture is so much more than hijab, niqab, or burka.

Has anyone read "Conference of the Birds" - a great classic Persian Islamic spiritual poem!

Or are we still getting through reading our 12th cheap pamphlet about "Hijab and Women's Rights in Islam"?

Why, when we speak about Islam people become irritated.

Is there secrecy behind?

Suhail: As a portuguese muslim, i can tell you that yes, women in Portugal are safer and use revealing clothes, i think it was already discussed in this forum how revealing clothes have nothing to do with being safe or not, even some muslim brothers/sisters confirmed that in some countries in the ME, where girls are covered, there's an high percentage of attacks on those covered girls, please, don't talk about something you know nothing about.

Suhail no one criticised anyone here. Lusitano expressed his opinion on the topic that's it. No one mentioned about islam or anything but you started writing stupid comments.

Thats why I said your behaviour shows who you are ?? Neither you can read nor can you understand or express yourself. You are only good at challenging people to come out in the open and fight.... What a peaceful way to attract others to your failth.

Good luck
