The placing of China and India as the home of firms most prepared to pay bribes may partly be the result of the two countries' rapid industrialization and their push for resources, analysts said.
/
Russia, too, was near the bottom of the table.
/
On the other hand, Switzerland was ranked as the home of the firms least likely to use off-the-books payments to officials to get business done, with Sweden and Australia close behind.
/
The UK was sixth in the list of 30, with the US joint ninth with Belgium.

France, however, was at number 15 and Italy at number 20 - with respondents in Africa singling them out as much more prone to bribes than other Western states.

I make it a habit to treat with caution any survey where the original question(s) asked is not provided along with the results.

Perhaps I should go to the TI website and see what I can find.

But why when they are now 'movers and shakers' and are first world and not thirld word?

I would think those days of bribery are over.

They say they are better than the West and perhaps they are.

Perhaps they are the biggest "bribers" because of their bureaucracy. The governemnt machinery is very complex and requires bribes to move the paperwork along at a fast rate..

why India and China are the biggest bribers; as they boast of economic success, wealth and expertise. So no need to bribe really if you are all of that.

I suspect they are though.

Like PM I did expect Nigeria to be on the list but for different reasons. I suspect they take bribes but can't offer bribes back.

Most countries bribe though, it's the nature of 'business'.

so you have an unfair advantage is not seen as a bribe or negative thing? Just standard corruption?

The difference between India and China would be that China is coming out of a Communist economic system. That is why I was surprised. I would expect more government oversight.

PM, why does China surprise you? Same as in India - huge economic gap between the haves and the have-nots.

"alfa Q said Bribes ...

Bribe is a western phenomenon imposed on eastern countries."

- S/he's not totally wrong. Another take on this is that what is defined as a "bribe" in our understanding (mostly Western education) is not the same from an Eastern perspective.

India is probably the result of the huge economic gap from the vestiges of the caste system, but China surprises me. It almost makes one think that "free market economies" corrupt.

Love how you put this on the West alfa Q. Keep avoiding responsibility and you can insure you will always be behind.

Bribe is a western phenomenon imposed on eastern countries. West is now feeling the kick and the kick-back.

Hai guys,

In other countries to violate the work only Bribe will be asked. But In India to do their duty also Bribe will be expected.

And in every Govt.offices brokers are available to get bribe from people to officers to do their normal duty also.

In India Every body wants to be rich with out doing work. It's all come because of corrupted Politicians.

The ranking is 'countries prepared' to pay bribes, which is an altogether different thing from saying countries where people do.

Like Brit, I would have thought that Nigeria would have been on the list, but perhaps that's because India, China etc are countries where people pay bribes without hesitation, whereas Nigeria is a country where people pay bribes, but only after some hesitation.

I.e. in India 70% of people are prepared to pay bribes, but in Nigeria 30% of people are prepared to pay bribes immediately when asked, even though 90% of people eventually do pay them.

Just thought.

All the bribe money goes into Swiss Banks.....lol

Bofors AB of Sweden was involved in a major kickback scandal on the sale of 155 mm field howitzer Guns with India's ruling family.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bofors_scandal

Bofors Guns were later instrumental in the Kargil battle as they could fire almost to 45 degrees in height on the steep Jammu and Kashmir, mountain ranges.

But...

"This, TI said, suggested a double standard - with a number of Western companies cleaning up their act close to home while continuing to pay bribes outside the industrialised world."
